Absolum has four playable characters. Galandra and Karl are available immediately; recruit Cider by progressing through Grandery and rescuing them in a later fight, and recruit Brome after defeating the Underking and helping him in Jordoa. Recruited heroes return to the Sanctuary for later runs.
All Absolum character unlocks at a glance
| Character | How to unlock |
|---|---|
| Galandra | Available from the start. |
| Karl | Available from the start. |
| Cider | Progress through Grandery, defeat Gazog, then help Cider in a later battle against Azra’s minions. |
| Brome | Defeat the Underking, reach Jordoa, and help Brome in a battle. |
The two starting heroes are selectable immediately. Cider and Brome require story progression and rescue encounters; completing their encounters returns them to the Sanctuary, where they become available for subsequent runs. These steps are reported in Prima Games’ unlock guide and All Things How’s recruitment guide.
How to unlock Cider
- Progress through Grandery and defeat Gazog.
- Continue until you have met the Goblin Elder.
- In a later encounter, join Cider in fighting Azra’s minions. Defeating the enemies completes the rescue.
Cider then returns to the Sanctuary and becomes selectable. The encounter is progression-triggered and may occur across early runs, rather than being a character you can choose as soon as you first enter Grandery.
How to unlock Brome
- Defeat the Underking. This opens the route to the next region.
- Continue into Jordoa and find Brome’s encounter.
- Help Brome defeat the enemies in battle.
After the fight, Brome returns to the Sanctuary and is available for later runs. One route guide places the encounter at the fourth node and notes that freeing Vikhana marks Brome’s location; treat that as route guidance, while the shared requirements across guides are defeating the Underking, reaching Jordoa, and aiding Brome in combat.

What changes when you recruit a character?
Recruitment adds the hero to the roster for later runs; it does not replace your shared progression. Prima Games reports that Soul Tree buffs apply to all characters, while character-specific Arcana are unlocked individually. A newly recruited hero therefore benefits from shared Soul Tree upgrades, but still has their own Arcana progression.
Which character should you try first?
The official Absolum site describes four different combat styles: Galandra fights with a large sword and necromantic powers; Karl is a dwarf who wields the weapon Beste; Cider combines high-flying kicks and handaxes with an extendable arm; and Brome is a frog-like wizard who attacks with a staff and ranged or area-of-effect spells.

- COLLECTIBLE FIGURES AND ROLEPLAY TOYS: Fans, collectors, and kids alike can enjoy these collectible figures and roleplay toys, inspired by characters from the Marvel Universe.
Those descriptions suggest different preferences rather than a definitive ranking. Try Galandra for sword-based combat, Cider for mobility and kicks, or Brome for ranged spell attacks; the available character descriptions do not establish that one hero is objectively strongest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do I need a particular edition to unlock everyone?
No special purchase or edition is identified as a requirement for these recruitment steps. The game’s publisher describes Absolum as available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 in its launch announcement. Arc System Works also lists physical console editions, including PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch products and a Nintendo Switch 2 edition, on its product page. Those editions are optional; the unlock route is based on in-game progression.
