Nintendo ended online play and other internet-connected functions for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family software at 5 p.m. PDT on April 8, 2024. That did not switch off the consoles: offline modes remain usable, and 3DS StreetPass still works locally. Nintendo had already closed eShop purchases and free-content downloads in 2023, while previously purchased software and updates remained available for redownload “for the foreseeable future,” with no firm end date.
What ended on April 8, 2024?
Nintendo discontinued online play and other functions that use online communication for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family software, including software exclusive to New Nintendo 3DS. The shutdown took effect at 5 p.m. PDT on April 8, 2024. Nintendo’s announcement lists online co-operative play, internet rankings and data distribution among the affected functions. Nintendo’s online-service notice says, “Players are still able to use features and game modes that do not require online communication.”

The change applies to Nintendo’s online services, not every feature in every game. A game may still have a playable single-player campaign or other offline modes, but the details depend on how that individual title was designed. Nintendo also notes that third-party publishers may provide separate information about services for their games, so a publisher-operated feature should be checked with that publisher rather than assumed to share a uniform status.

Offline and local play
Disconnecting a game from Nintendo’s online services does not by itself disable modes that do not need an internet connection. On 3DS, StreetPass is a separate case: it exchanges data through local communication between nearby systems, so Nintendo says it remains available.
#1 Best Overall
- Controllers are original OEM (not 3rd party)
- Tested and works well. Nice condition
SpotPass and other online features
SpotPass relies on online communication, unlike StreetPass. Online-dependent SpotPass features ended with the online services; Nintendo says, for example, that 3DS systems will no longer receive new Puzzle Swap panels. Other game-specific functions that depend on Nintendo’s online infrastructure, such as rankings or online co-op, are also unavailable.
Can Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter still be used?
Nintendo listed Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter as exceptions to the general shutdown in its notice. The announcement did not promise that they would remain available indefinitely; Nintendo cautioned that these services could also end in the future. Treat the exception as a status at the time of that notice, not a guarantee of long-term availability.

What happened to the Wii U and 3DS eShop?
The eShop closure was a separate change that happened before the online-play shutdown. Nintendo ended purchases and downloads of free content, including demos, on March 27, 2023. Redemption of download codes ended April 3, 2023. Nintendo described the change as part of “the natural lifecycle for any product line as it becomes less used by consumers over time.” Nintendo’s North American eShop Q&A gives the timeline and its explanation.
Nintendo said existing purchases and downloadable content could still be redownloaded, and software updates received, for the foreseeable future. That wording is not a fixed service guarantee: Nintendo did not state a cutoff date. It applies to redownloading content already owned, not buying new games or downloading new free content.

Nintendo warns that unofficial services imitating Wii U network features are unsupported and may carry unexpected security risks. This warning is Nintendo’s stated position, not a claim that every community project has been independently assessed. Using a replacement service does not restore Nintendo’s official online service, and readers should consider the security and account risks before connecting a console to an unofficial network.
