A modder has squeezed a desktop GeForce RTX 4090, a Ryzen 9 7950X3D and a mini-ITX motherboard into a laptop-shaped enclosure. The custom machine is about 7cm thick, weighs 6.7kg before its 1.3kg power supply, and needs to stay plugged in. It is a one-off desktop replacement—not a portable version of a standard RTX 4090 gaming laptop.
What makes this a desktop RTX 4090 laptop?
The key difference is the graphics card itself. “RTX 4090 Laptop GPU” and “desktop GeForce RTX 4090” are not two versions of the same chip with similar limits: they use different silicon, memory configurations and power envelopes.

The different laptop power ranges reflect the figures reported by those sources; they should not be treated as a single universal limit for every laptop. TechSpot also found its RTX 4090 Laptop GPU averaged 58% faster than an RTX 3080 Ti Laptop GPU at 4K. That is a comparison with the previous-generation laptop GPU, not evidence that the laptop chip matches a desktop RTX 4090.
How heavy and portable is the custom machine?
HotHardware reports that the computer weighs 6.7kg before its external 1.3kg power supply. Carrying the machine and that supply together therefore means hauling about 8kg. The enclosure is approximately 7cm thick, and the system has no practical battery operation: it needs to remain connected to external power.

The reason is not just the weight of a large desktop graphics card. A desktop RTX 4090 draws far more power than a laptop chassis is ordinarily designed to provide or cool. The mod’s blower-style card directs hot air out of the enclosure; HotHardware reports a GPU temperature of about 70°C. That is a reported figure for this custom configuration, not a general temperature expectation for desktop RTX 4090 cards.
What performance did the build report?
PC Gamer reports a 3DMark Time Spy overall score of 28,490 and a GPU score of 36,426 for this machine. It compares the GPU score with a 21,593 RTX 4090 average and calculates a result about 68% higher. These are published benchmark figures for one custom system, not results from an independent retest. They do not establish that every desktop RTX 4090 installed in a laptop-shaped case will perform similarly.

How does this compare with a conventional RTX 4090 gaming laptop?
A conventional RTX 4090 gaming laptop is a self-contained portable computer built around the lower-power AD103 Laptop GPU. This mod instead puts desktop-class graphics hardware into a much larger, thicker system with an external power supply. Its benchmark headline comes with substantial costs in weight, power use and practicality.
- Graphics hardware: the conventional laptop uses AD103 with 16GB of GDDR6, while the desktop card is AD102 with 24GB of GDDR6X.
- Power and cooling: laptop GPU power varies by implementation; the cited sources give ranges of 80–150W and 80–175W. The desktop card in this mod is reported at roughly 450–600W, demanding a dedicated cooling and power arrangement.
- Portability: at 6.7kg without its 1.3kg supply and about 7cm thick, the custom build is not a practical battery-powered laptop.
- Performance evidence: the 3DMark result is specific to this build. It should not be used as a universal benchmark for either desktop RTX 4090s or laptop RTX 4090s.
A separate RTX 4090 laptop mod shows the risks of pushing power
Not every RTX 4090 laptop modification installs a desktop graphics card. Tom’s Hardware describes a separate project using an Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 with an RTX 4090 Laptop GPU. Its modder placed a 1mΩ resistor in parallel with the laptop GPU’s existing 5mΩ shunt, causing the GPU to report roughly one-sixth of its actual power and enabling about 240W of draw.

In synthetic benchmarks, the modified M16 averaged 19.2% higher performance than standard M16 RTX 4090 systems, while Solar Bay Extreme improved by 35.5%. The report says the GPU reached 80–84°C and that the project used PTM7950 phase-change pads and Upsiren UX Pro Ultra VRM pads. No games were tested, so those results do not establish a matching improvement in gaming. This is a distinct modification from the desktop-card build, and shunt changes carry electrical and thermal risks.

This project shows that a desktop graphics card can be incorporated into a laptop-shaped custom system, but not that it can be made into a conventional portable laptop. The desktop card’s power demand, cooling needs and size push the design toward a thick, heavy, externally powered desktop replacement. For a system that can run on its own battery, a conventional gaming laptop’s mobile GPU is the relevant comparison; for desktop-class hardware, this build demonstrates the compromises required to fit it into a laptop-like enclosure.
