There is no supported PS5 setting that unlocks 60 fps for Red Dead Redemption 2. The game runs as its PS4 version through backward compatibility, and a PS5 technical analysis updated 6 August 2026 reports that it remains capped at 30 fps. You can check for updates and troubleshoot display smoothness, but a TV, cable, or console output setting cannot be relied on to remove the game’s cap.
What performance to expect on PS5
Rockstar confirmed that the PS4 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is playable on PS5 through backward compatibility in its 6 November 2020 announcement. A specialist PS5 technical analysis last updated 6 August 2026 reports one backward-compatible mode and a 30 fps cap, with no native PS5 release or official upgrade identified as of that update. Those game-specific details are third-party analysis, not an official Rockstar specification.
Sony’s general guidance says select PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost, which can mean a higher or smoother frame rate; it does not promise a change for every game. Sony does not identify Red Dead Redemption 2 as a beneficiary in that guidance. Standard PS5 settings therefore do not offer a confirmed 60 fps option for this game.
What you can do to improve the experience
Check for game and system updates
- On the PS5 home screen, highlight Red Dead Redemption 2, press the Options button, and choose Check for Update.
- Check the console software under Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Install any updates offered, then launch the game again. An update check is sensible maintenance, not a way to enable an unannounced frame-rate mode.
Rockstar’s support hub provides Title Update 1.32 notes for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Those notes alone do not settle whether a later PS5-specific enhancement has appeared; the available specialist report is dated 6 August 2026.

Diagnose uneven-looking motion
If motion looks less smooth than expected, check the display and connection rather than treating the issue as an FPS unlock:
- Enable the television or monitor’s game mode if available, and make sure the PS5 is connected to the display’s intended HDMI input.
- Compare the PS5’s video output settings with the resolutions and refresh rates your screen accepts. A compatible output can help avoid display or handshake problems, but it does not change the game’s reported internal cap.
- If the image still appears inconsistent, test another supported display input or HDMI cable to isolate a connection issue. This is troubleshooting, not a verified performance fix for RDR2.
Do not expect a 120 Hz display, a different HDMI cable, an SSD, a cooling stand, or a console-level output change to turn this game into a 60 fps experience. No cited source verifies any of those as a way to remove the cap.

PS5 Pro and the original Red Dead Redemption are different cases
The same third-party analysis reports that PS5 Pro Game Boost can slightly improve resolution or image cleanliness while retaining the 30 fps cap. That is a reported image-quality difference, not a higher-frame-rate mode, and it is not an official Sony or Rockstar performance note.
Also distinguish Red Dead Redemption 2 from the original Red Dead Redemption. A PS5 edition or 60 fps update for the original game does not establish that RDR2 has received the same treatment. Rockstar’s backward-compatibility announcement names RDR2 as the PS4 version playable on the newer consoles.

Settings and purchases that will not unlock 60 fps
The sources located do not establish a supported RDR2 performance-mode choice on PS5. Use in-game display or accessibility options only to suit your image preferences; no official PS5 settings guide located here says those options increase frame rate. PS5 Game Presets should not be confused with a game-specific performance mode.
Buying the PS4 game makes it playable on PS5 but does not improve its performance. Sony advises players to try backward-compatible PS4 games before buying add-ons so they can decide whether they are satisfied with the experience. No accessory is supported here as a frame-rate fix.
