The finished set has 1,478 pieces and eight minifigures. It is an official adaptation of the contest entry, not the original model reproduced unchanged.
How the ’90s contest led to an official X-Files set
LEGO Ideas’ “Build Your Nostalgia” challenge invited fans to create builds celebrating the 1990s. The winning entry, “The X-Files: The Truth Is Out There,” was designed by WetWired, identified by LEGO as Brent Waller. The fan model combined Mulder’s basement office with a forest UFO scene. IGN India reported the contest result and described the submission.

A contest selection puts a concept in development; it does not guarantee that LEGO will sell the submission exactly as designed. LEGO explains that selected Ideas submissions may be considered for official production through a challenge or community support on its LEGO Ideas program page.
What changed between the fan model and the retail set?
Contemporary coverage described the contest entry as roughly 2,020 pieces with seven figures. The finished retail set has 1,478 pieces and eight minifigures, and LEGO presents a revised official model. These counts refer to different versions, not a discrepancy in the product listing.

Is Scully’s Lab still a free gift?
LEGO also listed The X-Files: Scully’s Lab (40896), a 221-piece mini build featuring Scully in a lab coat and scrubs. LEGO’s announcement described it as a gift with purchase of set 21369 from August 1 through August 10, 2026, while supplies lasted. That promotion period has passed; the item’s listing does not mean the offer is still active.

Why the contest entry mattered to the creator
LEGO’s announcement quotes Waller saying, “I was obsessed with The X-Files from the moment I first saw it in the ’90s.” He said he had built Mulder’s office in 2014 before expanding the project. The contest provided a route for that fan concept to be considered for an official LEGO Ideas release, while the final product reflects LEGO’s own development of the design.
