A Cause Worth Killing For is the opening main quest in The Outer Worlds 2, set at Horizon Point Station. The route takes you from de Vries’s briefing through the station and into the Skip Labs. Your main branch is whether to use Security Ops or Central Dispatch; the choice affects a unique interaction with Niles Abara. If you want Cadet Corbin’s missable side task, offer to help with his demerits before persuading him to lower the bridge.

Quest objectives at a glance

  1. Contact de Vries for the mission briefing.
  2. Infiltrate Horizon Point.
  3. Choose Security Ops or Central Dispatch.
  4. Regroup with your crewmates.
  5. Gain access to the Skip Labs.
  6. Rendezvous with de Vries at the Skip Labs.

The detailed route and choice information below is attributed to Game8’s walkthrough, updated November 6, 2025. Its indexed result provides these details, but the page itself returned a payment-required error when accessed. Treat route-specific instructions as guide-reported rather than independently confirmed. Game8: A Cause Worth Killing For Walkthrough | Outer Worlds 2

Start the mission and sabotage the transformer

  1. After character creation, speak with Niles Abara to get the Tactical Time Dilation Gadget, then use the intercom to contact de Vries.
  2. Infiltrate Horizon Point and reach the transformer room. Take the Transformer Manual from a locker if you do not have Engineering 1; the guide says the manual is unnecessary with that skill level. Pick up the Pitchball Card: Nathan Lawter from a compartment in the room.
  3. Sabotage the transformer. Later, remove the Backup Power Core from the communications console. Game8 says Hack 1 or the Innovative trait can unlock the console’s Media Port.

Choose Security Ops or Central Dispatch

At the station’s security branch, choose either Security Ops or Central Dispatch. Game8 reports that Central Dispatch allows a unique interaction with Niles when you regroup with your crewmates; choosing Security Ops locks out that interaction. The guide does not establish that either route is universally better, so choose based on whether that Niles exchange matters to you.

Reach the Skip Labs

Game8 describes two ways to get access: persuade Cadet Corbin to lower the bridge or take the Pumping Station route.

Persuade Corbin and keep his side task available

If you want to pursue The Cadet’s Degrading Dilemma, offer to help Corbin with his demerits while convincing him to lower the bridge. Game8 marks the task as missable and specifies Speech 1 on Story difficulty for the persuasion check. According to the guide, failing to convince Corbin makes him hostile and blocks the task.

Take the Pumping Station route

This alternative requires a Pumping Station Keycard or a Mag-Pick together with Lockpick 1. In the corridor, the guide says you can move through vents or fight your way through. It also describes lowering the energy shield with Hack 1 and a bypass shunt, with a nearby vent as another way around the obstacle. These requirements mean this route is not available in every character setup.

Regroup and rendezvous

After choosing a security route, regroup with your crewmates, then gain access to the Skip Labs and meet de Vries there. If you chose Central Dispatch, this regrouping is where the guide says the unique Niles interaction becomes available.

Reported transformer progression problem

Players have reported getting stuck in combat when an enemy bot remains behind a hatch near the transformer, preventing interaction with it. On October 31, 2025, Obsidian Forum Community user generousparasite wrote, “I’m permanently in combat which prevents me from interacting with the transformer to sabotage it.” That player said a grenade thrown by the hatch resolved their instance. A later reply on December 25, 2025 described a similar stuck-enemy problem but said grenades did not reach the bot. These are individual reports, not confirmation of a widespread bug or a reliable universal fix; no official patch-status information is established here.
