If Windows reports that a0002992.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair the FrontPage-related program or installer that requested it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
Public file records describe a0002992.dll as the Microsoft FrontPage Web Extender Library DLL, associated with Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and Microsoft Corporation. The component is related to FrontPage web-authoring and site-management features, including older FrontPage-related server and development components.
The name a0002992.dll also requires caution. File indexes report a relationship with the internal filename FP30WEL.DLL, but public records contain conflicting FrontPage versions and file details. Treat that relationship as reported archive metadata, not proof that every FP30WEL.DLL file is interchangeable with every a0002992.dll file.
This file is not normally part of:
- Windows itself
- DirectX
- .NET
- Visual C++ redistributables
- A modern graphics or audio driver
- A current game runtime
It is also not normally a file you should copy into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

FrontPage 2000 is legacy 32-bit software. On 64-bit Windows, older applications run through Windows’ 32-bit compatibility layer, but their application files should remain in the installation directory expected by the parent program.
Microsoft announced FrontPage 2000 as a web-authoring product in its FrontPage 2000 product announcement. The product is obsolete and is not supported like a current Microsoft application.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| The error appears when FrontPage starts | Damaged or incomplete FrontPage installation | Repair or reinstall FrontPage from original media |
| The error appears during setup | Missing installer source or incomplete Office/FrontPage installation | Run the original setup again and select Repair |
| The error appears in a Server Extensions utility | A FrontPage-related component is missing or installed in the wrong order | Identify that utility and repair its parent product |
| The error started after antivirus activity | The DLL may have been quarantined | Review quarantine and verify the original installation source |
| The error started after moving a program folder | The executable may no longer find its application-local files | Restore the original installation location or reinstall |
| “The specified module could not be found” appears | A dependency of the DLL may be missing | Analyze the requesting executable and repair the parent product |
| The error appears in an unrelated modern application | The DLL may be misidentified, leftover, or suspicious | Identify the requesting executable before restoring anything |
| Windows reports a system-file problem elsewhere | Windows component corruption may also exist | Run DISM, then SFC, as a secondary check |
Fix 1: Identify the program requesting the file
Do this before copying or restoring any file. The error dialog may name the program, but the executable that launched it is more reliable.
Check the error dialog
Read the title bar and message carefully. Look for references to:
- Microsoft FrontPage
- FrontPage Server Extensions
- Visual InterDev
- Office or an old Office setup program
- A web publishing or site-management utility
- A custom shortcut or batch file
If the message appears only when opening a particular shortcut, right-click that shortcut, select Properties, and inspect the Target field. Record the executable path.
Check installed applications
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Office, FrontPage Server Extensions, Visual InterDev, or another legacy Microsoft development product.
- Record the installed product name and installation location.
On Windows 11, you can also open Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
If the error is triggered by an executable you do not recognize, do not assume it belongs to FrontPage merely because the filename matches an online listing. Identify the executable path first.
Check Event Viewer when the dialog is vague
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the failed launch.
- Read the General and Details tabs.
- Note the application name and faulting path.
Event Viewer may not name the missing DLL directly, but it can show which executable attempted to load it.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the original FrontPage component
This is the most likely solution. A FrontPage DLL should normally be restored by repairing the product that owns it, not by downloading the DLL separately.
Try Control Panel repair first
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the FrontPage, Office, Server Extensions, or Visual InterDev entry associated with the error.
- Select Change or Repair.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the same program again.
Some old installers do not offer a button named Repair. In that case, choose the maintenance option that reinstalls missing files or rerun setup and select the equivalent reinstall option.
If Windows asks for installation media, use the legitimate disc, mounted image, or archived installer that belongs to your organization. Do not point setup at an unrelated DLL archive.
Reinstall from original media
If repair is unavailable or fails:
- Uninstall only the damaged FrontPage-related product from Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Mount or insert the original installation media.
- Run
setup.exefrom that media. - Select the original product and install it to its intended location.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program before installing additional FrontPage components.
Avoid deleting random DLLs from the old installation directory before reinstalling. If you need to preserve site files, templates, or configuration data, back them up separately first.

