It is being designed to play both Xbox console games and PC games, use a custom AMD system-on-chip, and deliver a major improvement in ray tracing. But the part that is not confirmed is just as important: Microsoft has announced neither a consumer release date nor a retail price.
That makes “hideously expensive” a warning, not a fact. The concern is nevertheless more credible than it was when this story first appeared in October 2025, because Xbox has now disclosed more ambitious hardware plans and has raised current console prices in response to higher memory and storage costs.

Xbox has confirmed that Project Helix will:
- Play Xbox console games and PC games.
- Use a custom AMD SoC.
- Be co-designed around future versions of DirectX and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution.
- Target what Xbox calls an order-of-magnitude improvement in ray-tracing performance and capability.
- Support Xbox’s longer-term commitment to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable.
These claims come from Xbox and are not independent performance tests. The official announcement is available at Xbox Wire.
Why this sounds more like a console-PC hybrid
The most significant phrase in Xbox’s announcement is that Project Helix is designed to play both “Xbox console and PC games.” That is broader than a conventional backward-compatibility promise.
It could point to a console-optimised Xbox and Windows gaming environment, wider PC-style game support, or deeper integration between the two platforms. It may also benefit people who use Xbox Play Anywhere, which now covers more than 1,500 games according to Xbox.
However, “PC games” does not automatically mean every Windows game. Microsoft has not confirmed that Project Helix will run Steam, the Epic Games Store, unmodified Windows executables, or every PC game with its existing drivers and anti-cheat systems. Storefront support, certification, controls and compatibility could all impose limits.
Xbox is already moving toward a more unified Windows gaming experience. Its Xbox mode for Windows 11 provides a controller-focused, full-screen interface and can bring together games installed from major PC storefronts in selected markets. That shows the direction of travel, but it does not prove that Project Helix will simply be a standard Windows PC in a console-shaped box. See the Xbox mode announcement for the current PC feature.
Why Project Helix could cost more than a normal console
There are several separate reasons to expect a premium price. None establishes a final figure, but together they make a high launch price plausible.

More capable hardware
A powerful custom AMD chip can benefit from console-scale production and a fixed hardware target. Custom silicon is not automatically expensive forever. But a design intended to offer substantially stronger CPU performance, ray tracing, graphics features and PC-game support could require a more expensive bill of materials than a traditional console.

Memory and storage are already pushing prices up
Xbox announced worldwide console price increases effective August 1, 2026. In the US, 512GB models rose by $100 and 1TB models by $150, while the 2TB model is being discontinued. Xbox attributed the move primarily to higher memory and storage costs.
The company said memory and storage prices had risen by more than 2.5 times and could double again by fall 2027. Those figures are Xbox’s stated cost assessment, not an independently audited industry-wide measurement. Xbox also said consoles are typically sold below manufacturing cost, meaning sustained component inflation creates pressure either to raise prices or reduce the subsidy on hardware.

Microsoft may subsidise hardware less aggressively
In its July 2026 “Resetting Xbox” message, Microsoft described a smaller installed base and higher cost structure, while referring to a severe crisis in the hardware industry. That does not prove how Project Helix will be priced, but it makes it less certain that Microsoft will absorb a large loss on every machine to maximise adoption.

Xbox’s broader AMD partnership, announced in 2025, confirms a long-term plan for future consoles and devices. It does not reveal Project Helix’s CPU architecture, GPU architecture, memory configuration or power consumption. Those details should not be invented from the partnership alone.
What does “premium” actually mean?
Before Project Helix was publicly named, Xbox president Sarah Bond described the next Xbox as a “very premium” product and a “high-end, curated experience.” That supports the idea that Microsoft is targeting more than a basic successor to the Xbox Series S, but “premium” is not a price announcement.
It could refer to performance, construction, storage, software integration, cross-device functionality or a flagship model positioned above a cheaper Xbox device. It could also mean that Microsoft eventually offers more than one next-generation form factor.

