Errors this guide addresses
You may see one of these messages when starting an old application or service:
- “A0002993.dll not found.”
- “The file A0002993.dll is missing.”
- “Cannot find A0002993.dll.”
- “This application failed to start because A0002993.dll was not found.”
- “The program can’t start because fp4awebs.dll is missing.”
- “Error loading fp4awebs.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “fp4awebs.dll file could not be loaded.”
The 60-second answer
a0002993.dll is probably a database or index alias for the real Microsoft file fp4awebs.dll. Its description is Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions for O’Reilly Website, and it belongs to the historical Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 software family.

It is not a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system DLL. Do not download a replacement and copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. First find the program requesting it. If that program is still needed, repair or reinstall its original FrontPage, Office, or FrontPage Server Extensions installation from legitimate installation media. If the program has already been removed, delete the stale startup or service reference instead.

What a0002993.dll belongs to
The name shown in a search result or error database is not necessarily the filename used by the original installer. In this case, the useful identity is:
| Item | Identification |
|---|---|
| Search or error label | a0002993.dll |
| Probable installed filename | fp4awebs.dll |
| Component | Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions for O’Reilly Website |
| Product family | Microsoft FrontPage 2000 and related FPSE components |
| Publisher | Microsoft Corporation |
| Architecture | Historical Win32/x86 software |
| Current Windows component | No evidence that it is a protected Windows system DLL |
The “O’Reilly Website” wording refers to an old web-authoring or publishing integration, not to a modern Windows runtime. It may be associated with FrontPage 2000, Office 2000 installations that included FrontPage, old IIS administration, or an O’Reilly WebSite installation.
Microsoft’s historical security material identifies FrontPage Server Extensions 2000 as an Office and IIS-era component. It does not establish a0002993.dll as an official Microsoft filename. Treat that label as an alias unless your own error dialog, installer manifest, or application documentation identifies it differently.
First find the program that requests the DLL
Repairing Windows before identifying the requester often wastes time. A missing FrontPage component can be caused by an application that is still installed, but it can also be caused by an abandoned startup entry or service left behind after an uninstall.
Check the error window
Read the title bar and the text around the DLL error. Note the executable name if it appears. A message from an old FrontPage executable, Office component, IIS administration tool, or web-publishing utility points toward a product repair.
If the message appears immediately after signing in, it may come from a startup entry rather than an application you intentionally opened.
Check startup applications
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Sort by Status or inspect entries with an unfamiliar publisher.
- Right-click a suspicious entry and choose Open file location.
- Record the executable path before disabling anything.
- Right-click the entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows and check whether the error returns.
Disabling a startup entry is reversible. Do not delete files merely because their names look old.
Check Windows services
- Press Win + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Look for an old web-publishing, FrontPage, IIS, or application-specific service.
- Double-click the service and note Path to executable.
- Do not start or stop an unfamiliar service until you know which product owns it.
If the executable path points to a product that is no longer installed, the correct repair may be removing the orphaned service or reinstalling and then cleanly uninstalling the parent application.
Check Event Viewer
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs, then Application.
- Select Filter Current Log.
- Filter for Error and Warning events around the time the message appears.
- Look for the application name, faulting executable, or service name.
The requesting executable matters more than the alias. A missing DLL in an old application directory requires an application repair. A stale startup reference requires cleanup. A Windows system-file scan is not a substitute for either one.

