A Way Out is worth considering if you have a second player and want a cinematic story built around cooperation. Critics and players rate it favorably overall, especially for its unusual co-op design and emotional moments. Its action and puzzles are comparatively simple, and some reviewers criticize the slow opening or divisive ending. It cannot be played solo.

These numbers support a positive overall verdict, not a claim that every player will enjoy the game. Metacritic critic reviews praise the sustained cooperation and emotional journey; individual counterpoints include criticism of the finale, predictable writing, bland gameplay, and a slow opening. Those are reviewers’ differing judgments, rather than a single agreed flaw.
Is A Way Out worth playing?
It is a good fit for two people who want a focused, story-led co-op game and are happy to share the experience rather than pursue deep combat or complex systems. The central appeal is playing Leo and Vincent’s escape together: scenes are designed to unfold across both players’ perspectives, and cooperation is part of the storytelling rather than an optional add-on. EA describes it as an experience that must be played by two people on its official game page.
#1 Best Overall
- Someone is watching your back A cooperative gameplay experience from the director of Brothers – A Tale of 2 Sons
- Team up with Friends Pass Use Friends Pass when you buy A Way Out and play the entire game online with any of your friends
- Embark on a unique co op adventure Leo and Vincent need to find a way to break out of prison and continue on together beyond the prison walls
The trade-off is straightforward: the cinematic presentation and shared narrative are stronger selling points than mechanical depth. If you are looking for intricate action, elaborate puzzles, or a solo campaign, the game’s design is a poor match. Reviews also differ on whether its pacing and final act pay off the build-up.
Can you play A Way Out solo?
No. A Way Out requires two players; it has no solo mode in which one person controls both characters. You can play together locally on a shared screen or online. Steam also lists Remote Play Together, which lets a friend join a shared session, but both people still need to participate as players.

Do both players need to buy A Way Out?
Not necessarily. EA’s current product page says an online friend can join if they own the game on the same platform or have installed the free Friends Pass trial. EA introduced the invite model at launch in 2018, describing it as a way for a friend to play without buying a second copy. Check the current instructions for your platform before arranging a session, since account and connection requirements apply.
For online play, EA requires a persistent internet connection and an EA account. Steam also notes the EA account requirement on its store listing. EA Help says the game uses peer-to-peer connectivity, both players need stable connections, and progress saves automatically. If a connection drops, a returning player rejoins near the last save, though a short section may need to be replayed.
