VVVVVV is a precision platform game where Captain Viridian flips gravity to move between floor and ceiling instead of jumping. That single rule drives its hazards, challenge rooms, and exploration as Viridian searches for a missing crew. The original Steam edition dates to 2010; the Nintendo Switch edition followed in 2017, and the developer’s desktop download page lists version 2.4.4.
How does VVVVVV play?
Rather than jump over an obstacle, Captain Viridian reverses gravity, moving from the floor to the ceiling or back again. The challenge comes from choosing when and where to flip: a mistimed reversal can send Viridian into spikes or other hazards, while a well-timed one opens a route through the room. Steam describes the central question as “what if you reversed gravity instead of jumping?” Steam’s game page presents it as a platform game built around that mechanic.
This is not a conventional jump-based platformer with gravity inversion added as a secondary ability. Inverting gravity is the basic movement tool, and the game builds its platforming and puzzles around it.
What is the story about?
Captain Viridian’s crew has been teleported away, and the captain sets out to find and rescue them. The rescue mission gives the exploration a clear purpose, while the progression is challenge-based rather than built around collecting keys or unlocking power-ups, according to Steam’s description.

What are the areas, challenges, and collectibles like?
The game links exploration with demanding individual rooms. Frequent checkpoints, listed on both Steam and Nintendo’s product page, mark progress through the hazards. Nintendo describes the Switch edition as a challenging 2D action/platformer with hundreds of rooms and puzzles, six unique areas, and 20 collectible trinkets. Nintendo’s Switch listing is the source for those counts.
The trinkets give exploration an optional collection goal alongside the rescue mission and room challenges. The official descriptions establish the room and collectible counts, but do not characterize every room as a separate puzzle or specify how long a typical playthrough takes.

The dates refer to different editions: 2010 is the Steam release date, while 17 November 2017 is the date given for the digital Switch edition in Nintendo’s US store. The developer’s desktop listing describes version 2.4.4; that does not establish a matching version number for Switch or Android.
Has VVVVVV received a recent update?
Terry Cavanagh’s version 2.4.4 update post is dated 22 April 2026. It says the update primarily concerns custom levels and the editor, and describes another attempt to fix blank-screen textures after window or graphics-device changes. The chiptune soundtrack is credited to Magnus Pålsson. Steam describes it as more than half an hour of music; Nintendo also credits Pålsson on its Switch listing.
