fxsroute.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Microsoft Fax Routing DLL. If Windows or an application reports that fxsroute.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows components first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

The exact file version and size depend on Windows release, architecture, servicing level, and language. Do not use an old file listing as a universal compatibility guide.
First, identify the exact failure
The wording helps determine whether the file itself is missing or whether another dependency is involved.

The phrase specified module could not be found does not always mean that fxsroute.dll is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to locate one of its dependencies. An incompatible architecture or damaged application installation can produce a similar result.
Before changing anything, note:
- The complete error text.
- The executable that displays it.
- Whether it appears during startup, when opening Windows Fax and Scan, or when launching a particular application.
- Whether the problem began after an update, crash, cleanup operation, antivirus action, or feature installation.
If only one application reports the problem, that application may be packaging or requesting the Windows DLL incorrectly.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
A pending cumulative update or interrupted servicing operation can leave protected system files mismatched.
- Open Start → Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist on a restart.
- Test the application or fax feature again.
If Windows reports that updates are pending, restart before running repair commands. A reboot allows servicing operations to finish and can resolve a missing-file message without manual replacement.

If Windows Update itself fails, record the displayed error and continue with DISM and SFC below.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
For a genuine Windows installation, this is the safest general repair path. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Restart Windows if DISM requests it.
The command may appear to pause at a percentage for some time. Do not close the window while it is working.
Run SFC
After DISM finishes successfully, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The useful results are:

- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files appear intact.

If you know the correct system path and want to scan only this file, Microsoft also supports:
sfc /scanfile=%windir%System32fxsroute.dll
Use the actual path shown by your Windows installation. Do not assume that a copy in an application folder is the system copy.
The manual process can require reading CBS logs, repeating repairs, and finding a matching Windows installation source when DISM cannot use Windows Update. A damaged Windows Update component can prevent DISM from retrieving repair files. In that situation, use installation media that matches the installed Windows edition, language, architecture, and servicing level.
Microsoft’s System File Checker repair guidance explains how to use a matching source with /Source and /LimitAccess. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary ISO or another computer’s system folder.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Fax and Scan is installed
The error may appear when the Fax feature is incomplete or has been removed. On modern Windows, Windows Fax and Scan is a Feature-on-Demand component. Microsoft identifies its capability as:
Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0
Microsoft also notes that Windows Fax and Scan is not preinstalled after Windows 11 version 22H2.
Install Windows Fax and Scan through Settings
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for
fax. - Select Windows Fax and Scan.
- Select Next.
- Select Install.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Test the fax application again.
Windows 10 may display the feature through Settings → Apps → Optional features → Add a feature. The wording varies by build.
Install the capability from an elevated Command Prompt
If the graphical option is unavailable, open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:Print.Fax.Scan~~~~0.0.1.0
Allow the operation to finish, restart Windows, and test Windows Fax and Scan.
If DISM cannot find the capability, the required Feature-on-Demand source may not be available through Windows Update. Use a matching Microsoft source rather than downloading a loose DLL. Microsoft describes the capability and package in its Features on Demand documentation.
Installing Windows Fax and Scan is relevant when the error appears while using fax functions. It is not proof that every application reporting fxsroute.dll actually needs the fax feature.
Fix 4: Repair the Fax Server role on Windows Server
Windows Fax and Scan and the Fax Server role are separate components. If this is a Windows Server machine, check whether the server role is installed and complete.

- Open Server Manager.
- Select Manage.
- Select Add Roles and Features.
- Continue through the wizard until the Server Roles page.
- Select Fax Server.
- Continue through the wizard.
- Install the role and restart if requested.
- Recheck the fax service and the application that reported the error.
Microsoft provides the documented procedure in its Fax Server step-by-step guide.
Do not install the Fax Server role simply because a game or unrelated desktop application displays fxsroute.dll. First establish that the computer actually provides fax services.

If Windows Fax and Scan works but one application or game still fails, repair that program instead of copying fxsroute.dll into its folder.
For a desktop application
- Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Locate the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Select Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same page and select Reset only if you understand that application data may be removed.
- If neither option is available, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer.
For a game
Use the launcher’s file repair function, usually labelled Verify, Verify files, Scan and repair, or Repair installation. The exact menu depends on the launcher.
If the game is old, its installer may incorrectly request a Windows component or may include a faulty dependency declaration. Test the program’s compatibility settings and consult the application vendor’s support documentation. Do not assume that adding a fax feature will make an unrelated game work.
If the application installs a private copy of fxsroute.dll in its own directory, do not overwrite that copy automatically. The application may require a particular build, or the file may be part of a damaged installation.

