Online file databases may describe the file as part of Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) Operating System, with Microsoft listed as the developer. That label is product metadata. It does not mean brothui.dll is a standalone Windows runtime or that every current Windows installation should contain it.
The available evidence connects the DLL to the Windows printing stack, especially legacy Brother printer packages. Its exact internal function and the complete list of Brother models that used it are not reliably documented in current Microsoft or Brother material.

A Windows 2000 defect specifically involved an access violation while viewing Brother printer properties. Microsoft corrected that historical issue in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2. That information helps identify the file’s age and purpose, but it does not mean a Windows 11 or Windows 10 computer should install an old Windows 2000 file.

These are reported error examples, not one universal Windows message. The wording depends on the application, printer utility, driver generation, and Windows version.

- Open a Brother printer’s properties
- Print from an application
- Open an old Brother status monitor or configuration utility
- Add the printer after removing its software
- Upgrade or replace a printer driver
- Resume using a printer after antivirus software quarantined a driver file
- Use an old Brother package on a newer Windows release
If the message names a printer, spooler process, Brother utility, or a path containing spooldrivers or DriverStore, treat the issue as a printer-driver problem first.
Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the Brother printer package
This is the most likely fix for brothui.dll errors.
Before starting, identify the printer model and the Windows edition. On Windows 11 or Windows 10, press Windows key + R, type winver, and press Enter. To check whether Windows is 64-bit, open Settings > System > About and inspect System type.
Do not mix a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit driver package, or copy a file from a different Brother model. The installer must match the printer, Windows version, and system architecture.
1. Disconnect the printer
Turn off the printer or disconnect its USB cable. If it is a network printer, leave it disconnected from Windows by removing the printer entry later in this procedure.
This prevents Windows from immediately reusing the damaged driver while you remove the old package.
2. Remove the printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the affected Brother printer.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Choose the Brother printer.
- Select Remove device.
- Confirm the removal.
If Windows reports that the printer is in use, close print programs and clear any pending jobs first. Open the printer queue, cancel the jobs, and retry the removal.
3. Remove Brother software
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings > Apps > Apps & features on Windows 10.

Uninstall entries that clearly belong to the affected Brother printer, such as its printer software, status monitor, configuration utility, or full driver package. You can also use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
Do not remove unrelated Brother software for another device unless you have confirmed that it uses the same printer driver.
4. Restart Windows
Restart after uninstalling the printer and its software. A restart releases files held by the print spooler and clears driver components that cannot be removed while Windows is running.
5. Download the correct package
Use Brother’s official support site and search for the exact printer model. Select the correct Windows version and architecture, then download the Full Driver & Software Package, Printer Driver, or the equivalent current package offered for that model.
If Brother no longer provides a package compatible with your Windows version, use the latest supported package, Windows’ built-in printer driver, or a newer printer. Do not substitute a standalone brothui.dll.
6. Install as an administrator
Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator. Follow the installer’s connection instructions. Reconnect the USB cable or add the network printer only when the installer requests it.
If Windows displays an architecture warning, stop. Recheck Settings > System > About and download the matching 32-bit or 64-bit package. Do not force the installation with a DLL copied from another system.

7. Test the result
Print a Windows test page:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Brother printer.
- Open Printer properties.
- Select Print Test Page.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, choose Manage, and then open Print a test page.
The repair worked if the printer properties open without the DLL error and the test page prints. If the same message returns, continue with the driver cleanup and Windows integrity checks below.
Fix 2: Remove a stale driver from Print server properties
Removing the printer does not always remove its driver. A stale package can remain registered with the Windows print spooler and continue calling an old brothui.dll.
Only remove a driver after confirming that no other installed printer uses it.

