To extend unplugged play, start by dimming the display and lowering its refresh rate, then reduce the game’s resolution, graphics settings, or frame-rate target if you can accept the trade-off. On Windows handhelds, also try the built-in efficiency power settings and limit unnecessary background activity. These changes can reduce power use, but the extra time you gain depends on the device, game, settings, and battery condition; there is no reliable universal runtime figure.
Start with the changes that are easiest to reverse
Make one adjustment at a time and play long enough to decide whether the change is worth keeping. The goal is not the lowest possible power use; it is a balance of runtime, visibility, smoothness, and game performance that works for you.
Lower brightness
Reduce screen brightness to a comfortable level. A dimmer display may be less visible in a bright room, so use the lowest setting that remains practical for where you are playing. Microsoft includes display brightness among its Windows power-saving recommendations: Microsoft’s Windows 11 battery-saving tips.
Choose a lower refresh rate
A lower refresh rate can reduce display power use, though motion may look less smooth. On a Windows handheld, check Settings > System > Display > Advanced display for a refresh-rate selector; not every device exposes the same options. Lenovo describes 60 Hz as adequate for most situations and energy efficient in its Legion Go Gen 2 user guide. Microsoft also notes that higher refresh rates use more power in its Windows battery guidance.

Steam Support’s search excerpt says the refresh rate can be lowered in Steam Deck device settings, and that setting an application above the model’s refresh-rate cap will not improve performance and may drain charge faster. The support page did not expose readable instructions for a complete menu walkthrough, so check the current on-device settings or Steam guidance for your Deck model rather than relying on a fixed path: Steam Support search for refresh rate.
Reduce the game’s workload if the display changes are not enough
A game that asks the handheld to render more detail or frames requires more work from the system. Try lowering resolution, selecting a less demanding graphics preset, or setting a lower frame-rate target. Each can reduce image detail or smoothness, and the best compromise varies by game and player.
Test each change on its own. Keep the highest resolution, visual quality, and frame rate that feel worth their power cost to you. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a cross-game percentage or number of extra minutes from any particular setting, so treat your own device and game as the useful test case.

Windows settings that can help during play
Select a more efficient power mode
Open Settings > System > Power & battery and try Best Power Efficiency under the power mode options, if available. Microsoft says this mode limits background activity. Also try Energy saver where available; it dims the display and limits background processes. Exact labels and availability can vary by Windows version and device. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage to see which apps have used battery. If Windows offers a background-activity control for an app you do not need during play, restrict it. You can also turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth when you are not using them. Windows options differ by version, and some apps or devices may not offer a background restriction.
Set idle timers for pauses
Shorten the screen-off and sleep timers if you often leave the handheld idle between sessions. These settings conserve power while the device is not being used, rather than reducing the power required to run a game. Use the handheld maker’s controls as well as Windows
Many Windows gaming handhelds have manufacturer software that manages performance and power alongside Windows. The options and their effects depend on the model and app version, and a maker’s setting can interact with the Windows power selection.
Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2
Legion Space offers thermal modes and OS power modes. Lenovo says its thermal modes differ in maximum performance, power use, and fan speed; its Best power efficiency option is intended for battery use, while Balanced trades performance against power. The guide does not give a universal runtime increase for each mode. Consult the Legion Go Gen 2 user guide for the controls on that model.

ASUS handhelds
ASUS documents that Power Mode Synchronization can allow Armoury Crate or another ASUS management app to change the Windows power-mode selection. If the Windows mode seems to change after you set it, check the ASUS app and its synchronization setting. Steam Deck settings and model-specific caveats
The available Steam Support material supports a limited refresh-rate recommendation, but not a complete, verified Deck menu walkthrough. Look for the current refresh-rate control in the Deck’s device settings, and avoid assuming that an application frame-rate setting above the display’s refresh-rate cap will make the game perform better. Steam says such a setting may drain charge faster without improving performance: Steam Support search for refresh rate.
Steam Deck models and software can differ, and settings may move as the interface changes. If the control is absent or named differently, check the current device guide. The cited guidance does not establish a Deck-specific TDP or frame-limit menu procedure, so this article does not prescribe one.
Know what settings can—and cannot—fix
Power-saving settings reduce current consumption; they do not restore capacity lost as a battery ages. Microsoft notes that lithium-ion battery capacity declines with charge and discharge cycles. Do not expect one runtime estimate to fit every handheld. Model, game, brightness, refresh rate, power mode, and battery condition all matter, and the cited official sources do not provide matched gaming-runtime tests across Steam Deck and Windows handhelds.
When you need more play time away from an outlet
A USB-C PD power bank may be useful when settings alone do not provide enough unplugged time. Check the handheld maker’s charging requirements and the power bank’s compatibility before buying; the available guidance here does not establish specific power-bank models, wattages, cables, device fit, runtime, or airline eligibility.
