npqtplugin3.dll is a legacy Apple QuickTime plug-in file, not a Windows system DLL. When Windows reports that npqtplugin3.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, identify the program requesting it before replacing anything.
Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before applying a fix, record:
- The requesting program: Read the error window title or the path shown in the message.
- When it appears: Does it happen during Windows startup, when opening an old application, or when launching a particular game?
- The file path: If a copy of
npqtplugin3.dllexists, note whether it is under a QuickTime or application folder. - Windows architecture: Open Settings > System > About and check System type. A 64-bit version of Windows can still run a 32-bit legacy application.
- Security history: Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file.
The application named in the error is more important than the DLL filename. It identifies which installation must be repaired or removed.
What npqtplugin3.dll does
npqtplugin3.dll belongs to Apple QuickTime for Windows and its old NPAPI web plug-in. Its embedded description is:
The QuickTime Plugin allows you to view a wide variety of multimedia content in Web pages.

Historical plug-in inventories identify the file in QuickTime Plug-in 6.5.1 and several later QuickTime releases, including versions in the 7.6 and 7.7 series. It is therefore not correct to assume that every copy came from QuickTime 6.5 alone.
This is a third-party application file. It is not supplied by Windows and does not belong to:
- Microsoft Visual C++
- DirectX
- .NET
- Windows system components
- A graphics, audio, or motherboard driver
The usual location was a QuickTime plug-in directory, commonly beneath:
C:Program FilesQuickTimePlugins
The exact path varies by installation and by the application that used QuickTime. Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix 1: Repair the application named in the error
This is the safest first fix because the parent application may include the correct QuickTime component and its other dependencies.
Use the installed repair option
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the program that produces the error.
- Select its three-dot menu, then choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program again.
If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset, if offered. Resetting can remove application settings or local data, so use it only after Repair fails.
Some older programs provide their own repair entry:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Change, Repair, or Modify, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
If the program has a launcher with Verify files, Repair installation, or a similar command, use that before installing QuickTime globally. This can restore the matching 32-bit files when the requesting program is 32-bit.
Reinstall from the original vendor
If Repair is unavailable:
- Back up the application’s settings or saved data if necessary.
- Uninstall the affected application from Settings > Apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the application’s original vendor.
- Install it using Run as administrator.
- Restart again and test the program.
Use the same release family that created the error when a modern replacement is unavailable. Do not mix an old application with a random copy of npqtplugin3.dll.
If the application no longer has a supported installer, the better outcome is usually to replace it with a current program rather than rebuilding an obsolete browser plug-in environment.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove a QuickTime component after identifying the old installation as unsafe or unwanted. A quarantine event does not automatically prove that the file was malware, but it also should not be ignored.
Review Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
npqtplugin3.dll, QuickTime, or the affected application. - Open the event and record the detected path and action.
Restore the file only when all of the following are true:
- It came from the original application’s trusted installer.
- The path is inside the expected QuickTime or application directory.
- The security product identifies the event as a demonstrable false positive.
- You have scanned the complete installation and system.
Do not restore a file downloaded from a DLL repository. If the quarantine record is uncertain, leave the file removed and reinstall the parent application from its official source.
After reinstalling, run Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan. If the file appears outside an expected application directory or keeps returning after removal, treat it as a possible imposter and perform a deeper scan.
Fix 3: Remove obsolete QuickTime when the application no longer needs it
QuickTime 7 for Windows is discontinued and unsupported. Current browsers normally do not use its old NPAPI plug-in, so reinstalling QuickTime merely to make a modern browser play media is not an appropriate fix.

If the error began after removing QuickTime, first determine whether an old application still depends on it. If nothing you use requires QuickTime, remove the remaining installation:

