Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake serves up the pleasures of a traditional turn-based RPG: build a party, choose vocations, explore a fantasy world and take on the Archfiend Baramos. Its pixel-art characters and 3D environments give the classic quest a fresh look, while adjustable battle speed and auto-battle make its familiar rhythm easier to tailor. The comfort-food comparison fits—but players who want a fast pace may find its frequent battles a drawback.

What is Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?

Square Enix describes the game as a reimagining of Dragon Quest III and the narrative beginning of the Erdrick Trilogy. Its story starts with Ortega setting out to defeat the Archfiend Baramos and failing. On the protagonist’s sixteenth birthday, the king of Aliahan asks Ortega’s child to continue the quest. The setup is a straightforward fantasy call to adventure, rooted in the original game’s premise. Square Enix’s overview provides the publisher’s description.

What makes it feel like a classic RPG?

Party building and vocations

You assemble a party of up to four characters, including the Hero, and shape it by selecting vocations and roles. Nintendo highlights familiar choices such as Warrior, Thief, Mage and Martial Artist. This is a game where deciding who travels with you and what each character contributes is part of the appeal—not an action RPG built around one continuously controlled fighter. Nintendo’s game listing describes the party and class structure.

Exploration and turn-based combat

The core loop is deliberately recognizable: explore towns, caves and other locations, then fight enemies in turn-based command battles. You choose actions for your party rather than relying on real-time attacks. Square Enix lists adjustable battle speed and auto-battle among the remake’s quality-of-life features, so players have some control over the pace of routine combat without changing the game’s underlying structure. Square Enix’s feature overview covers those options.

#1 Best Overall
DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake (NSW)
  • DRAGON QUEST III HD-2D Remake is a stunning reimagining of the beloved masterpiece and narrative beginning to The Erdrick Trilogy – the first three games of the mainline DRAGON QUEST series. Featuring vibrant HD-2D graphics, new and modernized features, and a refined narrative, players are invited to set out on an epic fantasy adventure to save the world from a dark evil.
  • A fully modernized remake of the original: Stunning HD-2D visuals fuse pixel art with 3D graphics, bringing players into the world of DRAGON QUEST III like never before, along with an improved and modernized UI, and other quality of life improvements.
  • Traditional DRAGON QUEST style battles: A refined take on the classic turn-based battle system, featuring new animations, additional improvements such as an adjustable battle speed, an auto-battle setting, and more.
  • Immersive world: Deep exploration of a vast world map with an abundance of rich and captivating locations to discover, challenging players to overcome many unexpected encounters during the journey.
  • Experience a timeless musical score: An immersive, authentic, and diverse musical composition that captures the timeless essence and magic of the DRAGON QUEST universe.

Pixel art in a 3D world

The HD-2D presentation pairs classic 2D pixel characters with dimensional environments and dynamic 3D backgrounds. That contrast is central to the remake’s nostalgic appeal: it preserves an old-school visual language while giving places depth and atmosphere. Both Square Enix and Nintendo describe the combination of pixel art and 3D scenery.

What is new in the remake?

Monster Wrangler vocation

The remake adds Monster Wrangler, a new vocation that can use monster abilities for attacks against multiple enemies and for healing. Lead Producer Masaaki Hayasaka described it as “a brand-new addition” alongside classic vocations such as Warrior and Mage in Square Enix’s Monster Wrangler feature.

Friendly monsters and Monster Arenas

You can scout friendly monsters and enter them as a team of three in Monster Arenas. Before a match, you set tactics for the team; arena competitions offer prizes. It is a separate monster-focused activity alongside the main party’s adventures, not a replacement for the core vocation and exploration systems. Hayasaka’s feature overview explains the Wrangler and arena systems.

More ways to personalize the adventure

Hayasaka says players can customize party members’ appearance and voice, and choose from different personalities and vocations. A registered volunteer character can also be reused on another playthrough on the same account, retaining attributes, level and equipment. The remake further includes expanded narrative content and new secrets, as Nintendo’s listing notes. Square Enix’s announcement also identifies voiced event scenes, orchestral music and Ortega story episodes.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who might not?

The comfort-food description is an editorial shorthand, not an objective genre label. It suits players who enjoy party composition, turn-based commands, exploratory fantasy worlds and a traditional JRPG rhythm. The familiar structure and nostalgic pixel-art presentation are softened by modern conveniences, but those conveniences do not turn the game into a different kind of RPG.

Pacing is the main caveat. GamesRadar+ characterizes the game as slower-paced and says battles occur frequently, which may feel time-consuming or frustrating to some newer JRPG players. That is one outlet’s judgment, not a measured encounter-rate statistic or a universal player consensus. If you prefer rapid progression with little interruption, the traditional rhythm may be less comforting than it sounds. GamesRadar+’s review discusses the pacing.
