In Minesweeper, reveal every safe cell without opening a mine. Each number tells you exactly how many mines touch that cell—including diagonals—so the reliable way to play is to count covered neighbors, compare clues, and only mark a mine when the evidence supports it. Some boards still reach a point where logic cannot choose between two cells, so a guess may be unavoidable.
What does the number in a cell mean?
A revealed number counts mines in all eight surrounding cells: the four cells sharing a side and the four diagonal cells. A 1 means exactly one of those neighbors contains a mine; a 3 means exactly three do. The number does not identify which neighbors are mines by itself.

A blank cell has no neighboring mines. Many versions automatically reveal nearby safe cells when you open one, producing a cascade. The exact behavior and controls depend on the game.
How to solve a clue step by step
- Start at the boundary. Choose a revealed clue that touches covered cells, then count every covered neighbor, including diagonals.
- Subtract confirmed mines. If you have established that some neighboring cells contain mines, subtract their count from the clue. Do not count a mark as confirmed just because you placed a flag on it.
- Compare what remains. If the remaining mine count is zero, all other covered neighbors are safe. If it equals the number of remaining covered neighbors, every one of those cells is a mine.
- Compare overlapping clues. Nearby numbers may share some covered neighbors. Their different requirements can reveal what is true about the shared cells or about cells seen by only one clue.
- Update and repeat. Once a cell is identified, use that information to recalculate every clue it touches.
For example, if a 2 already touches one confirmed mine and has two other covered neighbors, exactly one of those two is a mine. Neither individual cell is yet identified; look for another clue that constrains them.

How do basic edge patterns work?
Common patterns are shorthand for comparing overlapping groups of covered cells. They are not reliable just because particular digits appear next to one another: first verify which covered cells actually touch each clue. An extra covered neighbor can change the deduction.
Comparing two 1s
Suppose one 1 touches two unknown cells, and a second 1 sees those same two cells plus one additional cell. The shared pair already contains exactly one mine to satisfy the first clue. The extra cell cannot be a mine, so it is safe.

Comparing a 1 and a 2
If the second clue sees the same pair of unknown cells as the 1, plus one additional cell, then the 2 needs one more mine than the 1. The extra cell must be a mine.
Reading 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 shapes
These familiar edge arrangements extend the same overlapping-constraint reasoning. Check the actual layout and each clue’s covered neighbors before applying a remembered pattern. If a clue touches cells outside the assumed group, the usual conclusion may not hold.

How should you use flags?
A flag is a player’s marker for a suspected mine; it is not proof that the cell contains one. Use flags to keep track of deductions, especially when several clues are active, but distinguish confirmed mines from guesses.
A clue is often called satisfied when confirmed neighboring mines account for its full number. Its other covered neighbors are safe, provided those mines really are confirmed. You can reveal those neighbors one at a time or use chording.

What is chording, and when is it safe?
Chording is a shortcut that opens the unflagged neighbors of a revealed number when the number of adjacent flags matches the clue. Controls vary: some games use a mouse button combination, while others offer a tap, keyboard action, or menu command.

If even one flag is misplaced, chording can open a mine. Use it only when the marked mines are supported by deductions, not merely because the flag total matches.

Do all Minesweeper games have the same first move and board?
No. Opening protection, controls, board dimensions, mine density, and whether a board can require guessing vary by implementation. For example, the Minesweeper.org guide says its first click is safe, while MinesweeperHQ says its game places mines after the first click and protects both the clicked cell and its immediate neighbors. Check the rules for the specific game you are playing rather than assuming every version behaves alike.
The Minesweeper.org guide lists Beginner as a 9×9 board with 10 mines. That is one common configuration, not a universal standard; other games can use different sizes and mine counts. When choosing a version or practice mode, check its first-click protection, guess policy, input controls, and board dimensions.
Is Minesweeper luck or skill?
It is both, depending on the board and the position. Many moves can be solved from the clues, but a random board can leave two or more covered cells indistinguishable. For example, if a 1 touches exactly two covered cells and no other clue or remaining-mine information separates them, either one could contain the mine.

Before guessing, inspect other revealed clues and consider how many mines remain on the board. If no available information distinguishes the candidates, the position is genuinely ambiguous. A no-guess mode aims to generate boards with a logical route, but guarantees and generation rules are specific to the implementation.
Minesweeper Coop reports measurements for its own no-guess generator on a 20×16 board: it says 17% of candidates were solvable at 18.8% mine density, 7% at 20.6%, 3% at 22%, and 0.3% at 24%. These are service-specific, operator-reported figures, not general probabilities for Minesweeper boards. The same page reports that, over 200 games on each board size, generation at 20.6% density did not fall through to an unchecked board at 300 attempts, while 22% density did. The publication date for that page is not stated; the figures were accessed October 11, 2026.
