For Dragon Age: Origins on Steam Deck, start with the Steam Community layout Console Players on Steam Deck (Radial Menu). It translates the PC game’s mouse-and-keyboard controls into Deck inputs using the sticks, trackpads, triggers, and buttons. It is a community-made configuration—not an official BioWare or Valve preset—so treat it as a starting point and adjust it to suit your play style.

Apply the community layout

  1. On the Deck, open Dragon Age: Origins and go to its Controller page.
  2. Select Current Button Layout, then open Community Layouts.
  3. Find Console Players on Steam Deck (Radial Menu), download it, view it, and choose the option to apply it.
  4. Launch the game and try the controls in a low-risk situation before relying on them in combat.

Steam’s menus can change with updates. If the layout does not appear, the layout author recommends opening the related guide in Desktop mode and following its Steam controller link in a browser: Aximlli’s Steam Community guide.

What the layout maps to Deck controls

The author designed the layout with inspiration from the Xbox radial menu. Its published mapping is:

Deck input Mapped function
Left stick Movement
Right stick Camera
A Interact
X Swap weapon sets
Y Pause
B Skip dialogue or go back
D-pad Switch characters
Left trackpad Menus such as inventory and map
Right trackpad Actions and mouse control
Triggers Mouse clicks
Back grip Walk/run toggle

This arrangement combines stick movement with trackpad and trigger inputs for PC-style actions. If pointer selection feels awkward, try the right trackpad’s mouse control and adjust its sensitivity or activation behavior in Steam Input.

Why Steam Input is needed

The PC version is described in a Steam support discussion as lacking native controller support, so a Deck layout can translate its controls into keyboard and mouse actions through Steam Input. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified criteria also recognize that some games require players to select a community controller configuration manually.

The Dragon Age: Origins PC manual lists keyboard shortcuts for functions including the character record, journal, inventory, skills, spells and talents, area map, world map, and tactics. Use that shortcut reference when deciding which actions should be easiest to reach in a custom Steam Input layout.

Adjust the layout around your play

  • Prioritize frequent actions. If opening a menu or ability takes too many steps, consider assigning it to a radial or trackpad menu. The radial-menu implementation is user-created, so test that it behaves as you expect.
  • Protect consequential commands. Move any binding you trigger accidentally to a less exposed input. A PC Gamer reviewer reported changing a quick-load binding after accidental presses; that is one player’s experience, not evidence of a universal issue. PC Gamer’s June 30, 2026 report also describes using the right trackpad as a pointer.
  • Compare alternatives by practical fit. When browsing community layouts, consider pointer precision, access to frequently used abilities and menus, and the risk of accidentally activating consequential commands. These are useful comparison criteria, not results from a controlled test of every layout.
  • Iterate safely. Try changes in a low-risk situation, then revise the mappings that feel imprecise or hard to reach.
