A Scoundrel in the New World is a graphic novel about Don Pablos, not a new Blacksad story. Written by Alain Ayroles and illustrated by Juanjo Guarnido, it follows the resourceful rogue from Spain to the Americas as he pursues fortune—and the legend of El Dorado. The publishers frame it as a continuation of the world of Francisco de Quevedo’s picaresque novel El Buscón; the US publisher calls it an “unofficial sequel.”

What is A Scoundrel in the New World about?

Its central character is Don Pablos of Segovia, a low-born rogue whose wit and adaptability help him navigate an adventure far from home. Hoping to escape his past and make his fortune, Pablos leaves Spain for the New World in search of El Dorado, the legendary city of gold.

The US publisher describes the tale as a recollection prompted by Pablos’s interrogation by colonial authorities in Cusco. From there, the narrative ranges from Spain across the Andes and along Amazonian waterways. The journey gives the book both a picaresque premise—an irrepressible outsider chasing a better life—and a broad geographical sweep.

Is it connected to Blacksad?

Only through Guarnido’s involvement as illustrator. A Scoundrel in the New World is a separate story about Don Pablos, written by Ayroles; it is not a Blacksad installment. Readers may recognize Guarnido from Blacksad, but the protagonist, literary roots, and adventure here are different.

How does it relate to Quevedo’s El Buscón?

The book draws on Francisco de Quevedo’s picaresque novel, also known as The Swindler in the US publisher’s description. Penguin Random House calls the graphic novel an “unofficial sequel,” while Spanish publisher Norma Editorial describes El Buscón en las Indias as a continuation of La vida del Buscón. Both publishers connect Pablos’s story to the earlier work and its low-born rogue, but those descriptions do not establish a scene-by-scene adaptation or comparison.

Who made it?

  • Writer: Alain Ayroles.
  • Illustrator: Juanjo Guarnido.
  • Character and literary source: Don Pablos, from the world of Quevedo’s picaresque fiction.

What are the English edition details?

Penguin Random House’s US catalog lists an English-language hardcover from Magnetic Press with 160 pages and ISBN 9798894884486. Its currently announced availability date is March 2, 2027; a catalog date is a publisher listing, not a guarantee that retailers will have copies on that day.

Norma Editorial lists the Spanish-language original as El Buscón en las Indias. Check the listing for the specific edition you want: language, format, translation, and any extras should not be assumed to match across editions.
