Confirm the exact game’s requirements and updates, then try reversible, targeted steps—such as Steam’s file verification for a Steam install—before changing Windows startup or display-driver settings. There is no universal fix; the cause depends on the game and PC.
Before changing settings, capture what is happening
Write down the game and edition, storefront or launcher, Windows version, CPU, GPU and RAM. Note whether the game crashes at launch or during play, copy any error text, and describe where the stutter occurs. A repeatable scene or sequence is especially useful. Steam notes that launch failures can have different causes across system configurations (Steam Support).
This record helps you compare the PC against the requirements for that specific remaster and gives the publisher something concrete to investigate if the problem persists.
Check the game’s updates and PC requirements
Check the game publisher’s notices for patches or known compatibility issues, install available Windows updates, and compare your PC with the requirements on the game’s official page or store listing. Steam’s general launch troubleshooting also recommends updating Windows and computer drivers and checking system requirements (Steam Support).

Requirements are title-specific. For example, Steam lists separate minimum and recommended specifications for Dark Souls: Remastered; those figures do not establish what another remaster needs (Steam: DARK SOULS: REMASTERED).
If the game crashes or will not start
Verify files for a Steam installation
- Restart the PC and Steam.
- In your Steam Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Choose Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam says verification can help when game content is missing or the game crashes (Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files). Steam also cautions that one or more files may fail verification because local configuration files are not meant to be replaced. That message alone does not prove the installation is corrupt.
Check DirectX and graphics compatibility
Use the game’s requirements and publisher instructions to determine which graphics API or features it needs. To see DirectX and driver information on Windows, run DxDiag (search for “DxDiag” from Start). Microsoft explains that DirectX is part of Windows and that its version and update route depend on the Windows release. On Windows 10 and 11, use Windows Update for the DirectX version included with that operating system; do not assume a separate generic package will provide a newer version (Microsoft: Which version of DirectX is on your PC?; Microsoft: Install the latest version of DirectX).

If the game runs but stutters
Test one setting at a time
- Confirm the intended GPU. On a multi-GPU PC, check that the game is using the graphics processor you intend it to use.
- Compare display modes. If the game offers them, test windowed or borderless mode against full-screen, changing only that setting. Record whether the stutter changes.
- On Windows 11, test windowed-game optimization only where it applies. Microsoft’s Optimizations for windowed games setting is for compatible DirectX 10/11 games running windowed or borderless. You can turn it off for an individual app as a diagnostic test; it is not a guaranteed fix for every game or rendering path (Microsoft: Optimizations for windowed games).
Also consider whether other processes or general PC conditions coincide with the slowdown. Microsoft lists background startup apps, storage limits, outdated software and older hardware among possible causes of slow PC performance (Microsoft: Tips to improve PC performance in Windows).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck for background software conflicts
If simpler checks do not help, isolate possible interference from non-essential software. Steam recommends disabling non-essential software as part of its general troubleshooting guidance (Steam Support). A Windows clean boot is a more controlled diagnostic: it starts Windows with essential drivers and startup programs so you can check whether another app or service is involved (Microsoft: How to perform a clean boot in Windows).
A clean boot temporarily changes startup behavior. Keep track of anything you disable and restore Normal startup after testing. If the game behaves differently in a clean boot, re-enable items methodically to narrow down the conflict rather than leaving unrelated startup services disabled.

If the whole display flickers or scrambles
Distinguish a game-only problem from a display-driver symptom. If the screen flickers or becomes corrupted outside the game too, open Task Manager and observe whether it flickers as well. Microsoft says this can help distinguish a display-driver issue from an incompatible app. Depending on what changed and when, Microsoft lists updating, rolling back or reinstalling the display driver as options to investigate (Microsoft: Troubleshoot screen flickering in Windows).
Do not treat driver removal as a routine first step for stutter that occurs only inside one game.
When to contact the game’s support team
If the crash or stutter remains, contact the publisher or the support team for the storefront or game. Include the exact error text, game edition and launcher, Windows version, PC specifications, the steps that reproduce the issue, and the checks you have already tried. For an unnamed game and PC, general troubleshooting cannot identify a unique cause; the game’s support team can assess its own compatibility notes and defect reports.
