Andreessen Horowitz’s Games group said it would invest up to $75 million through Speedrun 2024, its accelerator for pre-seed startups at the intersection of games and technology. That figure was a commitment ceiling—not confirmation that the full $75 million was ultimately invested.

What is a16z Speedrun?

Speedrun is a startup accelerator created by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). The 2024 edition was framed around “Games x Tech” and targeted promising pre-seed companies. In its announcement, the a16z Speedrun account said it was committing up to $75 million to the program. The post did not identify an individual speaker.

What did the $75 million commitment cover?

The announcement presented the $75 million as a pool of investment for Speedrun 2024 startups, not as a grant, prize, or guaranteed amount for each company. Speedrun described its investment for participating startups as $500,000 per company. The announcement does not establish how many startups ultimately received funding or how much of the commitment was deployed.

The 2024 program was described as a 10-week accelerator with an in-person Bay Area component and a Demo Day associated with GDC. Those are historical terms for that cohort; they should not be assumed to describe later Speedrun programs.

Why did a16z repeat the program?

Speedrun’s announcement cited the preceding cohort as evidence of demand and fundraising outcomes. It said the program selected 32 startups from more than 1,600 applicants and that 80% secured additional funding after Demo Day. These are figures reported by Speedrun itself; they were not presented as independently audited results, and the retrieved announcement does not state the cohort year for those figures.

How much does a16z invest in Speedrun startups now?

Speedrun’s later terms differ from the 2024 offer. Its SR007 announcement described an offer of $500,000 for 10% upfront via a SAFE, plus a further $500,000 into the company’s next round within 18 months. The same announcement gave cohort dates in 2026, so those terms belong to that later cohort and should not be read back into the 2024 program.

Current official materials describe Speedrun more broadly as offering up to $1 million in investment, alongside operator support, a founder community, and credits or partner tools. The official FAQ describes the program as 12 weeks and reports an acceptance rate below 0.4%; that rate is Speedrun’s own claim, not an independently established statistic.

Is Speedrun still only for game startups?

No. In 2025, a16z described Speedrun as expanding beyond its games roots into technology and entertainment. The broader areas named included 3D, creative tools, gaming, streaming, and XR. That later scope helps distinguish the current program from the 2024 cohort’s Games x Tech framing.

What founders should compare when evaluating Speedrun

Program terms can vary by cohort, so founders should use the specific cohort announcement and official materials when assessing fit. Relevant points include:

  • Investment and terms: distinguish the initial investment from any follow-on investment, and check the instrument, equity, and timing.
  • Duration and location: confirm the cohort’s length and whether participation includes an in-person component.
  • Category fit: check whether the cohort is focused on games or includes the broader technology and entertainment areas.
  • Support and access: review the operator support, founder community, partner credits, and investor access offered for that cohort.
  • Follow-on financing: understand any rights or conditions tied to later investment.

The 2024 announcement and later program materials describe different cohorts and terms; neither establishes the final amount deployed from the original $75 million commitment.
