A Game About Digging A Hole turns one simple action into a compact loop: dig in the garden of a newly purchased house, sell what you find, upgrade your tools and uncover a secret. Its developer and publisher have described a viral surge and reported audience milestones, but a live Steam trending position is not verified here. Here’s what the game is, how it spread, and where to find the original.
What is A Game About Digging A Hole?
It is a minimalist, single-player game from developer DoubleBee, published by rokaplay select and Drillhounds. The premise is exactly what the title promises: dig through the garden of a newly purchased house, collect resources, sell them, improve your equipment and continue until you discover what lies beneath. The official Steam listing classifies it as Adventure and Indie, with player tags including mining, sandbox, simulation, crafting, first-person and mystery. It released on Steam on February 7, 2025.

The concept began as an experimental digging feature for DoubleBee’s larger project Solarpunk. The developer said the feature was removed from that game and continued as a spare-time project, built in a few weeks. That origin helps explain the design’s focus: one clear, repeatable activity rather than a sprawling set of systems.

The official description keeps the loop deliberately simple: dig, sell what you find, upgrade your equipment and dig again. The discovery of a secret gives that repetition a goal, while better equipment supports progress. The game is presented as single-player; it is not the announced co-op follow-up.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.This Shovel is great for light and medium daily gardening work, especially transplanting. The long and narrow spade part easily plunges below most root systems and the narrow width allows you to cut a round 'plug' without damaging adjacent plants.Very useful for digging in tight spaces or planting small plants.
- 2. Whether it is clay-like soil, hard soil, or thick grass,Its narrow width maximizes the pressure you apply and easily penetrates the ground.Perfect garden tool for transplanting perennials
- 3.The comfortable 'D' handle provides plenty of leverage for lifting soil out of deep holes. The foot plates at the top are corrugated so less slippage and a bit longer. The handle texture of pure solid wood is more beautiful and environmentally friendly.
- 4.Lightweight but heavy duty.Weighing only 3 pounds, both the elderly and women can easily use it to complete various gardening tasks.
- 5.We specialize in the production and sales of gardening tools. If you have any questions during use, please feel free to contact us. We will reply to you as soon as possible and give you a satisfactory answer.
PC requirements
Steam lists 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, an Intel Core i5 processor, 8 GB of memory and an NVIDIA GTX 770 as minimum PC requirements. Those are the store’s stated minimums, not a promise of identical performance on every current computer.
Why did the digging game go viral?
The hook is easy to understand in a short clip: someone digs, finds something, sells it and improves their tools. The unusual contrast between an everyday chore and the promise of a hidden mystery also gives viewers an obvious question to ask—what is at the bottom? Those qualities make the premise easy to share, though they do not by themselves prove how many people encountered a post or why they bought the game.

Two accounts help explain the attention, with an important qualification: both are statements from people involved in promotion or publication, not independent social-platform analytics. In a Reddit post around launch, a marketing collaborator said the team re-edited the trailer to make the hook immediate and reported that the post went viral across social platforms except Twitter. The collaborator also reported 82,000 wishlists in four weeks. That is a firsthand campaign account, not an independently audited count.

That multiplier concerns wishlists in the report’s analysis; it is not a sales-growth figure.

How many copies or players did it reach?
The developer said in August 2025 that A Game About Digging A Hole had sold over 1 million copies. In a later official post in November 2025, the publisher said the game had reached over 1.2 million players. These are different measures—copies sold and players—and should not be treated as interchangeable or added together.
Neither milestone establishes the game’s current Steam rank, review score or sales total. Those figures change over time, and the available dated announcements do not verify a live “trending on Steam” position on October 4, 2026.

Is there a sequel?
A follow-up, A Game About Digging A Hole Together, was announced on September 29, with development handed to Mi’Pu’Mi Games. The planned game is described as supporting online co-op for up to four people and crossplay, alongside solo play. The announcement also lists a larger world, different terrain, four upgradeable tool categories, more underground discoveries, a beach setting and collectibles. No release date was given, so it should be treated as announced and in development, not as an available game.
That makes the distinction straightforward: the original is a single-player digging game, while the announced follow-up is intended to add cooperative play and crossplay. The announcement does not establish when those features will be available.
Is there an official book or physical edition?
The related story A Tale About Digging a Hole is an exclusive Steam eBook. Steam lists it as downloadable content and offers it in a story bundle with the game. That is a digital tie-in; the official information does not establish a print book, physical game edition or other branded physical product.