Fix 1: Repair FrontPage or Office from the original media
This is the safest and most likely fix when the requesting program is FrontPage 2000, Office 2000 Premium, or an FPSE administration component that is still required.
Microsoft’s historical repair procedure uses the original FrontPage or Office setup program and its maintenance mode. Microsoft’s archived FrontPage repair guidance describes this process.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Insert the original FrontPage 2000 CD or mount a legitimate installation image.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to the media drive.
- Right-click
setup.exeand choose Run as administrator. - Allow the installer to detect the existing installation.
- Select Repair or the equivalent maintenance option.
- Keep the original installation features selected unless you know the missing component was intentionally excluded.
- Complete setup and restart Windows.
- Launch the original application again.
If FrontPage came with Office 2000
- Insert the original Office installation media.
- Run
setup.exeas administrator. - Choose Repair Office when the maintenance options appear.
- Select the option that repairs the existing installation while preserving user settings.
- Complete the repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the program that produced the error.
If setup reports that the source files cannot be found, provide the original CD or the same installation source used previously. Do not point the installer at a random DLL file.
How to tell whether this worked
The original program should open without the missing-file message, and the repaired component should be present in the product’s installation directory or the historical Microsoft Shared Web Server Extensions directory. Exact subdirectories vary by edition and component.
Do not assume that a successful installation makes FrontPage fully compatible with Windows 10 or Windows 11. The software is obsolete, and old web-publishing or IIS functions may still fail for separate compatibility or security reasons.
Fix 2: Reinstall the matching FrontPage Server Extensions component
If the requester is an old IIS or FrontPage publishing tool, the missing file may belong to a separate FrontPage Server Extensions installation rather than the desktop FrontPage program.
Recommended Free Tools
Use the package intended for the original product and operating-system combination. Do not substitute a later FrontPage 2002 package or an unrelated IIS extension merely because the names look similar. Microsoft’s FrontPage Server Extensions installation documentation explains that the packages and installation paths differ by architecture and IIS generation.
- Identify the IIS or publishing product that produced the error.
- Confirm that the old server-extension feature is still required.
- Obtain the installation media or archived Microsoft installation source for that exact product.
- Run its setup program as administrator.
- Choose repair or reinstall if offered.
- Restart the related service or restart Windows.
- Test the administration tool or publishing workflow.
If you are maintaining a server that no longer needs FrontPage Server Extensions, removal is safer than restoring the component. These extensions are obsolete and have a long security history. Microsoft’s MS03-051 bulletin documents the historical security context.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantine removed it
A security product may have isolated a legacy executable or DLL. Do not restore a quarantined file solely because its name matches the error.

- Review detections from the time the error began.
- Expand a relevant detection and record the original path and detection reason.
- Restore the file only if you can verify that it came from the original Microsoft installation and the alert is demonstrably a false positive.
- Prefer repairing or reinstalling the original product instead of restoring an isolated DLL.
- Run a full scan after the product is repaired.
A DLL with the expected name can still be modified or replaced. Check its location, publisher information, and any available Digital Signatures tab in Properties. A missing signature alone does not prove malware, but an unexpected location or inconsistent product information is a reason not to restore it.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix 4: Remove a stale startup entry or service
If FrontPage, Office 2000, the old web-publishing utility, and the related server extensions are no longer used, restoring the DLL is unnecessary.
Use the startup and service checks above to identify the requester. Then:
- Uninstall the parent application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps if it is listed.
- If it is an older Control Panel installation, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the obsolete application and choose Uninstall or Change.
- Restart Windows.
- Recheck Task Manager startup entries and Services.
- Disable or remove only the remaining entry that clearly belongs to the uninstalled product.
If a service remains after the normal uninstall, do not delete registry entries at random. Record its exact service name and executable path, then use the product’s official removal procedure or have an administrator clean up the orphaned service.
Fix 5: Check dependencies when the message says “specified module could not be found”
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL or by the requesting executable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the following:
- Confirm the original application is installed.
- Confirm the DLL is in the application’s expected directory or the product’s historical shared-extension directory.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined a related file.
- Repair the parent application rather than copying individual files.
- Check Event Viewer for the executable and service name.
- Test the application under the account and compatibility environment it originally used.
Do not move the DLL between folders to experiment. DLL search paths are product-specific, and placing an old library in a global directory can cause unrelated applications to load the wrong file.
Fix 6: Use DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
fp4awebs.dll is not established as a current protected Windows file, so DISM and System File Checker normally will not recreate it. They are appropriate when Windows itself is showing other corruption symptoms, including damaged built-in components or repeated system-file errors.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows files against that store. If both complete successfully but the FrontPage error remains, return to repairing the original application or removing its stale launcher.
If you are repeatedly hunting through Windows components and cannot determine what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies; its full version performs the repair. It is optional, and reinstalling the original FrontPage or Office component remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.

