Root of Nightmares is a four-encounter Destiny 2 raid: Cataclysm, Scission, Macrocosm, and Nezarec. Its shared mechanic is a pair of node chains: follow the beam from an active Light or Darkness aura, carry the matching buff to the exposed node, and confirm the link before refreshing. This walkthrough follows the raid in order, with roles, callouts, traversal routes, and the Refuge mechanic explained where you need them.
Check the activity and set up your fireteam
Root of Nightmares is listed among Destiny 2’s available raids. Bungie currently divides activity content between the Portal and World tabs; check the raid’s live activity card for its settings rather than relying on a fixed Power, featured status, Champion lineup, modifier, challenge, or reward claim. Those details can change. Bungie’s Update 9.7.0 notes in 2026 included fixes affecting the Explicator encounter and Nezarec’s critical spots, another reason to follow current in-game behavior if an old callout does not work.

Raids are designed for up to six players. Before launching, assign stable player labels and agree whether the group is pursuing an active Challenge, a permanent Triumph, a Master/title objective, hidden chests, a Deepsight chest, or lore pickups. For a straightforward clear, designate a Cataclysm runner and backup, then Light and Darkness runners for Scission and Nezarec. In Macrocosm, agree on platform names and corner callouts before starting.
Learn the Light and Darkness node chains
Both node networks use the same basic relay. An active aura grants a buff when you stand in it, and its beam points toward the next exposed node. Carry the matching buff to that destination, stand on its plate, and shoot the node. A successful link exposes the next destination in the chain.

- From the makers of the acclaimed hit game Destiny, comes the much-anticipated sequel
- An action shooter that takes you on an epic journey across the solar system
- Humanity’s last safe city has fallen to an overwhelming invasion force, led by Ghaul, the imposing commander of the brutal Red Legion
- To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity’s scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home
- Stand inside the active aura and shoot its seed to receive the displayed buff: Field of Light for Light or Flux of Darkness for Darkness.
- Follow the beam to the exposed destination node. Stand on its plate and shoot the node while carrying the correct buff.
- Call that the node is linked, then return to the aura to refresh when the chain requires it.
Use a clear confirmation such as “Light linked — safe to refresh.” Refreshing before the destination registers can interrupt the chain. Follow the HUD timer rather than assuming a universal buff duration: published descriptions disagree on nominal timing. One runner per chain is usually easiest to teach and recover; two can move faster if the team has agreed on a cadence.
Cataclysm: complete four Light chains before Sweeping Terror expires
Assign the runner and timer team
Cataclysm combines a single Field of Light chain with a countdown called Sweeping Terror. Assign one Light runner, with a backup ready to take over if needed. The other players locate and defeat paired Psions inside protective bubbles. Killing both spawns a Tormentor; defeating it extends the timer.
Run the chain while clearing enemies
From the rally point, face into the curved arena. The runner shoots the active aura, follows its beam to the exposed destination, links that node, and calls the link before refreshing. Do not memorize permanent node numbers: the beam identifies the next destination. The rest of the team should keep ordinary Cabal under control while finding the Psion pairs and handling each Tormentor. To bring a Tormentor down, break its shoulders to expose its chest, then defeat it.
Complete four consecutive Light links to finish the encounter. If Sweeping Terror is close to expiring, prioritize the Psions and Tormentor; do not count on a skipped Tormentor unless the team has verified that option in its current run.

Near the later part of the climb, look across a chasm for a high wall with three openings. The first hidden chest is through the middle opening. Follow that branch, defeat the Tormentor and Cabal, and collect the chest before returning to the main route. The branch also contains an Inspiral lore pickup.
Scission: relay both chains across three floors
Set sides from each floor’s starting point
Scission is a paired relay across a gap. On each of three floors, one runner advances the Darkness chain and another advances the Light chain. At the start of each floor, face its far end: Darkness and Flux are on the left; Light and Field are on the right. Treat that as a floor-specific orientation, not a global left/right rule.
Link nodes and launch upward
- Each runner takes the matching buff from the home aura and crosses the gap using the launcher.
- At the far side, the runner activates the exposed destination node, then uses the launcher to return and refresh from the home aura as needed.
- Support players clear enemies and attuned targets on both sides. Finish the full node chains and enemy wave before the team launches to the next floor.
Make the transition callout explicit—for example, “Dark runner set — Right shoot”—and confirm which floor and side the instruction refers to. A runner should call each link so the group knows the chain advanced before anyone refreshes.
Refuge traversal and second hidden chest
Make Darkness’s Refuge
The traversal before Macrocosm teaches Refuge, which protects players from the environmental wipe pulse. To create Darkness’s Refuge, carry Field of Light to a completed Dark node that is not the active aura. Stand in the resulting field and confirm the Refuge buff on the HUD before the pulse, then move on to the next relay. Refuge does not protect against unrelated attacks.
Find the chest branch
After the six-player door, reach the broad building with zigzag stairs. From its upper-right exterior edge, shoot the Darkness crux on a low platform near the distant structure. Return to the building and enter the newly opened upper doorway to find the second hidden chest and a lore pickup, then continue along the main route.