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
control printers. - Press Enter.
- Select any printer once so that printer-management options appear.
- Select Print server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Brother driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the correct Brother package.
If the driver is in use, Windows may refuse to remove it. Do not delete random files from C:WindowsSystem32spooldrivers. Remove the printer using Windows’ printer-management tools first.
If several Brother printers are installed, record their model names and driver names before removing anything. Deleting a shared driver can affect another working printer.
Fix 3: Check Windows components with DISM and SFC
A missing printer DLL is usually repaired by reinstalling the printer package, but Windows component corruption can prevent drivers from installing correctly. Microsoft’s DISM tool repairs the Windows component store, and System File Checker checks protected Windows files.
Run DISM
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows if DISM reports that repairs were completed.
The scan can take time and may appear to pause. Do not close the window while it is working.

Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open Terminal (Admin) again.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Brother printer package if the error remains.
A message saying that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them indicates that SFC changed system files. A message saying that it found no integrity violations means SFC did not find a protected Windows-file problem. Neither result replaces reinstalling a damaged third-party printer package.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether the driver package itself is damaged usually does not solve a printer-specific error. Fix 4: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software may remove a printer component if it is damaged, unexpectedly modified, or incorrectly detected. A missing DLL can therefore be the result of quarantine rather than the original cause.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any entry associated with the Brother printer software.
- Check the file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only when all of the following are true:

- The path is a normal printer-driver location.
- The package was downloaded from an official source.
- The file’s digital signature is valid.
- A current security scan does not identify the package as malicious.
If you are unsure, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, remove the old printer package, and reinstall it from Brother. Do not restore a DLL merely because doing so makes the error disappear. Windows Security’s Protection History provides the relevant quarantine details.
Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If the error started immediately after a driver update, software removal, or Windows change, System Restore may return the driver configuration to an earlier working state.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the printer stopped working.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files, but it can remove programs, drivers, and system settings installed after the selected restore point. After Windows starts, test the printer before installing newer software. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
Fix 6: Test with a newer or generic printer driver
Some old Brother packages were designed for Windows versions that are no longer supported. A current Windows installation may reject the package, install it incompletely, or load only part of its old configuration utility.

If reinstalling the Brother package fails:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search.
- If the printer is not found, select Add manually.
- Choose the appropriate USB, network, or manual installation option.
- Allow Windows to select an inbox driver when one is available.
- Print a test page.
You can also inspect the driver in Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on how the device appears.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Record the provider, date, and version.
- Use Update Driver only with a verified package or Windows Update source.
- If the device is no longer used, select Uninstall device, then restart and reinstall it properly.
Device Manager is useful for identifying the driver, but it may not remove every Brother utility or spooler reference. Use it alongside the printer removal steps, not as a replacement for them.

If the computer really runs Windows 2000, the documented Brother printer-property problem is different from a modern Windows 11 or Windows 10 missing-DLL error. Microsoft corrected the access-violation issue in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
For a historically maintained Windows 2000 system, install the applicable service pack and the printer driver intended for that system. Do not copy a Vista-era or current Windows DLL into the Windows 2000 installation.
For current Windows, this historical fix is not a substitute for reinstalling the model-specific printer package.

Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download pages can provide malware, an incorrect build, the wrong architecture, or a file that does not match the printer driver. Copying the file may also leave the actual package, registry entries, spooler configuration, and printer utilities broken.
The safe recovery is the complete official printer-driver package.
Do not copy it into System32
brothui.dll is not established as a general Windows runtime. If the error names a path under DriverStore or a printer-driver directory, copy-pasting the file into System32 does not recreate the package relationship.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose the required registration entry points. There is no reliable evidence that brothui.dll should be manually registered.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a standard fix:
regsvr32 brothui.dll
regsvr32 /u brothui.dll
They may produce another error or create the impression that the driver is repaired when it is not. Microsoft documents regsvr32 for registerable DLL components, not as a universal missing-file repair command.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
Installing Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET is unlikely to restore a Brother printer-driver component. Use those packages only when a separate application identifies them as its actual dependency.

If the error remains
Check Event Viewer for the failing component:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Also inspect Windows Logs > System.
- Look for entries created when the printer error occurred.
- Record the application, driver name, faulting module, and path.
If the path points to a Brother printer package, repeat the driver cleanup and install the correct package. If it points outside a printer-driver directory, inspect the file’s digital signature and its parent application before deciding that the filename is legitimate.
