ac1st17.dll Not Found: Restore the Autodesk Application Safely

Length9 min Posted Quest giverVGSources Team

Start with this three-minute check

Before replacing anything, identify:

  1. Which program launches the error: AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, an Autodesk vertical product, a RealDWG application, an add-in, or an installer.
  2. When the error appears: at Windows sign-in, when opening the Autodesk program, while loading a drawing, or during installation.
  3. Which Windows architecture is installed: go to Settings → System → About and check System type.

ac1st17.dll is an Autodesk application DLL associated with ObjectDBX and AutoCAD-family software. It is not a Windows system component. AutoCAD-era products and other software built on Autodesk RealDWG or ObjectDBX may load it.

The safest first move is to repair the exact Autodesk product named by the error. Do not download the file from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk product

This is the most likely solution when the file was deleted, damaged, or left behind incorrectly after an update or cleanup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 classic installer

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Find the Autodesk product that produces the error.
  4. Right-click it and select Uninstall/Change.
  5. Choose Repair.
  6. Follow the installer prompts.
  7. Restart Windows.
  8. Launch the same program again.

Repair restores missing product files while retaining the existing installation where possible.

If the error disappears, open a drawing or repeat the action that previously triggered it. If the same message remains, return to Programs and Features, choose Uninstall/Change again, and select Reinstall instead of Repair. Reinstall replaces the application files and repairs installation data using the original installation source.

For newer Autodesk installers, a Repair button may not be available. In that case:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Find the Autodesk application.
  3. Select the three-dot menu beside it.
  4. Choose Uninstall.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Download or install the product again from your Autodesk Account, company deployment image, original media, or another verified Autodesk source.
  7. Run the installer as an administrator.

Reinstall the product that launches the error, not merely another Autodesk program with a similar name. Reinstalling AutoCAD will not necessarily repair a separate RealDWG-based application.

Fix 2: Match the product, update, and architecture

A file named ac1st17.dll is not a universal Autodesk replacement. The correct build depends on the product and update level.

Public records identify multiple versions, including 17.0.54.0, 17.1.51.0, and 17.2.56.0. These records refer to separate product or update contexts. Do not select a version because it is the newest one listed online.

AutoCAD 2009 was available in both 32-bit and 64-bit product editions, but public metadata for ac1st17.dll is predominantly 32-bit. That does not prove that every Autodesk product uses the same 32-bit file, nor does it establish that a 64-bit build is available.

Check the application that fails:

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
  2. Note the exact product name and release.
  3. Open Control Panel → Programs and Features if the application is not fully identified.
  4. Check whether the error began after an update, service pack, system cleanup, or backup restoration.
  5. Apply only updates intended for that exact Autodesk product and edition.
  6. Restart Windows and test the application.

Autodesk’s AutoCAD 2009 Update 3 documentation specifically lists ac1st17.dll among the files updated by that service pack. That does not make the update suitable for every AutoCAD-family product. A patch for the wrong release can leave related DLLs mismatched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your organization uses a deployment image, ask the administrator for the original image rather than copying the DLL from another workstation.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus software can remove or quarantine an application file. A quarantine entry does not, by itself, prove that the file is safe, so verify its origin before restoring it.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection history.
  4. Look for an event mentioning ac1st17.dll or the Autodesk installation directory.
  5. Expand the event and review the detected path and action.
  6. Restore the file only if it came from the genuine Autodesk installation and the computer is not showing signs of infection.
  7. Run a full scan.
  8. Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product afterward if the application still fails.

Reinstalling from verified Autodesk media is safer than restoring a file whose provenance is uncertain. Do not add a broad exclusion for the Windows folder or download a replacement DLL to bypass the detection.

If the file repeatedly disappears after reinstalling, leave antivirus protection enabled and investigate the detection. The file name and an Autodesk-like description are not sufficient proof of authenticity. When available, verify the file’s location, Autodesk digital signature, and provenance.

Fix 4: Resolve a missing dependency

The message “The specified module could not be found” can be misleading. Windows may be reporting that a dependency required by ac1st17.dll is missing, even when ac1st17.dll itself is present.

First check the application directory:

  1. Right-click the Autodesk program’s shortcut.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Open the Shortcut tab and note the Target path.
  4. Browse to that installation directory.
  5. Confirm whether ac1st17.dll is present beside the application or in its expected Autodesk subfolder.
  6. Do not move it to a Windows system directory.

If the error names msvcr80.dll, msvcp80.dll, an MFC file, or another runtime component, install or repair the matching Microsoft Visual C++ runtime from Microsoft’s official download pages. Older Autodesk software may require a legacy runtime such as Visual C++ 2005 SP1. A current Visual C++ v14 package alone may not satisfy software built against an older runtime.

