How to find a Sniffer Egg
Sniffers do not spawn naturally. The first one usually comes from a Sniffer Egg found by brushing suspicious sand at warm ocean ruins. Bring a brush and search the ruins’ suspicious sand blocks; brushing may uncover an egg. Minecraft’s official Sniffer feature and the Java Edition 1.20 release notes describe this route.

After you have two Sniffers, you can also produce an egg by breeding them with Torchflower Seeds.
How long does a Sniffer Egg take to hatch?
Place the egg on a block and wait. The Java Edition 1.20 release notes document approximate hatch times of 10 minutes on moss and 20 minutes on other blocks. Those are the documented 1.20 mechanics; check the behavior in your current edition and version if timing matters.

When it hatches, the baby Sniffer is called a Snifflet. Let it grow into an adult before relying on it to dig for seeds.
What do Sniffers dig up?
Adult Sniffers wander and occasionally push their noses into the ground to uncover ancient seeds. The Java Edition 1.20 notes identify two possible finds: Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pods. They can dig in grass and dirt-like blocks. These seeds are the Sniffer’s main practical use: plant them to grow distinctive crops, and use Torchflower Seeds to breed Sniffers.

How to breed Sniffers
- Find or hatch two adult Sniffers.
- Hold Torchflower Seeds and use them to tempt the Sniffers.
- When the pair breeds, collect the resulting Sniffer Egg and place it to hatch. Breeding produces an egg, not an immediately spawned baby.
What to grow from Sniffer seeds
Torchflower Seeds
Plant Torchflower Seeds on farmland to grow a Torchflower. Harvest the mature flower and replant it if you want to grow more. Torchflowers can also be crafted into orange dye. The seeds are useful beyond farming because they tempt and breed Sniffers.
Pitcher Pods
Plant Pitcher Pods on farmland. The crop grows through five stages and, when fully grown, yields a two-block-tall Pitcher Plant. The plant can be crafted into cyan dye. Minecraft’s Pitcher Pod article also describes the pod as a Sniffer-sourced seed planted in farmland.

The specific hatch times and crop details in this guide are documented in Minecraft’s Java Edition 1.20 release notes. While official Bedrock notes also include Sniffer information, the cited material does not establish complete parity across current Java and Bedrock releases. Treat exact timings and mechanics as version-specific rather than assuming every edition behaves identically.