Macrocosm: Zo’Aurc, Explicator of Planets
Agree on geometry and reveal planet affinities
The encounter is a sorting and matching puzzle followed by plate-based damage. From the rally point facing Zo’Aurc, identify the Near and Far platforms on each side. Before the fight, agree on corner terms such as Rally, Wall, and Boss; these let players report a planet’s location and affinity without ambiguity.
Defeat Honored Centurions to spawn Terrestrial Lieutenants. A final blow on a Lieutenant grants Planetary Insight, which reveals the true affinities of that side’s planets. Find the out-of-place planets and move them to the opposite side until every Light planet is on the left and every Darkness planet is on the right. Then defeat the next Centurions and Lieutenants to reveal the central arrangement.

Read the three central planets and call their affinities and positions. Move planets that match those center affinities onto their corresponding floor plates. For example, “Center: Near Light, Middle Dark, Far Light” gives the team the sequence it needs; callouts such as “Far Left — Boss is Dark” are useful only if everyone has agreed what “Boss” and “Wall” mean.
During damage, stand on the plate matching Zo’Aurc’s current shield. When he becomes immune, move to the next matching plate. Save ammunition across the encounter’s damage segments and final stand instead of planning around one uninterrupted burn; weapon recommendations can change with the activity’s live modifiers.

Nezarec: finish both chains, control his gaze, and make Refuge
Assign Light, Darkness, and gaze roles
From the rally point facing Nezarec’s starting platform, Light begins on the left and Darkness on the right. Assign one runner to each node network and a gaze controller to watch Nezarec’s weak points. Both networks must be completed to open damage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Breaking both shoulders produces a burst that signals the coming wipe and reveals which affinity of Refuge the team needs. The shoulder’s affinity determines the required protection. To create Darkness’s Refuge, carry Field of Light to a completed Dark node. To create Light’s Refuge, carry Flux of Darkness to a completed Light node. In either case, use a completed node that is not the active aura.
Call the Refuge and control Nezarec’s attention
After creating the matching field, players who need protection must enter it and verify the Refuge buff on their HUD before the wipe pulse. Refuge blocks that environmental wipe, not Nezarec’s ordinary attacks or damage from other enemies.
Breaking Nezarec’s chest weak point gives the team Nezarec’s Hatred, drawing his attention away from the runners. Re-break the chest when needed to renew control. Keep the weak-point callout and Refuge callout separate: one tells the team how to manage his gaze, while the other tells them which protection to create.
Use the damage opening and prepare for later phases
Once both node networks are complete, agree on a damage plate and use the opening to attack. Continue managing his weak points as the encounter resets, and preserve suitable damage resources for later phases and final stand. No named weapon, subclass, or Super is required by the mechanics; build around assigned roles and the activity’s current modifiers rather than treating an old loadout recommendation as mandatory.

The raid guide distinguishes rotating encounter Challenges from permanent Triumphs. The listed encounter Challenges are Illuminated Torment, Crossfire, Cosmic Equilibrium, and All Hands; the corresponding permanent Triumphs are Psionic Purge, Shields Up, Singular Orbit, and Synchronicity. The guide says Challenges can reward on Standard as well as Master and that Final Nightmare requires all four Challenges on Master. Check the live activity card before attempting these objectives because challenge availability and reward conditions can change.
Root of Nightmares rewards in-game weapons and armor. Its encounter pool includes weapons such as Rufus’s Fury, Mykel’s Reverence, Nessa’s Oblation, Acasia’s Dejection, and Conditional Finality, but a specific drop, farmability, or reward tier is not guaranteed by this walkthrough. Check the current activity details for featured status, difficulty, and reward quality.
