Absurdle is a Wordle-style word puzzle that chooses its feedback after you guess. Instead of starting with one fixed answer, it keeps a set of words that fit every clue so far and returns the valid color pattern that leaves the largest group of candidates. Your task is to narrow that set until one word remains.
What is Absurdle?
Absurdle is an adversarial take on Wordle. In regular Wordle, the answer is selected before the first guess. In Absurdle, the game does not initially commit to one secret word. It tracks possible answers and, for each guess, chooses among the feedback patterns those words would produce. The chosen pattern is the one that preserves the largest candidate group, so the game tries to delay your solution while keeping every clue consistent with at least one remaining word. The open-source implementation documentation explains this candidate-set approach.

This is why the answer can seem to change: the game is selecting its response as play unfolds, rather than switching away from a previously fixed word. Each result still follows the rules of the game’s word list and the clues already given.

How to play
The documented implementation uses words of a fixed length; the familiar version uses five-letter words. The exact accepted guesses, word list, and turn limits can differ by version, so use the instructions shown by the particular game you open.
- Open the creator-linked browser game if it is available, or choose a clearly identified third-party version.
- Enter a valid word of the length required by that implementation.
- Read the returned tiles as constraints: green means the letter is correct and in the correct position; yellow means the letter is in the answer but elsewhere; gray means the letter is absent, subject to repeated-letter handling.
- Use the complete pattern to reason about the remaining possibilities. Absurdle selects feedback that retains the largest possible candidate group.
- Keep guessing until the remaining possibilities are forced to one word and the game returns an all-green result.
What do the colors mean when letters repeat?
Repeated letters make the feedback less intuitive than simply checking whether a letter appears anywhere. The documented implementation assigns exact green matches first; only unmatched copies can then turn yellow if the target has an available copy. Consequently, a gray tile does not always mean that no copy of that letter is in the answer: it can mean that the guess contains more copies than the answer does.

The repository’s examples show this accounting: patternFor("abbey", "bebop") returns 🟨🟨🟩⬜⬜, while patternFor("abbey", "keeps") returns ⬜🟨⬜⬜⬜. These examples are specific to the documented implementation; a clone’s exact behavior should be checked against its own rules.
How Absurdle chooses its response
For a guess, the game groups the current candidate words according to the color pattern each word would produce. It then returns the pattern associated with the largest group, and that group becomes the candidate set for the next turn. In effect, it removes as few candidates as it can while remaining consistent with the clues.

The implementation’s documentation illustrates the process using a small four-letter toy dictionary. In that example, tied groups are resolved by sorted pattern order. That is an implementation-specific tie rule, not a universal Absurdle rule; another version may use different tie-breaking or a different candidate list.
How to think about strategy
Choose guesses that reveal useful letters and positions, then update your deductions from the exact pattern returned. Do not treat the game as though it has already picked a hidden word and is merely concealing it: its largest-group rule can produce feedback that is valid but less informative than another possible response.

- Track green positions as fixed and yellow letters as present but barred from the guessed positions.
- Apply gray feedback with care when your guess repeats a letter, since extra copies can be gray even when another copy is present.
- Prefer guesses that test several informative letters or placements when the current clues leave many candidates.
- Do not rely on a supposedly guaranteed opening word. Results depend on the version’s candidate dictionary and tie behavior, and the available documentation does not establish one universally fastest strategy.
What to know about versions and rules
The core adversarial mechanic is documented in the open-source implementation, but exact details such as the word list, accepted guesses, number of attempts, daily-play format, and tie-breaking can vary between versions. The creator-linked page is a route to try, not a confirmed statement of current uptime. Likewise, the Medrodome Software listing is a separate Android option; its presence does not establish that its rules or candidate set match qntm’s game.
