To host Abyssal Ascent, install the dedicated server pack for one exact release, run it with 64-bit Java 17 and Forge’s supplied launch script, accept the Minecraft EULA, then make every client use the identical pack, Minecraft, and Forge versions. The current files listing shows Abyssal Ascent 0.2.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge, released September 22, 2026. A separate 1.20.1 Forge server pack is listed for 0.2.2.2, so verify that a server-pack attachment exists for the precise release you choose before creating the world.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
This guide covers a self-hosted Windows, Linux, or macOS server, the files to change, memory guidance, networking, updates, and the failure modes that most often prevent players from joining.

What Abyssal Ascent needs from a server
Abyssal Ascent is a Forge modpack built around vertically stacked dimensions connected with Immersive Portals. Progression moves from the Undergarden through hostile dimensions toward the Overworld, with custom recipes, bosses, biomes, equipment, resources, and proximity voice chat. That design puts more emphasis on consistent world data and mod configuration than a small collection of client-only mods would.
Use one complete release on both sides of the connection. Do not combine a 1.19.2 installation with the 1.20.1 line, and do not let some players use 0.2.2.x while the server runs 0.2.3. The safest rule is to record the exact release, Minecraft version, and Forge loader before downloading anything.

Current release and older files
| Pack line | Minecraft and loader | Release information | Use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abyssal Ascent 0.2.3 | Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge | Shown as released September 22, 2026 | Current listing; use for a new installation if the matching server pack is available |
| Abyssal Ascent 0.2.2.2 | Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge | A dedicated 1.20.1 Forge server pack is listed | Use when you deliberately need this release or its server-pack attachment |
| Older 0.2.2.x files | 1.20.1, Forge | Remain visible in the files list | Only for an existing world or a group that is intentionally staying on that version |
| 1.19.2 line | Minecraft 1.19.2, Forge | Separate compatibility line | Cannot be mixed with the 1.20.1 line |
A world generated in one line should be treated as belonging to that line. Version changes can alter dimensions, structures, recipes, entities, and configuration, so updating is a migration project rather than replacing a few files while the server is running.
Hardware, Java, and file prerequisites
Java requirement
Forge’s documentation for 1.20.x requires a 64-bit Java 17 JDK or JVM. Check the Java that your shell will actually invoke before installing the pack:
java -version
The output should identify Java 17 and a 64-bit runtime. A different Java version, a 32-bit runtime, or a Java installation that is present but not on the system path can stop the server before Forge begins loading. If more than one Java installation is present, configure the operating system or the supplied launch script so it uses the Java 17 installation you verified.
Memory guidance
The Abyssal Ascent project reports 4 GB of allocated RAM as stable guidance from its 2025/2026 project testing. That is guidance, not a guaranteed minimum for every host. Player count, view distance, dimension activity, JVM behavior, background applications, and the host’s physical memory all affect the result. The same project warns that allocating 8 GB or more can cause instability on some systems. More allocation is therefore not an automatic fix.
| Figure | What it describes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 4 GB allocated RAM | Project-reported stable Abyssal Ascent guidance from 2025/2026 | Reasonable starting allocation for a dedicated server, then monitor logs and memory use |
| 8 GB or more | Project warning that some systems become unstable when over-allocated | Do not assign this amount reflexively; test gradually and leave memory for the operating system |
| 6 GB RAM | Project’s client-oriented figure for 100+ FPS at 1080p with Complementary shaders | Not a server requirement; do not use the shader target to size a server |
The project also gives a client example of a Core i5-6700 or Ryzen 5 1600 paired with an RTX 2060 6 GB or Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB for that shader target. Those graphics examples concern rendering on a player’s computer, not the CPU, memory, or graphics requirements of the server process.
Keep the installation isolated
Create a dedicated directory for this server, separate from the client’s .minecraft directory and from every other modded server. Isolation keeps worlds, logs, configuration, crash reports, backups, and rollback copies unambiguous. It also prevents a later client update from silently changing files that the server needs.

