If Windows says a0002997.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the FrontPage 2000 installation rather than downloading a replacement DLL from the internet.
The filename alone does not prove that a copy is genuine or safe. This is not a normal Windows system file, and there is no verified current Microsoft standalone download for it.

What a0002997.dll is
The reported file details are:
- File:
a0002997.dll - Description: Microsoft FrontPage Text Library
- Reported product: Microsoft FrontPage 2000
- Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
- Category: Microsoft application component
The exact file version, size, checksum, architecture, and installation path are not verified. Treat the FrontPage 2000 association as the starting point for troubleshooting, not as proof that every file with this name is legitimate.

Its files normally belong to the application installation, not to Windows itself. Do not copy this DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the 64-bit system directory and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components. Neither is a general-purpose location for application DLLs.

Messages you may see
Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because a0002997.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “a0002997.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting a0002997.dll.”
- “a0002997.dll could not be loaded.”
- “a0002997.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are typical Windows loader-style messages. Their exact wording for this particular file has not been independently verified.
The important clue is the program that displays the message. It may be FrontPage 2000, another legacy Office component, or an application that bundles or invokes an old FrontPage component. Do not assume that the program named in a shortcut is the executable requesting the DLL.
Before fixing it, identify the parent program
1. Confirm which application fails
Time needed: 5 minutes
Start the program that produces the error and note its exact name. Also check whether the problem began after one of these events:
Recommended Free Tools
- FrontPage or Office was reinstalled
- A partial uninstall was attempted
- Windows or an application was restored from backup
- Antivirus software quarantined a file
- The installation was moved to another computer
- A cleanup utility removed old application files
If the error appears when launching FrontPage 2000, the parent application is clear. If it appears from a game, launcher, script, or unrelated shortcut, first identify that application before restoring anything.
If the program opens far enough to show an error log, check the executable name there. Otherwise, right-click its shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect the Target field. This identifies the shortcut target, but it does not always prove which process made the DLL request.
2. Inspect the existing file, if present
Time needed: 5 minutes
Search the original application folder and any trusted backup for a0002997.dll.
Right-click the file and select Properties. Review:
-
General tab
Check the location and whether Windows reports that the file came from another computer. -
Details tab
Look for the description, product name, publisher, and version information. Missing metadata is suspicious but is not conclusive by itself. -
Digital Signatures tab
If a signature exists, open it and inspect the signer and signature status. An unsigned file is not automatically malware, but an unexpected signer or invalid signature requires caution. -

A copy in an unexpected folder, a file with a misleading description, or a file that fails antivirus scanning should not be copied into the FrontPage directory. Quarantine the system and perform a complete security scan before continuing.
Fix 1: Run FrontPage or Office maintenance repair
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
This is the safest and most likely fix when FrontPage 2000 is still installed.
Rank #2
From Control Panel
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Find Microsoft FrontPage 2000, Microsoft Office 2000, or the relevant Office installation.
- Select it.
- Choose Change.
- Select Repair, Repair Office, or the equivalent maintenance option.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Insert the original installation disc if Windows requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Launch FrontPage again.
On some systems, the entry appears under Programs and Features rather than with FrontPage’s exact name. If several Office versions are installed, select the installation that originally included FrontPage. Do not mix files from different Office releases.
From Windows Settings
On Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the relevant Microsoft Office or FrontPage entry.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what Windows exposes.
- Use the product maintenance program to select Repair.
Older MSI-based software may not expose a useful repair button in Settings. If that happens, use Control Panel or start the original setup program from the installation media.

