A June 6, 2025 report described a limited user-level exploit demonstration on Nintendo Switch 2, credited to security researcher David Buchanan. It showed an early foothold—not a consumer-ready jailbreak or a complete console compromise. The contemporary accounts did not establish which firmware versions were affected, whether Nintendo patched this specific issue, or whether it works on current software.
What the Switch 2 demonstration showed
PC Guide reported on June 6, 2025 that David Buchanan had posted a userland return-oriented programming (ROP) exploit. ROP is a technique that redirects a program’s control flow through code already present in a process. Tom’s Hardware reported that the demonstration produced custom checkerboard graphics while remaining at user level.

That is a narrow result. The contemporary coverage said it did not provide kernel access or root privileges. These details come from those reports; they should not be read as an independently reproduced test.
Does a userland exploit mean the Switch 2 was jailbroken?
No. A userland exploit reaches a particular process or user-level environment. Kernel or system-level control is a different security boundary. The reported demonstration did not cross that boundary, and the cited coverage does not establish that it enabled arbitrary software installation, custom firmware, or bypassing game protections.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
“Cracking” can suggest a finished compromise, but that overstates what was reported. The accounts describe an early security-research result, not a released, usable jailbreak. They also provide no basis for predicting how long it might take for researchers to achieve broader access.
Is the Switch 2 vulnerable now?
The reports were published June 6, 2025, the day after the console launched. They do not identify affected firmware versions, cite a Nintendo CVE or patch for this specific finding, or confirm whether it still works. As of October 8, 2026, the reviewed sources therefore do not establish the current status of this issue. It would be inaccurate to say that current Switch 2 firmware is vulnerable—or that Nintendo patched this particular exploit—without more specific evidence.

Nintendo’s general security notice for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 says its published notices may cover affected products and versions, risk, severity, CVE identifiers, mitigations, discovery information, and publication or update dates. Nintendo also says details may be limited to avoid enabling exploitation. Its advice is: “Nintendo recommends that customers apply the latest system updates and update data, and take any specified risk mitigation measures or recommended actions.”
What Nintendo says about security support and modifications
Nintendo UK’s product security page, updated September 23, 2026, lists Switch 2 models BEE-001 and BEE-001(-01) and says security updates will be supported for at least two years, through September 23, 2028. This is a UK policy statement, not a support-period promise for every region. The page also describes how to report vulnerabilities in the UK and says eligibility for HackerOne rewards is governed by the program’s applicable terms. See Nintendo UK’s product security policy.

Nintendo’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ describes its efforts to reduce unauthorized game copies, circumvention devices and software, and counterfeit products. Nintendo says circumvention products bypass console security measures and warns that unauthorized products may damage a device, that resulting damage is not covered by its warranty, and that users may lose online functionality or find a console no longer works after network updates. Those are Nintendo’s published positions and warnings, not independent legal advice. The company states: “Online piracy and counterfeiting of Nintendo’s video game products is illegal.”

Security research on the original Nintendo Switch provides historical context, not evidence about Switch 2. A 2019 paper by Gauvain Tanguy Henri Gabriel Isidore Roussel-Tarbouriech, Noel Menard, Tyler True, Tini Vi, and Reisyukaku described a multi-stage analysis that progressed from userland execution toward the security co-processor and hardware root of trust. That work concerns the original console; it does not establish Switch 2’s architecture, defenses, or exploitability. Read the 2019 paper on security analysis of the original Nintendo Switch.