Consider installation order
Older Microsoft development products could share FrontPage libraries. Installing or removing Visual InterDev, FrontPage Server Extensions, and FrontPage components in different orders may leave an incomplete set of files.
If the error began after adding one of those products:
- Repair the product that displays the error.
- Restart Windows.
- Repair the newly installed FrontPage-related component.
- Restart again.
- Test the original application.
- If the problem remains, perform a clean reinstall using the original product media and its documented setup sequence.
Do not assume that installing every old Microsoft web component will help. Extra legacy components can create more version and registration conflicts.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and verify the file
Security software may quarantine a legacy DLL because it is old, unsigned, packed unusually, or associated with obsolete software. A filename alone does not prove that a file is safe.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Review quarantine
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand any detection related to the FrontPage installation.
- Record the original path and detection reason.
If a third-party antivirus program is installed, open its quarantine or history area instead.
Restore the file only when all of these conditions are true:
- The file came from known-good Microsoft installation media.
- The path matches the FrontPage installation directory.
- The security product’s detection has been reviewed.
- The complete installation has been scanned.
- You are prepared to reinstall the parent application if the detection remains suspicious.
If security software identifies the file as malicious, do not override the detection just because an online file record uses the same name. Reinstall the parent product from trusted media and scan the computer fully.
Check provenance and location
A legitimate application DLL should normally be in the folder used by the FrontPage-related program or its installer. A copy found in a temporary download folder, a user profile, or a system directory deserves additional scrutiny.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can inspect a file by right-clicking it, selecting Properties, and reviewing:
- General for its location and size
- Details for description and product information
- Digital Signatures, if present
These fields are useful clues, not a complete authenticity guarantee. The safest comparison is with the same file on trusted original installation media.
Fix 4: Do not copy the DLL to System32
Copying a0002992.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 is not a general repair method. It can introduce the wrong version, cause an application to load an unintended copy, and obscure which installation is actually broken.
On 64-bit Windows:
C:WindowsSystem32is primarily used for 64-bit system components.C:WindowsSysWOW64contains many 32-bit Windows components.- Neither folder is a general storage location for application DLLs.
The reported FrontPage component is associated with legacy 32-bit software. That does not mean it belongs in SysWOW64. Restore it to the application or installer directory that expects it.
If you already copied a downloaded DLL into a Windows folder, remove it only after confirming that no legitimate Windows component depends on it. Then repair or reinstall the parent application. If you are unsure which copy Windows is loading, use the application path and Event Viewer evidence rather than deleting files indiscriminately.
Fix 5: Do not blindly run regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point, typically self-registering ActiveX or OLE components. It is not a universal DLL installation command.
Do not assume this is a valid fix:
regsvr32 a0002992.dll
If the file is not self-registering, Windows may report that DllRegisterServer was not found. That result does not mean the DLL is missing or that another copy should be downloaded.
Use registration only when the original FrontPage installer or a documented repair procedure specifically requires it. A historical FrontPage registration instruction for one component does not establish that a0002992.dll or every file identified as FP30WEL.DLL should be registered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix 6: Run DISM and SFC for separate Windows corruption
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They do not normally recreate a missing third-party FrontPage DLL, so treat these commands as a secondary check rather than the primary repair.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Keep the window open even if progress appears to pause.
Run SFC after DISM
When DISM finishes, enter:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the FrontPage-related application again.
Microsoft documents this sequence in its System File Checker and DISM guidance.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files but a0002992.dll is still missing, that result is expected for an application DLL. Return to the FrontPage repair or reinstall step.
Repeating SFC without recording what changed is not a substitute for repairing the parent application. If you prefer help identifying corrupted Windows components and handling the manual repair process, Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing what it finds; repair is performed by the full version, and reinstalling FrontPage remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 7: Update Windows, but do not expect a FrontPage download
Windows Update can repair current operating-system components and improve compatibility, but it is not a source for a current FrontPage 2000 redistributable.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart if requested.
- Test the application again.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET redistributables solely because a0002992.dll is missing. Those packages are not an evidence-based replacement for this FrontPage component.
Fix 8: Check compatibility on Windows 10 or Windows 11
FrontPage 2000 predates modern Windows security and application frameworks. Windows 10 or Windows 11 may run some portions of the program, but compatibility is not guaranteed.
Try the built-in compatibility troubleshooter:
- Right-click the FrontPage executable or shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run compatibility troubleshooter.
- Apply the recommended settings.
- Test the program.
- If it works, return to the Compatibility tab and select Change settings for all users if the program must work for other accounts.
Do not use compatibility settings to bypass antivirus warnings or run an untrusted installer. Compatibility mode can help an old executable start, but it cannot supply a missing library or correct a damaged installation.
For an important legacy workflow, use original media in an isolated legacy virtual machine rather than exposing obsolete FrontPage software directly to the internet. Keep the virtual machine separated from sensitive files and modern production systems.
Microsoft’s lifecycle information confirms that later FrontPage releases are no longer supported; see the Microsoft Office FrontPage lifecycle page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Investigate a missing dependency
A message such as “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that a0002992.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named DLL but failed to load one of its dependencies.
If reinstalling the parent product does not help:
- Confirm the exact executable that produces the error.
- Check whether
a0002992.dllexists in the expected application directory. - Review Event Viewer for an application error at the same time.
- Use a reputable dependency-analysis utility from a trusted source.
- Look for a missing module, architecture mismatch, or unavailable runtime.
- Repair the parent product based on that finding.
Do not replace every missing dependency with a file downloaded from the internet. A dependency may be missing because the application is the wrong architecture, because an installation path is broken, or because the application was never designed for the current version of Windows.