Download the correct server pack
- Open the Abyssal Ascent files listing and choose the exact release you intend to run. For a new installation, the current listing is 0.2.3 for Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge; for an existing world, select the release that world already uses.
- Inspect the attachments for that release and download its dedicated server pack when one is provided. The listing specifically shows a 1.20.1 Forge server pack for 0.2.2.2. Do not assume that a server pack exists for every release, and do not substitute a random older attachment without checking its version.
- Save the archive outside the server directory until you have confirmed its filename and release. Keeping the original archive gives you a clean recovery copy if extraction is interrupted.
- Extract the archive into the empty, dedicated server folder. Preserve the supplied directory structure, scripts, libraries, configuration files, and mod files.
A server pack is preferable to reconstructing a server by copying a client’s mods folder. Client profiles can contain optional client-only files, launcher metadata, shader material, or a different set of configuration values. If the selected release has no server-pack attachment, check the project’s instructions for the supported installation method rather than inventing a layout.
Install and start the Forge server
Windows
Open the extracted folder and run the supplied run.bat. Modern Forge installations use the generated script and argument files; a generic command such as java -jar forge.jar is not necessarily valid for a current installation. If Windows closes the window immediately, start Command Prompt in the server directory and run run.bat there so the error remains visible.
Linux or macOS
Use the supplied run.sh. On a Unix-like system, make the script executable if the archive did not preserve that permission, then launch it from the server directory. The script should be run from the folder containing the Forge files so relative paths resolve correctly.
Set memory in the supplied argument file
Forge’s server README identifies user_jvm_args.txt as the place for user JVM arguments. Put memory options there rather than replacing the entire launch command. Begin near the project’s 4 GB guidance, leave enough physical memory for the operating system, and change the allocation in small steps while watching the server log and operating-system memory pressure.

Accept the EULA and complete first-run generation
- Stop or wait for the first launch to exit.
- Open the generated
eula.txtin the server folder. - Read the Minecraft EULA. Change only
eula=falsetoeula=trueif you accept its terms. - Save the file and run the same supplied script again:
run.baton Windows orrun.shon Linux/macOS. - Allow the second run to finish generating the world and configuration. Stop the server cleanly from its console before making broad file changes.
Changing the value without accepting the license is not a technical workaround. The server will continue to stop at the EULA gate if the value is left false or the file is saved in the wrong directory.
Configure server.properties and the config directory
After a successful generation, edit server.properties and the pack’s config directory while the server is stopped. Forge identifies these as the supported configuration surfaces. Make one deliberate change at a time and restart to catch errors close to their cause.

Settings worth deciding before inviting players
- Server name and message: Give players a recognizable name so they do not join the wrong instance.
- Difficulty: Choose the intended challenge before progression begins; Abyssal Ascent’s hostile dimensions make this more consequential than on a vanilla test world.
- Whitelist: Enable and populate it for a private group. Test that an authorized account can connect before sharing the address.
- View distance: Start conservatively if the host is under load. Increase only after observing tick performance and memory use.
- Port: The default Minecraft server port is 25565, but the actual listening port is whatever
server.propertiesspecifies. - Pack configuration: Change options in the supplied
configdirectory only when you understand whether the option is server-side, client-side, or required to match on both sides.
Keep a copy of the original configuration before editing. If a change causes a crash or unexpected behavior, restore the last known-good file rather than deleting configuration at random.
Make every player’s client match
A successful server process does not guarantee that a player can join. Every participant should install the same Abyssal Ascent release, the same Minecraft version, the same Forge loader line, and any required client-side configuration. A server running 0.2.3 should reject the assumption that a 0.2.2.x or 1.19.2 client is interchangeable.
Client/server matching checklist
- Pack release number is identical, including the complete patch number.
- Minecraft version is identical: 1.20.1 clients join the 1.20.1 line, not 1.19.2.
- Forge loader line is compatible with the selected pack release.
- Required mods and mod versions came from the same release rather than a hand-assembled folder.
- Client-side configuration required by the pack has been installed.
- Players removed stale profiles or duplicate installations that could launch a different version.
When a client is rejected, compare these items before changing server files. “It has the same modpack name” is not sufficient evidence; launchers can retain multiple releases under similar profile names.
Make the server reachable
Local testing
Test from the host computer first. A local connection confirms that Forge is listening and that the world can accept a player before you introduce router or firewall variables. If local testing fails, inspect the server console and configuration rather than forwarding ports.

