ABZÛ is an underwater adventure about exploring an imagined ocean and connecting with its life—not a scuba-diving simulator. Its resemblance to Journey has a real creative link behind it, but the comparison is only part of what makes the game distinct: its ocean setting, encounters with marine life, and story shaped as a universal myth.
Is ABZÛ a scuba diving simulator?
No. Director Matt Nava describes ABZÛ as “about the dream of scuba diving, rather being a simulation of it.” The distinction matters: the game draws on Nava’s own scuba-diving experiences to evoke the wonder of being underwater, but it is not presented as instruction in real-world diving or a guide to safe dive procedures. Nava’s description of the game frames its aim as connection with the ocean rather than technical simulation.

That focus shapes the player fantasy. You explore an imagined sea and encounter its inhabitants; the appeal is discovery and atmosphere, not mastering diving equipment or following real-world protocols.
Why is ABZÛ compared with Journey?
The comparison has a clear creative basis. Nava was art director on Flower and Journey before founding Giant Squid, where he directed ABZÛ—his first game as director at the studio. Giant Squid’s studio introduction describes that earlier work as part of the creative background he wanted to extend, and Steam presents ABZÛ as an underwater adventure from the art director of Journey and Flower.

There are also useful similarities in the games’ presentation, which help explain why the shorthand stuck. But a shared creative lineage does not make them the same game. Journey takes place in a desert; ABZÛ builds its experience around underwater exploration and marine life. A 2016 TIME review also points to Flower as a comparison, illustrating that critics can read the resemblance in more than one way. That is interpretation, not a definitive statement of the developers’ intent.
What makes ABZÛ’s ocean and story distinct?
Marine life is central to the experience
Nava’s portfolio description says the game features hundreds of real fish species and simulated schooling behavior. The emphasis is on encountering life in a vibrant underwater world, not treating animals as a backdrop to a technical diving exercise. The source gives no more exact species count, so “hundreds” is the appropriate level of precision.

The studio frames the story as a universal myth
Giant Squid describes ABZÛ as an epic descent into the ocean, with a story drawing on a universal myth intended to resonate across cultures. The studio glosses the title as “the ocean of wisdom,” explaining AB as ocean and ZÛ as knowing. That is the studio’s interpretation of the name, not a settled scholarly etymology. Its official game page gives the studio’s framing.

- LEAK-PROOF SEAL IN 2 SIZES – L/XL fits most adult faces, S/M fits teens and narrow faces. The soft food-grade silicone skirt follows your face curve with no gaps, so no salty water leaking in, no painful red marks, and no stopping to re-adjust mid-swim. Quick-release buckles let you tighten the strap even with wet hands. Fit test before every dive: hold the mask to your face without the strap and inhale gently – if it sticks, the seal is watertight. Check the size guide to pick the right fit.
- ENHANCED ANTI-FOG LENSES - Advanced polycarbonate lens with anti-fog treatment avoids fogging up. Both the impact resistance and higher drop resistance are much better than tempered glass. You can relax with the lightweight snorkel mask while you snorkel, so enjoy the ocean’s secrets. Note: Anti-fog coating works best when rinsed with fresh water before each use. Avoid wiping the inside of the lens to preserve the coating.

Furthermore, the full-face snorkel view will not distort your horizons by adopting advanced polycarbonate lenses, eliminating any dizziness or discomfort. - ADVANCED TOP VALVE SYSTEM – The one-way purge valve sits at the bottom of the reservoir, separate from the mouthpiece tube, allowing you to blow out water effortlessly – even while underwater.
