Ludum Dare 49 used the theme “Unstable.” In an October 25, 2021 GitHub Blog article, Senior Program Manager Lee Reilly described the jam as having “almost 3000 entries” and highlighted 15 games readers could play and explore through their source code. These are selected examples, not a complete list or a verified official ranking.
What the roundup offers
Reilly’s roundup pairs short game descriptions with available play platforms and development technologies, making it useful both for finding a game and for choosing a project whose code to inspect. Reilly called them “just a handful” of the entries that shared source code. The article does not provide exact final entry totals, a complete official ranking, or comparative rating figures.
The official Ludum Dare event index includes event 49, but the index alone does not establish the placement of the games below. Treat “top” here as the GitHub article’s selection, not a claim about their precise ranks.
Games to try, grouped by what you want to play
For puzzles and platforming
- Dogs++ is a puzzle platformer about building an unstable tower of dogs on the player’s head. It is listed for the web and was made with TypeScript.
- Last Fall is a short arcade puzzler featuring colorful plates, bouncy enemies, and open space. It is listed for the web, Windows, and Linux; its source is described as a custom C++ engine.
- Raiders of the Lost Gems is a small puzzle game about collecting gems to earn a trophy. It is listed for the web, Windows, macOS, and Linux, and was made with JavaScript.
- Unstable98.exe is a web puzzle game framed around playing Minesweeper.exe through a series of challenges. Its source is JavaScript.
- Dream Dog Dilemma is an action-puzzle game made for Nintendo NES/Famicom. It is listed for the web and Nintendo/Famicom, and was made with C.
- Unscrambler turns a word puzzle into a chemistry-themed challenge: a scrambled word is represented by shuffled chemical-element symbols. It is listed for the web, Windows, macOS, and Linux, and was made with Unity/C#.
For action, shooting, and arcade play
- Warhead Stroll follows Old Roger walking his dog across town to buy groceries, with one unstable complication: his head is a nuclear bomb. It is listed for the web, Windows, macOS, and Linux, and was made with Godot/GDScript.
- Don’t Drop It! asks the player to move a bomb that is ready to explode to a safer place. It is listed for the web, Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android; the listed stack is Unity/C#.
- Super Misfire centers on a malfunctioning quantum supergun in a dungeon; the goal is to go farther than friends. It is listed for the web, Windows, macOS, and Linux, and was made with Godot/GDScript.
- Brimstone puts you in control of a piece of fire that destroys whatever it touches. It is listed for Windows and Linux, and was made with C++.
- Fractured Edge is a fast six-degrees-of-freedom shooter set in tight corridors, with upgrades and a final boss. It is listed for Windows, uses Unity/C#, and supports oscilloscope rendering.
- Plains in the Sky has you defend sky plains from snakes with a cannon. It is listed for the web and was made with Unity/C#.
For routing and space navigation
- Airobics is an air-traffic-control game about routing planes and avoiding collisions across three locations. It is listed for the web and Windows, and was made with C++.
- Mission Control challenges you to reach the planets in the solar system while managing an unstable signal; relays help stabilize the connection. It is listed for the web and was made with Godot/GDScript.
- Crunda has you jump among planetary systems while avoiding collisions and the risk of getting lost in space. It is listed for Windows and was made with Rust.
Choose by platform or source technology
Platform availability varies by game; the list is not a promise that each title runs everywhere. Most entries include a web option, while Crunda is listed for Windows only, and Brimstone and Fractured Edge are listed for desktop platforms without a web option. Dream Dog Dilemma is the one entry also listed for Nintendo/Famicom; Don’t Drop It! includes Android among its options.

If you are browsing for code rather than a particular genre, the roundup spans Godot/GDScript, Unity/C#, C++, Rust, TypeScript, JavaScript, and C, plus Last Fall’s custom C++ engine. Start with the stack you want to learn, then check the individual game’s source listing and license before reusing code. The Ludum Dare event index notes that games are provided under their respective licenses; the roundup does not establish identical licensing for every entry.

The GitHub article is a curated discovery list. A separate October 23, 2021 video roundup used “top 5” framing for five Jam games and discussed the 48-hour Compo and 72-hour Jam distinction, but that does not assign official ranks to the games featured here. Without an official results table, no specific placement or score should be inferred from the word “top.”