Fix 10: Update or reinstall a related driver only when evidence points there
A graphics, storage, chipset, or security driver is not the normal owner of a0002992.dll. Use Device Manager only if the same computer also shows a separate hardware or driver problem.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the separate problem.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Review the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean reinstall, select Uninstall device, restart Windows, and then install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or the computer manufacturer. Do not remove a working device merely to address this FrontPage DLL error.
If tracking versions across several devices is the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing which drivers it identifies; installation is performed by the full version, and it is not a replacement for repairing the FrontPage installation.
If reinstalling FrontPage does not help
Work through this escalation order:
- Verify that the same executable still produces the error.
- Confirm that the installation media matches the installed FrontPage or Office product.
- Check antivirus history again after reinstalling.
- Look for a second FrontPage-related installation that may be launching a different executable.
- Check whether the program was moved from its original folder.
- Analyze dependencies if the named DLL exists but still will not load.
- Run DISM followed by SFC for unrelated Windows corruption.
- Try System Restore if the failure began immediately after a recent software change and a restore point is available.
- Move the legacy workflow to an isolated virtual machine if the application cannot run safely or reliably on the host operating system.
If the error appears in a modern, unrelated application, stop treating the filename as proof of ownership. Identify the executable, scan the system, and investigate why that application is requesting a FrontPage-era library.

Is a0002992.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is reported as a Microsoft FrontPage Web Extender Library component associated with FrontPage 2000. It should not normally be placed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Is a0002992.dll the original Microsoft filename?
Public file records associate it with FP30WEL.DLL, but those records are archive metadata and contain conflicting FrontPage file details. Do not assume that every file with either name is identical.
Should I download the DLL from a DLL website?
No. Random DLL downloads may contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the rest of the installation. They also leave the damaged parent application unrepaired.
Use original Microsoft installation media, an existing trusted backup, or the repair function for the installed FrontPage-related product.

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, while this is an application DLL. Run DISM and SFC only as secondary Windows-integrity checks.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not as a first response to this error. There is no evidence that those redistributables are the correct source of the FrontPage Web Extender component.
Is the file safe because it has a Microsoft description?
No. A filename and description can be copied or altered. Verify the file’s location and origin, compare it with trusted installation media, and scan the complete installation.
Will FrontPage 2000 run on Windows 11?
Compatibility is not guaranteed. Some legacy installations may start with compatibility settings, while others require an isolated older environment. FrontPage is obsolete and should not be treated as supported modern software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat if the error says the DLL is corrupted?
Repair or reinstall the FrontPage-related product from trusted media. If antivirus activity preceded the error, inspect quarantine. If the file exists but cannot load, investigate dependencies instead of replacing it with a random copy.
Does regsvr32 fix this error?
Not generally. Use regsvr32 only when the original installer or documented vendor instructions specifically require registration for that component. It is not a general DLL repair command. Microsoft explains its scope and common errors in its regsvr32 troubleshooting documentation.