The original T3 article, published on October 22, 2025, suggested a price of roughly £699 or $799 and possibly more. That was a media estimate, not an Xbox leak or announcement. The later Project Helix disclosure makes the high-end interpretation more credible, but it still does not validate a specific price. T3’s original report should be read in that dated context.
How expensive could it be?
The following are scenarios, not Microsoft forecasts:
| Price range | Possible positioning | What it would imply |
|---|---|---|
| About $599 | Premium mainstream console | Possible if Microsoft controls costs or subsidises the hardware heavily. |
| $699–$799 | High-end console | Plausible if memory, storage and performance are substantially above Xbox Series X levels. |
| $999 or more | Console-PC replacement | Possible if PC flexibility and flagship performance are central, but currently unsupported by an official price signal. |
| Above $1,000 | Enthusiast hardware | Would put the device directly into gaming-PC territory and could restrict mass-market adoption. |
A price near $799 is therefore conceivable, and $999 cannot be ruled out. Neither figure is confirmed. A smaller drive, multiple models, manufacturing scale, a subscription strategy or a hardware subsidy could all change the final result. Regional prices will also vary because of taxes, exchange rates and local pricing policies.

What games will Project Helix play?
Xbox has confirmed the broad categories: Xbox console games and PC games. It has also said it remains committed to preserving games from four Xbox generations, while Xbox Play Anywhere lets supported purchases work across Xbox and Windows.
That is not a complete compatibility guarantee. Microsoft has not published a title-by-title Project Helix list, and it has not confirmed that every Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or Windows game will work. It has also said nothing definitive about Steam, Epic, disc support or existing accessories.
The safest interpretation is that Project Helix will expand the Xbox platform toward PC gaming without necessarily becoming an unrestricted Windows desktop.
Will there be a cheaper Xbox?
It would make strategic sense for Xbox to offer more than one way into the ecosystem. Possibilities include a lower-cost console, continued Series S availability, a streaming-focused device, handhelds, PCs and cloud gaming. But Microsoft has not confirmed a cheaper Project Helix model.
Xbox has repeatedly described a cross-device strategy spanning consoles, Windows, handhelds, cloud and accessories. Its AMD partnership announcement also framed the next generation as a broader family of devices rather than a single box. That strategy could reduce the need for every customer to buy the flagship console, but it does not make a premium model’s price any less important.
Should you buy an Xbox now or wait?
Buy current Xbox hardware if:
- You want to play current releases immediately.
- You find a good Series X or Series S deal and are satisfied with the present ecosystem.
- You want Game Pass and Xbox’s existing backward-compatible library without waiting for an unannounced product.
- You do not need PC storefronts, upgradeability or next-generation performance.
Remember that Xbox’s August 2026 price changes mean older comparisons with Series X|S pricing may no longer be current.

Wait for Project Helix if:
- You want maximum performance and can tolerate an unknown retail date.
- You are specifically interested in a living-room device that may combine Xbox and PC gaming.
- You are willing to pay more for broader functionality.
- You are not buying for a particular current-generation game or immediate need.
Do not wait solely because a next-generation Xbox exists: there is no confirmed consumer launch date.
Choose a Windows gaming PC if:
- You already own a large Steam or Epic library.
- You want mods, upgradeability, productivity software or unrestricted storefront choice.
- Project Helix eventually approaches gaming-PC pricing.
A PC usually offers more flexibility, but it requires more decisions around components, drivers, upgrades and living-room setup.
Consider cloud gaming or a handheld if:
Xbox Cloud Gaming can avoid an expensive hardware purchase for supported games, but it depends on broadband quality, latency, data allowances and subscription access. It is a poor substitute for local hardware if you need offline play or consistent low latency.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The ROG Xbox Ally X offers a Windows-based handheld route into Xbox and PC gaming. It is relevant to the convergence story, but portability comes with compromises in battery life, performance, heat and ease of use. A roughly $1,000 Windows handheld is not automatically better value than a console; it solves a different problem.
The information still missing
- Project Helix’s final retail name.
- Consumer launch timing.
- MSRP and regional pricing.
- CPU, GPU, memory, storage and power specifications.
- Steam, Epic Games Store and wider Windows compatibility.
- Disc-drive and accessory support.
- The complete backward-compatibility list.
- Whether a cheaper companion device will launch.
Until Microsoft answers those questions, “hideously expensive” should remain a possibility rather than a verdict. The confirmed story is already significant: the next Xbox is real, it is being designed to bridge console and PC gaming, and developer hardware is planned for 2027. The price—and whether the extra flexibility justifies it—remains unknown.