- Restart Windows.
Apple’s removal procedure removes the legacy web plug-in. Afterward, uninstall or update the application that still tries to load it. Reinstalling QuickTime can make sense only in a controlled, isolated environment where a specific legacy program absolutely requires it, and even then the archived installer is unsupported on current Windows versions.
If the message appears every time Windows starts after QuickTime has been removed, the remaining problem may be a stale reference rather than a missing file.
Fix 4: Remove a stale startup reference
A startup shortcut, scheduled task, or old helper may still launch the deleted application.
Check Startup apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for the old QuickTime-dependent program.
- Right-click it and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
Disabling the entry stops the startup error but does not remove the application. If the entry clearly belongs to obsolete software, uninstall that software afterward.
Check the Startup folders
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
shell:startup
- Press Enter.
- Remove only shortcuts that clearly point to the obsolete application.
Repeat with:
shell:common startup
Do not delete unknown items merely because their names look unfamiliar.
Check Task Scheduler
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Review tasks that launch the affected program.
- Select a task and inspect its Actions tab.
- Disable the task only when its executable path clearly belongs to the obsolete application.
If the error disappears after disabling the task, uninstall or update the parent program rather than restoring npqtplugin3.dll.
Fix 5: Resolve a damaged or incompatible installation
A “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” message does not necessarily mean malware. It can indicate that the file is corrupt, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or missing one of its own dependencies.
Reinstall the complete parent application instead of replacing one DLL:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Uninstall the affected program.
- Restart Windows.
- Delete only leftover folders that clearly belong to that program, after backing up settings.
- Download a fresh installer from the original vendor.
- Install the application again.
- Test it before adding any manually copied files.
A 64-bit Windows installation can run a 32-bit program, but that program needs compatible 32-bit dependencies. Installing an arbitrary 64-bit DLL will not solve a 32-bit application error. The reverse is also true.
A missing npqtplugin3.dll message can sometimes mean that another dependency required by the plug-in is missing. That is another reason manual copying is unreliable.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
npqtplugin3.dll is not a protected Windows file, so System File Checker normally will not restore it. Use DISM and SFC only when you also see broader Windows problems, such as damaged system applications, failed updates, or multiple unrelated system-file errors.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run System File Checker:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Microsoft documents this DISM-then-SFC sequence for repairing Windows system files. If the application still reports npqtplugin3.dll, repair or reinstall the application itself.

Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan that shows system issues before its full version performs repairs, but it is not required and reinstalling the program that owns this file remains the definitive fix.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this DLL
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. The QuickTime plug-in is not normally a COM or ActiveX component that needs this registration.
This command is therefore not a standard fix:
regsvr32 npqtplugin3.dll
It may produce an error saying that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove the file is corrupt. It usually means the command does not apply to this type of DLL.

Fix 8: Check drivers only when the error identifies a driver
npqtplugin3.dll is not a driver, so Device Manager is not a primary repair location. Do not update a graphics, audio, or chipset driver simply because the missing file appears during multimedia playback.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If the error also identifies a hardware driver:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a more direct repair, download the driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer rather than forcing a generic package. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention before its full version installs them, but a driver update will not replace this QuickTime plug-in or fix an obsolete parent application by itself.
Why standalone DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download npqtplugin3.dll from a random DLL website or copy an unknown file into System32 or SysWOW64. That approach can introduce:
- Malware or a tampered binary
- The wrong QuickTime release
- The wrong architecture
- A mismatched dependency set
- DLL search-order conflicts
- A file that does not match the requesting application’s directory
Windows often searches the application’s own directory before system locations. Placing a replacement in a global Windows folder can make the wrong component load and can create a separate security problem.
The safe sources are:
- The original application’s official installer or repair feature.
- The application’s official support or download page.
- Apple’s archived QuickTime installer only when a specific isolated legacy application requires it, with the understanding that QuickTime for Windows is unsupported.
Manual copying is defensible only in a controlled legacy environment when the exact file is recovered from the same trusted installer and the parent application explicitly requires it. It is not a normal repair for current Windows users.
When the error still appears
If none of the steps works, collect these details before making further changes:
- The exact error text
- The program or executable named in the message
- The full path of the executable
- The path of any existing
npqtplugin3.dll - Your Windows version and system type
- Whether the error occurs at startup or only when launching an app
- Antivirus quarantine details
- Whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit
This information distinguishes a missing QuickTime file from a missing dependency, incompatible architecture, stale startup entry, or imposter DLL.
FAQ
Is npqtplugin3.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Apple QuickTime plug-in DLL and should not normally be stored in System32 or SysWOW64.
Does it come only from QuickTime Plug-in 6.5?
No. Historical inventories identify it in QuickTime 6.5.1 and several later QuickTime releases.
Do modern browsers need it?
Normally no. Current browsers use modern web standards and generally cannot use the old QuickTime NPAPI plug-in.
Should I reinstall QuickTime?
Only if a specific trusted legacy application still requires it. Otherwise, remove QuickTime and update or replace the dependent application.
Can SFC restore npqtplugin3.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while this is a third-party Apple component.
What does “not designed to run on Windows” mean?
It can mean the file is corrupt, incompatible, the wrong architecture, or missing a dependency. It is not automatically proof of malware.
Why does the error appear during startup?
A startup shortcut, scheduled task, or old application may still reference QuickTime after the program or plug-in was removed. Disable or uninstall that parent software instead of copying the DLL.
Is regsvr32 npqtplugin3.dll required?
Normally no. This browser plug-in is not generally registered like a COM or ActiveX server.