Fix 7: Do not treat this as a driver problem
A DLL error can appear alongside a wider hardware or application failure, but fp4awebs.dll is a legacy FrontPage component, not a graphics, audio, chipset, or network driver file. Device Manager will not normally restore it.

Check drivers only when you also have hardware symptoms:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click a device with a warning icon.
- Choose Properties and inspect the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
- Restart and retest the hardware separately from the FrontPage error.
If several devices show warnings and you are spending time hunting versions manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers it identifies; driver installation through its full version is optional. It will not replace the need to repair the original FrontPage installation when that is the actual cause.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 8: Account for 32-bit software on 64-bit Windows
FrontPage 2000 and the associated component are historical Win32/x86 software. A 32-bit legacy application can require its 32-bit dependency even when it runs on 64-bit Windows.
Do not infer authenticity from a download page offering a “64-bit” version. A later 64-bit FrontPage Server Extensions package does not prove that fp4awebs.dll itself had a 64-bit build.
Also avoid manually copying the file into either of these locations:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Those directories do not mean “put every DLL here.” System32 is the Windows system directory even on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. The original application installer should determine where its files belong.
Why regsvr32 usually does not help
regsvr32 registers a DLL that exposes the appropriate registration entry point, normally DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not run:
regsvr32 a0002993.dll
merely because a generic repair page recommends it. The alias may not be the installed filename, and the component may not expose a registration entry point. You may receive an entry-point error without fixing the original problem.
Use registration only when the original product’s installation instructions explicitly require it and identify the correct file and path.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Downloading a0002993.dll or fp4awebs.dll from an unverified DLL download sites site can provide:

- Malware disguised as a familiar filename
- The wrong product version
- The wrong architecture
- A modified or unsigned file
- A file that still lacks its required dependencies
- A file placed in the wrong directory
It also hides the real cause, such as a damaged FrontPage installation, antivirus quarantine, stale startup entry, or unsupported legacy environment. The safe sources are the original Microsoft FrontPage or Office installation media and a matching Microsoft installation package for the required historical FrontPage Server Extensions.
If the error remains after repair
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the exact executable that requests the file.
- Confirm whether that executable is 32-bit legacy software.
- Verify that the original installation completed without source-file errors.
- Check the application directory and historical shared-extension path.
- Review antivirus quarantine and protection history.
- Check Event Viewer for a missing dependency.
- Remove any abandoned startup or service entry if the application is no longer needed.
- Run a trusted malware scan if the file was modified or appeared in an unexpected location.
- Avoid repeatedly running SFC when the error is clearly limited to FrontPage.
If the software is essential but cannot run reliably on Windows 10 or Windows 11, use an isolated Windows XP or Windows 2000 virtual machine only where your organization can secure, restrict, and back up that environment. Do not expose an obsolete IIS or FrontPage server directly to an untrusted network.
FAQ
Is a0002993.dll an official Microsoft filename?
It has not been independently established as the canonical Microsoft filename. It is best treated as an alias associated with fp4awebs.dll, whose description is Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions for O’Reilly Website.
What is the real filename?
The probable canonical filename is fp4awebs.dll. Confirm it against the original installer or the executable’s own error message rather than trusting a download listing.
Does Windows 11 include this DLL?
There is no evidence that current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations include it as a protected system file. It belongs to obsolete FrontPage-era software.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I copy the DLL into System32?
No. Repair the application that owns it, or remove the stale application reference if the software is no longer needed.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually not. Registration applies only when the component supports the required registration entry point and the original product instructions call for it.
Will SFC fix the error?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this DLL belongs to a historical Microsoft application component. Run DISM and SFC when Windows has broader corruption symptoms, not as a replacement for FrontPage repair.
Could this be an old game or a modern runtime problem?
The identified component points to FrontPage Server Extensions and old web-publishing software, not Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a current Windows runtime. Identify the requesting executable before assuming otherwise.
What if I no longer use FrontPage?
Uninstall the obsolete product and remove its remaining startup or service reference. Restoring the DLL is unnecessary when no supported application still depends on it.
