To reach Ante 8 in Balatro, build a scoring engine around the Jokers and hands your run actually offers, then adjust it for each blind—especially the Boss Blind. Treat cash, skips, and hand upgrades as trade-offs, not fixed rules: a purchase that helps you clear a blind in fewer hands can be worth more than saving, while a skip can pay off when its tag fits your situation.
Know what you are trying to clear
A standard Ante contains a Small Blind, a Big Blind, and a Boss Blind; the traditional run ends with a special Boss Blind in the final Ante. Boss Blinds impose restrictions, so there is no single hand or Joker setup that works unchanged from start to finish. These basics are described in the official Balatro FAQ.

Your goal is not to follow a predetermined build. It is to make the scoring requirement for the current blind with the resources and hands your run can reliably produce.

Build around the scoring engine you find
Jokers can affect score in different ways: some add Mult, some multiply it, some alter how number cards behave, and others help generate money. Judge each offer by how it changes your current build and what hands you can actually make, rather than by a context-free tier list. The official FAQ notes the breadth of Joker effects; the community guide that inspired this advice likewise frames choices around the run. Its author’s suggested threshold for whether a Joker improves a score is a personal heuristic, not a game rule or a guarantee.

Check what a Joker does for this run
- Does it directly improve the score of hands you already play?
- Does it help you make those hands more consistently?
- Does it provide money or another benefit that can improve later shops?
- Does it complement your other Jokers, or does it ask you to pursue a hand your deck rarely produces?
A Joker that saves hands now may also help your economy by letting you finish a blind sooner. Conversely, a money-generating effect can be valuable even if it does not immediately raise the score. Consider the whole run, but do not buy an offer solely because it looks strong in isolation.
Spend and save with a purpose
The Reddit guide’s author recommends keeping $25 to maximize interest. Treat that as a useful target, not a law: the discussion under the guide points out that an immediate scoring improvement may clear a blind in fewer hands and help you build cash sooner. The right choice depends on whether you can survive the next blind without the purchase and what the purchase adds to your engine.

Decide whether a blind skip is worth it
Skipping is a trade-off, not an automatic mistake or a default strategy. Playing a blind can provide its payout, interest, opportunities for scaling, and access to a shop. A skip may instead offer a valuable tag or help when the current run is in a difficult state. Compare the skip’s promised reward with what you expect to gain by playing the blind; the Reddit guide and its commenters discuss both the costs and cases where a skip can be worthwhile.
Upgrade hands your build can reliably play
Balatro includes hands made from one to five cards, and Planet cards are a usual way to upgrade a hand during a run. The community-maintained Poker Hands reference covers hand types, but exact current values should be checked against the in-game descriptions rather than assumed from a secondary reference.

Choose upgrades that match the scoring effects and card patterns your run supports. Do not commit to one hand merely because it worked early: your available Jokers, deck, and later scoring requirements may point toward a different reliable hand.

Joker order can change the final score when additive and multiplicative Mult effects resolve in sequence. A community-created, unofficial activation sequence guide explains the ordering and gives this example: with a base score of 40 × 4, a +4 Mult effect and a ×2 Mult effect, additive Mult first produces 40 × ((4 + 4) × 2) = 640; reversing the order produces 40 × ((4 × 2) + 4) = 480.

- 150 Jokers, each with their own unique abilities.
- 15 Decks with distinct modifiers to choose from for each run.
- 5 potential variants of each Joker which add further abilities.
- 22 Tarot cards variants that can enhance your regular playing cards.
- 11 Planet cards that help level up your possible poker hands.
Use the active effects’ actual activation sequence to decide placement; the example illustrates why order can matter, not a universal placement rule for every Joker combination.
Adapt to the Boss Blind
Before playing a Boss Blind, inspect its restriction and plan your hand, card selection, and Joker interactions accordingly. A restriction can undermine a plan that worked against the previous blind, so reassess rather than trying to force the same hand through every encounter. The official FAQ confirms that Boss Blinds impose restrictions that affect play.
Reassess as the run approaches Ante 8
At each shop and blind, compare the score you need with your remaining hands, the hands you can reliably assemble, and how your Jokers interact. Early success with one hand does not make it the right late-run plan. Strategy can change with the build and stake, as players discuss in the original community thread; respond to the current requirement and next Boss Blind rather than relying on a fixed recipe.
