Spoilers ahead for the A Taste of Freedom quest and its lich encounter. In Divinity: Original Sin 2, A Taste of Freedom takes you from Mordus’ cellar in Driftwood through a hidden skull passage and a pressure-plate puzzle to a captive lich. Find the Glowing Eye in Wrecker’s Cave to open the passage, use Spirit Vision to read the plate clue, and decide whether to free, fight, or help the Desiccated Undead.
Where A Taste of Freedom starts
A Taste of Freedom is a Reaper’s Coast, Act 2 side quest tied to Mordus’ cellar and the wider Mastering the Source storyline. Explore the cellar in Driftwood and look for an ornate skull with a missing eye. The passage behind it leads to the quest’s underground area. The quest sequence and routes described here are documented in Fextralife’s quest guide and the community quest page.

How to open the hidden passage
Glowing Eye route
Retrieve the Glowing Eye gem from a corpse in Wrecker’s Cave, then place it in the skull’s empty socket in Mordus’ cellar. This is the main route described by walkthroughs; see Fextralife’s walkthrough for the route detail.

A community quest guide also reports that lockpicking can open the secret passage. It is an alternate option rather than a step every walkthrough requires; if it does not work for your character or game state, use the Glowing Eye route. The quest page records this option.

How to solve the pressure-plate puzzle
Go down the hatch and examine the floor plates and glyphs. Cast Spirit Vision to reveal the clue that identifies the plates to activate. Then use party members or movable objects to press the indicated plates. The guides describe the mechanic, but their visual grid is not reliably represented in text; follow the pattern shown in your own game rather than trying to infer a plate layout from a transcribed diagram. Fextralife’s quest walkthrough and the community quest page cover the Spirit Vision clue and plate puzzle.
What to do with the Desiccated Undead
Beyond the puzzle, you encounter the Desiccated Undead, a lich whom the quest presents as Mordus’ captive and a victim whose Source has been drained. Speak to it, then interact with the nearby console or panel to tamper with its confinement and free it. What follows depends on your choices; the encounter is not a single fixed outcome. The lich’s situation and the player’s options are described in Fextralife’s quest guide and the community quest page.

Choice guide: fight, spare, or assist
The quest’s central decision is what you do after freeing the lich and how you respond to it later. Guides describe attacking it, sparing it, or helping with its request. Consider what outcome you want before committing:

- Attack it: This ends the immediate threat by confronting the lich directly.
- Spare it: One walkthrough warns that a spared lich may continue preying on victims. Sparing it does not guarantee a harmless outcome. Fextralife’s guide describes this possibility.
- Help it: Another account describes a later exchange involving Source and access to a cache. The exact sequence and result depend on choices and quest state; treat this as a possible branch, not a guaranteed reward. The community quest page describes the later interaction.
There is no universally best branch established by these walkthroughs: stopping the lich’s predation and pursuing a potential cache are different priorities. Exact chronology, experience, and item drops are not consistent enough across the guides to promise a fixed reward. Check your journal and the relevant branch in your game if those details matter.