Home-network hosting
- Allow the Java server process through the host operating system’s firewall, or create a rule for the configured TCP server port.
- Confirm the port in
server.properties. If it remains at the default, that is 25565; if you changed it, use the changed value everywhere. - Forward that port on the router to the host computer’s local address. A forwarding rule aimed at an old DHCP address will stop working when the host receives a different address.
- Give friends the reachable external address and port, not the host’s private LAN address. Players on the same network may use the local address instead.
- Test from outside the home network. Some routers do not support reliable hairpin connections, so a test from a phone hotspot or another external network can reveal whether forwarding actually works.
Do not publish an address until the firewall, forwarding rule, and configured port agree. Exposing a server also means keeping the operating system, Java runtime, and pack files maintained and limiting access with a whitelist when appropriate.
When friends cannot connect
- Verify the server is still running and has finished loading the world.
- Check that the player is using the configured port, especially if it is not 25565.
- Confirm the firewall rule applies to the Java process and the correct network profile.
- Check the router’s forwarding destination and whether the host’s local address changed.
- Test locally, then externally, so you know which layer fails.
- Read the server log for rejected connections or a crash instead of repeatedly changing router settings.
Backups and safe version changes
Stop the server cleanly before copying files. At minimum, back up the world directory, the config directory, and the server files needed to reproduce the selected release. Keep backups outside the live server folder and label them with the pack version and date.
Before an update
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server from its console.
- Copy the complete world and configuration to a separate backup location.
- Record the old Abyssal Ascent release, Minecraft version, Forge version, Java version, and any manual settings.
- Install the new server pack in a separate directory when possible. Do not overwrite the only working installation.
- Apply the update to a copy of the world first and inspect startup logs, dimensions, recipes, and player data.
- Keep the old directory untouched until everyone has connected successfully and the new world has been backed up.
Abyssal Ascent’s multi-dimensional design increases the cost of an untested migration: a change can affect more than the Overworld. If the new release crashes or damages progression, stop it, restore the pre-update copy, and return clients to the old release.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct access to scripts, configuration, logs, backups, and version files, but you also own every operational task. The project recommends its official partner Kinetic Hosting as a managed route and says the pack is available through that provider’s one-click modpack installer, with updates tested on those servers. Check current plan features, pricing, limits, and commercial terms before committing; those details can change.
| Consideration | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Initial setup | Download the exact pack, install Java 17, extract files, run scripts, accept the EULA, and configure the host | Provider handles the machine and usually exposes a guided or one-click installation flow |
| File and config control | Full control over scripts, server.properties, config, logs, and backups |
Control depends on the provider’s panel, file access, and policy |
| Backups | You must schedule, store, and test your own copies | May be included, optional, or limited; verify retention and restore access |
| Networking | You handle firewall rules, router forwarding, address changes, and external testing | Provider supplies a reachable endpoint, while you still manage player access and pack settings |
| Troubleshooting | You diagnose Java, Forge, memory, storage, and network failures | Provider can reduce infrastructure work, but pack and configuration problems may remain yours |
| Version changes | You can keep parallel installations and choose exactly when to migrate | Updates may be streamlined, but verify that the desired release and backups are available |
| Ongoing cost | Uses your hardware, electricity, bandwidth, and maintenance time | Requires a paid hosting plan; current terms are not established here |
Choose self-hosting when you are comfortable maintaining Java, the launch scripts, storage, and router rules. Choose a managed service when reducing infrastructure work matters more than having unrestricted control of the machine.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server crashes before loading
Confirm that Java is 64-bit Java 17, then verify that the server pack, Minecraft version, Forge version, and selected Abyssal Ascent release agree. A 1.19.2 file in a 1.20.1 installation, or a launcher profile copied from another release, can fail before the world opens. Re-extract the exact server pack into a clean directory rather than layering files over a damaged installation.

The console stops at “EULA”
Open the generated eula.txt in the live server directory, read the license, set eula=true only if you accept it, save, and rerun the supplied script. Editing a similarly named file in another folder has no effect.
Files are missing or the server has the wrong mods
Download the server pack attached to the exact release again. Do not reconstruct the installation from an arbitrary client mods folder. Confirm that extraction did not create an extra nested directory, leaving the scripts and configuration one level below the folder from which you launch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clients are rejected during login
Compare the complete pack release, Minecraft version, Forge loader line, and required client configuration on both sides. Remove duplicate client profiles and have every player launch the same profile. If only one player fails, the server is often healthy and that client is using stale or mismatched files.
Lag, freezes, or instability appear
Start with the project’s 4 GB allocation guidance, inspect logs and operating-system memory use, and adjust user_jvm_args.txt gradually. Check view distance, active players, and dimension activity before assigning more heap. The project warns that 8 GB or more can destabilize some systems, so over-allocation is not a universal cure. Keep free physical memory for the operating system and other services.
Friends cannot connect, but local play works
Check the configured port, host firewall, router forwarding destination, and reachable external address in that order. Confirm that the router forwards the same port shown in server.properties, and test from an external network. A local success proves the Forge process is listening; it does not prove that the router is forwarding traffic.
