Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before changing anything, record:
- The exact error message, including whether it says “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “specified module could not be found”
- The program or Windows component that shows the message
- Whether the problem began after a Windows update, cleanup utility, antivirus action, malware incident, or disk problem
- Whether you are using Windows 10, Windows 11, or an older Windows installation
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
Do not download uxsms.dll from a DLL archive. The file is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service, not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, .NET assembly, or normal game dependency. Microsoft describes Desktop Window Manager as the Windows service responsible for desktop composition and visual effects in its Desktop Window Manager documentation.
What uxsms.dll is and where it belongs
uxsms.dll is associated with the Windows service named UxSms, whose display name is Desktop Window Manager Session Manager. Older Windows installations, especially Windows Vista and Windows 7, normally placed it here:

Public file metadata identifies the product as Microsoft Windows Operating System, the company as Microsoft Corporation, the description as Microsoft User Experience Session Management Service, and the internal name as UxSms.dll.
That does not mean every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation must contain the same standalone file or service. The UxSms service model changed after Windows 7, so absence alone is not proof of corruption on a newer build. Check the Windows version and the program producing the error before attempting replacement.

On older systems, Microsoft documentation uses the UxSms service name in troubleshooting commands. Those commands are relevant to a narrow Windows 7 black-screen workaround, not as a general fix for a missing DLL.
Fix 1: Install pending Windows updates and restart
A damaged or incomplete servicing operation can leave protected Windows files unavailable. Update Windows before running repair commands.
Windows 11
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Test the program again.
Windows 10
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Open Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install the available updates.
- Restart and test the affected program.
If Windows Update reports an error, use Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooter. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a replacement DLL.
Fix 2: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair sequence for a genuinely missing or damaged Windows component. Run the commands in this order from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. This can take time and may appear to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the original program.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies. Microsoft documents this sequence in Using System File Checker in Windows.
Success usually means SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. If the program still reports uxsms.dll, restart once more and repeat the test before making other changes.

Manually hunting through Windows versions and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. If DISM says that the source files could not be found, do not download uxsms.dll separately. Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation as a repair source, for example:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess
The source must match the installed operating-system version. An unmatched source can fail or restore unsuitable files. Microsoft’s DISM servicing guidance also explains where to look for servicing failures, including CBS.log.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software may remove or quarantine a Windows file after detecting suspicious activity, or malware may have damaged the installation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
uxsms.dll. - Check the original path, detection name, and action taken.
- Do not restore the file solely because an application says it is missing.
- Run a full scan with Microsoft Defender.
Restore a quarantined file only when the original path, Microsoft signature, and security-product evidence support that decision. If the file was found outside the expected Windows location, treat it as suspicious. A DLL with the correct filename in an application folder is not automatically genuine.

Fix 4: Verify the path, signature, and architecture
On an older Windows installation, inspect the file rather than replacing it.

- Open File Explorer.
- Enter this path in the address bar:
C:WindowsSystem32
- Search for
uxsms.dll. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer details and signature status.
- On the Details tab, compare the product and description information.
You can also check the signature from an elevated PowerShell window:
Get-AuthenticodeSignature "$env:windirSystem32uxsms.dll"
A valid Microsoft signature supports legitimacy, but it does not prove that the file belongs on every Windows version. If the file is in a temporary folder, a download directory, or an unexpected application directory, do not register or run it.

On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains 64-bit system components and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit components. Copying a 32-bit or 64-bit file into the wrong location can create additional failures.
Fix 5: Check the affected program and its compatibility
If only one old application reports uxsms.dll, the application may be expecting a Windows 7-era component that is not present in the same form on a newer Windows release.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version only if the application documentation requires it.
- Select Run this program as an administrator temporarily for testing.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Start the program again.
If the program remains broken, download its installer only from the software developer’s official source and reinstall or repair the application. Do not place uxsms.dll in the application folder. A program-specific error does not justify installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET unless the error names a missing file from that particular runtime.
Fix 6: Check graphics and related drivers
Desktop composition problems can appear alongside outdated or damaged graphics drivers, especially on older Windows installations.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a clean repair, obtain the driver from the computer or graphics-card manufacturer. If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the adapter’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
Identifying the correct driver manually can mean hunting through hardware models and comparing versions. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies; installing detected drivers is handled by the full version, and it is not required for repairing uxsms.dll.
Should you run regsvr32?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not repair ordinary Windows system-file corruption, restore the component store, or recreate a missing protected file. Running it against uxsms.dll is likely to produce an error such as a missing registration entry point.
Use DISM and SFC instead. Microsoft explains the purpose and limitations of Regsvr32 and its common error messages.

If DISM and SFC cannot repair the file
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files but could not fix some of them:
- Restart Windows.
- Install pending updates.
- Run DISM again.
- Run SFC again.
- Review the servicing result and
CBS.log. - Check the drive for broader filesystem or storage problems.
A failing drive can repeatedly corrupt restored files. Back up important data before deeper recovery work.

- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
On supported Windows 11 installations, Microsoft also provides Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings when the option is available. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for the applicable choices.
What not to do
- Do not download
uxsms.dllfrom a random DLL website. - Do not copy a file from another computer without matching Windows version, architecture, language, and signature.
- Do not place a downloaded DLL in
System32or an application directory. - Do not disable the
UxSmsservice as a general repair. - Do not install unrelated Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET packages because a Windows DLL is missing.
- Do not assume that a
specified module could not be foundmessage means the named file itself is absent. A dependency can also be missing.
FAQ
Is uxsms.dll malware?
The legitimate file is a Microsoft Windows system component. Verify its location and Microsoft digital signature. A copy with the same name in a temporary or application folder may be unrelated and should be scanned.
Does Windows 11 need uxsms.dll?
Not necessarily. The older UxSms service model changed after Windows 7, so Windows 11 may not contain the same standalone file or service. Diagnose the exact error and Windows build instead of treating absence alone as corruption.
Is uxsms.dll part of a third-party program?
No. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service. A program may expose the error while attempting to use an unavailable Windows component, but that does not make the DLL a normal application dependency.
Can I fix it by registering the DLL?
Normally no. regsvr32 is not a general Windows repair tool and is generally irrelevant to this system DLL.

Repair Windows first, then update or reinstall the program from its official installer. The application may be expecting an older Windows service architecture. Do not copy a replacement DLL into its installation folder.
Will DISM and SFC always fix the problem?
No. They are the correct first repair for Windows corruption, but they cannot resolve every case, including failing storage, malware, an unsuitable legacy application, or broader Windows damage. Use the recovery options above if the repair results remain unsuccessful.