A file name alone does not establish that a DLL is genuine.
Check in File Explorer
- Press Win+E.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Locate
fxsroute.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Details tab.
- Confirm that the description identifies Microsoft Fax Routing DLL and that the company is Microsoft Corporation.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
On 64-bit Windows, %windir%System32 normally contains native 64-bit system files. %windir%SysWOW64 is used for 32-bit system-file redirection. The directory names are counterintuitive, so do not assume that SysWOW64 contains the 64-bit copy.

Check the signature with PowerShell
You can also open Windows PowerShell as administrator and run:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32fxsroute.dll"
A genuine system file should have a valid Microsoft signature. If the file is in an application folder, inspect that exact path instead.
If the signature is invalid, missing, or belongs to an unexpected publisher:

- Do not run or register the file.
- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan.
- Use Microsoft Defender Offline if malware is suspected.
- Check antivirus quarantine history.
- Run DISM and SFC.
- Investigate why the file appeared outside the normal Windows path.
Restore a quarantined file only when the detection is demonstrably false and the file’s Microsoft signature can be verified.
Fix 7: Check drivers only when fax hardware is involved
A fax modem, multifunction printer, or related device can fail separately from fxsroute.dll. If the error appears while using fax hardware, inspect the device driver.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Modems, Print queues, Printers, and Network adapters as appropriate.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for a device status message.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the device.
Prefer drivers supplied through Windows Update or the hardware manufacturer. Do not replace fxsroute.dll with a driver package.
Manually checking every device, matching hardware IDs, and determining which driver changed can be time-consuming. Fix 8: Check for architecture or dependency problems
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit application may use different Windows file-system paths. Copying a DLL from another computer can therefore create a mismatch even when the file name is identical.
Avoid these actions:
- Copying
fxsroute.dllfrom another PC. - Copying a Windows 10 file onto Windows 11.
- Copying a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit application.
- Copying a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application.
- Placing a downloaded file into both
System32andSysWOW64. - Choosing the file with the highest displayed version number.
Use DISM, SFC, Optional Features, or the Fax Server role so Windows supplies the correct build. If the message says that the file is not designed to run on Windows, an architecture or version mismatch is especially plausible.

A dependency may be missing. Reinstalling the affected application from its official installer is usually safer than adding individual DLLs.
Why regsvr32 is not the normal fix
Do not run this as a routine repair:
regsvr32 fxsroute.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point, commonly COM or ActiveX components. fxsroute.dll is a fax-routing system DLL, not a general-purpose self-registering component. A typical result is:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean the file needs a different download. It means the requested registration function is not present. Microsoft documents the purpose and syntax of regsvr32, but it does not recommend registering every DLL.
What not to do
Do not download fxsroute.dll from a random DLL website. A downloaded copy can contain malware, belong to the wrong Windows release, use the wrong architecture, or fail to include a dependency. It can also hide the real cause, such as component-store corruption or a broken application installer.
Do not place an arbitrary DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory. Do not use registry cleaners or generic driver tools as a substitute for DISM and SFC. Do not copy the file from another PC unless you are working from a verified matching Windows source, and even then component repair is preferable.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows component repair, matching Microsoft installation media, Windows Optional Features, and the Microsoft Fax Server role.
Fix 9: Use System Restore when the problem is recent
If the error began after a driver installation, update, cleanup operation, or failed feature change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.

- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
You can also open Control Panel → Recovery → Open System Restore. System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove applications, drivers, and updates installed after the selected restore point. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore guidance.

Fix 10: Perform a Windows repair installation
If DISM, SFC, feature repair, updates, and System Restore fail, Windows may have broader component corruption.
Back up important data first. Then use Microsoft installation media for the same Windows edition and architecture to perform an in-place repair installation, keeping personal files and applications when the installer offers that choice.
A repair installation is different from a clean installation. Confirm the selected installer option carefully. If Windows cannot start reliably, protected files cannot be repaired, or system services are failing broadly, professional recovery or a clean reinstall may be necessary.

Is fxsroute.dll malware?
Not by itself. fxsroute.dll is a legitimate Microsoft Windows file. Verify its location, file details, and digital signature. A copy in an unexpected folder with an invalid signature deserves investigation.

Use the Fax Server role procedure when the machine is Windows Server and is meant to provide server-based fax services. For a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 desktop, check Windows Fax and Scan instead.