The repair succeeded if FrontPage starts without the a0002997.dll message and the program’s normal features load. If the same error returns, continue to the reinstall step rather than copying a random DLL.
Fix 2: Reinstall FrontPage 2000 from trusted media
Time needed: 20–60 minutes
Use this fix when repair is unavailable, setup cannot find the original source, or the installation has mismatched files.
- Back up FrontPage projects, templates, web files, and any configuration you need.
- Confirm that you have the original FrontPage 2000 or Office 2000 installation media and a valid license.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs and Features.
- Select the existing FrontPage or Office installation.
- Choose Uninstall only after confirming that your project files are backed up.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Insert the original disc or open the organization’s verified software archive.
- Run the original setup program.
- Install the complete FrontPage 2000 product rather than copying individual DLLs.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application before restoring optional plugins or custom components.
Microsoft Office 2000 is obsolete, and a current official standalone download for a0002997.dll has not been verified. The safe sources are your original licensed media or a verified software archive maintained by your organization. Do not treat a search result offering the DLL alone as an official Microsoft source.
If the original media or license is unavailable, do not guess at a replacement file. Preserve your project data and determine whether the application can be migrated to a supported product or restored from an organization-controlled backup.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A damaged or incomplete installation can result from antivirus or cleanup software removing an application file.
- Open your antivirus or Windows Security application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or the equivalent history screen.
- Search for
a0002997.dll. - Check the detected file path.
- Compare that path with the known FrontPage installation location.
- Confirm that the parent application is genuinely installed.
- Run a full system scan.
- Restore the file only if it came from the trusted installation and the security product identifies it as safe.
- Run FrontPage again.
- If the file is removed again, stop restoring it and repair or reinstall the complete application from trusted media.
Do not disable antivirus merely to copy a DLL. A file with a Microsoft-looking name can still be modified, replaced, or placed in the wrong directory.
If the antivirus report indicates malware or tampering, disconnect the computer from sensitive networks, complete an offline or full scan, and reinstall FrontPage from trusted media after the system is clean.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit compatibility and file placement
Time needed: 10 minutes
FrontPage 2000 is legacy 32-bit software. A 64-bit replacement DLL is not a valid solution, and a file from another FrontPage or Office release may be incompatible.
Check the following:
- Do not place the file in
System32. - Do not place the file in
SysWOW64as a general fix. - Do not mix FrontPage 2000 files with newer Office installation files.
- Do not copy a DLL from another computer unless it came from the same trusted product release and installation source.
- Do not assume that a file being present means it is usable.
If Windows says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error,” suspect corruption, the wrong architecture, or a mismatched version. Reinstall the complete 32-bit legacy application instead of replacing one file at a time.
If repair succeeds but the message returns, check the application folder permissions, the executable’s working directory, compatibility settings, and whether security software is repeatedly removing the file.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
Use Windows servicing commands when other system corruption is suspected. They repair Windows components, not a missing FrontPage-private DLL, so they are secondary steps.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft documents DISM image repair and the System File Checker command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restart Windows after both commands complete and test FrontPage. If SFC reports that it repaired Windows files but a0002997.dll is still missing, that is expected for an application-private file. Return to FrontPage repair or reinstall.
Running these commands repeatedly without identifying what changed makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system issues and show what it found, while the repair function is handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling FrontPage remains the definitive fix for a missing application DLL.
Fix 6: Do not register this DLL unless the application requires it
Time needed: 5 minutes
Do not run regsvr32 a0002997.dll as a generic missing-DLL fix.
A text or resource library, or a private application DLL, may not export DllRegisterServer. In that case, regsvr32 produces an error because the file is not a self-registering ActiveX or COM component. Registration also cannot repair a missing, corrupt, wrong-version, or malicious file.
Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains the command and its intended use. Only register this file if verified FrontPage documentation or the product’s own installer specifically requires it. For normal FrontPage 2000 recovery, use the installer’s repair process.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when the failure points to hardware or graphics
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver update will not normally restore a missing FrontPage application DLL. Use this step only if the application fails alongside broader display, storage, or device errors.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Storage controllers, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Choose Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver only with a driver from the computer or hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not remove a working driver simply because a0002997.dll is missing. If the error began after a driver change, use Roll Back Driver when available, or restore the previous known-good driver from the manufacturer.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and it will not replace the need to repair or reinstall FrontPage when that is the parent application.
Causes and the corresponding fix
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Damaged or incomplete FrontPage installation | Run maintenance repair, then reinstall if repair fails |
| Antivirus or cleanup software removed the file | Review quarantine, scan the system, then repair the parent product |
| Failed uninstall or reinstall | Remove the incomplete installation and reinstall the complete product |
| Wrong-version or wrong-architecture copy | Install the complete 32-bit FrontPage 2000 product from trusted media |
| Disk or Windows corruption | Check the disk and run DISM/SFC, then repair FrontPage separately |
| Malware or tampering | Quarantine and scan the system, then reinstall from trusted media |
| Incorrect application association | Identify the actual requesting executable before restoring any file |
| Stale shortcut or incomplete application | Remove the shortcut or uninstall the incomplete application |
If the file is present but still will not load
A present file can still be unusable. Check these conditions:
-
Wrong location
The application may be looking in its own installation directory while the DLL is elsewhere. -
Wrong version
A similarly named file from another Office release may not satisfy FrontPage 2000. -
Wrong architecture
A 64-bit DLL cannot substitute for a required 32-bit component.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Corruption
The file may have been damaged on disk or during a failed restore. -
Security software interference
Antivirus may remove or block the file each time the application starts.Rank #4
-
Permissions
The user account may not have access to the application directory. -
Compatibility settings
Legacy software may require testing with its existing compatibility options, but compatibility mode does not replace missing application files.Quick wins for a faster PC:

FAQ
Is a0002997.dll malware?
The filename does not prove legitimacy or malware. A genuine file is reported as a Microsoft FrontPage Text Library associated with FrontPage 2000, but any individual copy must be checked by location, Properties details, digital signature, and antivirus results.
Does a0002997.dll belong to Windows?
No evidence indicates that it ships with Windows itself. Treat it as an application component associated with legacy FrontPage 2000, not as a Windows runtime file.
Can I download a0002997.dll by itself?
Do not use random DLL download sites listings. The file may be the wrong version, wrong architecture, modified, or malicious, and replacing it alone may leave the parent installation damaged. Use original FrontPage 2000 media or a verified organizational archive.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. System32 and SysWOW64 are not general storage locations for third-party application DLLs. Repair or reinstall FrontPage in its own installation instead.
Will SFC restore this file?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows components. It is useful when Windows corruption is also suspected, but it is not a substitute for repairing or reinstalling a missing FrontPage-private DLL.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually no. Registration is not a general DLL repair method, and a text or resource library may not support self-registration. Use the FrontPage installer unless verified product documentation specifically requires registration.
What if FrontPage 2000 is no longer installed?
Do not install the DLL alone. Remove the stale shortcut or reinstall the complete product from original licensed media or a verified archive. If that source is unavailable, preserve your project files and plan a migration to a supported application.
What if the error comes from a game or launcher?
Identify the actual executable requesting the file. Use the game’s Verify or Repair function only if that application is known to bundle FrontPage components. Otherwise, do not assume the game needs a Microsoft FrontPage DLL.
What if repair works but the error returns?
Check antivirus quarantine, permissions, the application’s working directory, compatibility settings, and whether multiple Office versions are interfering. If the file continues to disappear, scan for malware and reinstall the complete legacy application from trusted media.