For a 32-bit Autodesk application, the x86 runtime is generally the relevant package even when Windows itself is 64-bit. Install the package specified by the Autodesk installer or application documentation rather than installing every architecture at random.

After installing the runtime:

  1. Restart Windows.
  2. Open the Autodesk application.
  3. Repeat the operation that produced the error.

If the message still names ac1st17.dll, repair the Autodesk product. Do not assume that installing Visual C++ replaces the Autodesk DLL.

Fix 5: Check optional Windows components

Some older Autodesk installers depend on Windows components that may be disabled.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures and press Enter.
  3. Review the available .NET Framework entries.
  4. Enable only the component required by the Autodesk installer or product documentation.
  5. Select OK.
  6. Allow Windows to download or install the component if prompted.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Run the Autodesk repair or reinstall again.

Do not enable unrelated legacy components simply because the error contains “DLL.” If the installer reports a specific .NET Framework requirement, follow that requirement. Windows Features will not independently restore ac1st17.dll.

Fix 6: Update a driver only if the failure points there

A graphics or storage driver is not the normal source of a missing Autodesk application DLL. Driver work is appropriate when the application opens but crashes while displaying drawings, when Device Manager reports a device problem, or when the issue began after a driver change.

Check Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Display adapters and Storage controllers.
  4. Look for a warning icon.
  5. Right-click the affected device and choose Properties.
  6. Open the Driver tab and review the provider, date, and status.
  7. Choose Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers.
  8. Restart Windows if a driver is installed.

For a graphics driver, also check the computer or graphics hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Avoid driver packages from unverified download sites.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manually hunting through hardware pages and checking dozens of driver versions is easy to get wrong. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required to repair the Autodesk DLL.

After updating, test Autodesk again. If the missing-file message is unchanged, return to product Repair or Reinstall rather than continuing to replace drivers.

Fix 7: Run DISM and System File Checker

These commands repair Windows component-store and protected Windows files. They are secondary here because ac1st17.dll is normally an Autodesk file, not a protected Windows resource.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows.
  3. Test the Autodesk application.

DISM should be run before SFC. A message that Windows repaired corrupted files confirms that Windows integrity work was performed, not that Autodesk’s DLL was restored. If SFC reports no integrity violations, the next step remains Autodesk Repair or Reinstall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeating SFC without identifying what changed rarely helps with a third-party application file. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows issues and show what needs attention, while repair actions are handled by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the Autodesk application remains the definitive fix for this file.

Fix 8: Use System Restore only after a recent change

System Restore is useful when the error started immediately after a driver, cleanup tool, update, or software installation and the Autodesk installer is unavailable.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type rstrui.exe and press Enter.
  3. Select Next.
  4. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  5. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  6. Confirm the restore point.
  7. Save open work and select Finish.

System Restore can remove recently installed applications or drivers. Create a current backup first. After Windows restarts, test Autodesk. If the error remains, reinstall the affected product from verified media.

Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this error

regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary Autodesk runtime library is normally loaded by the application from its product directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run commands such as:

regsvr32 ac1st17.dll

unless Autodesk documentation for the exact product explicitly tells you to do so. A registration error does not repair a missing file, a mismatched build, or a missing dependency. Registering the wrong DLL can also create misleading troubleshooting results.

Why random DLL downloads are unsafe

A DLL download sites site may provide:

  • the wrong Autodesk release;
  • the wrong architecture;
  • a modified or unsigned file;
  • a file that conflicts with related ObjectDBX binaries;
  • malware disguised as a familiar filename.

It may also place the file in the wrong directory and hide the real cause, such as an incomplete service pack or missing runtime. Use the original Autodesk installer, Autodesk Account, verified deployment image, or genuine product media instead. Never copy ac1st17.dll into both System32 and SysWOW64.

If the error remains after reinstalling

Work through this final checklist:

  • Confirm the executable named in the error and identify its parent product.
  • Check the product directory for the file without moving it.
  • Verify the Autodesk installer matches the product, release, edition, and update level.
  • Review Windows Security Protection history.
  • Look for a missing dependency rather than assuming the named DLL is absent.
  • Check Autodesk installer logs for failed file extraction.
  • Test without recently installed add-ins.
  • Check whether a particular drawing triggers the crash.
  • Run DISM followed by SFC if Windows corruption is suspected.
  • Check disk health if files continue disappearing.
  • Perform a documented clean Autodesk uninstall, restart, and reinstall only from verified media.

A crash that mentions ac1st17.dll is not always a missing-file problem. An incompatible add-in, damaged drawing, application defect, or memory problem can produce a similar failure.

FAQ

Is ac1st17.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an Autodesk application DLL associated with ObjectDBX and AutoCAD-family or RealDWG-based software. Windows does not normally restore it through SFC.
