acsetup.dll is an AutoCAD setup component from Autodesk, not a Windows system DLL. If acsetup.dll is missing or cannot be loaded, repair or reinstall the affected AutoCAD-family product from its official Autodesk installer instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
The correct fix depends on when the message appears:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- During installation: the installer may be incomplete, damaged, blocked, or incorrectly extracted.
- During repair or update: an older Autodesk installation may be corrupted.
- When launching AutoCAD or DWG TrueView: installed setup files or related product components may be damaged.
- After antivirus activity: Windows Security may have quarantined the file.
Do not copy acsetup.dll into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a random application folder. That can create a version mismatch and does not restore the Autodesk installer state that the program expects.

acsetup.dll is described as an AutoCAD component developed by Autodesk, Inc. Autodesk installation logs show it being loaded from temporary Setup directories and used for installer callbacks such as platform checks. Older installation logs also associate it with hardware checks and prerequisite installation.

It normally appears in a location similar to:
C:Users<user>AppDataLocalTemp_AIxxxx.tmpSetupAcSetup.dll
C:Program FilesAutodesk<product>SetupAcSetup.dll
It does not belong in the standard Windows DLL folders. Public catalog records list observed 32-bit versions, including 23.0.46.0 and 19.0.55.0, but these records are not a complete Autodesk version list. The architecture data published for this file is not consistent, so match the file supplied by the exact Autodesk product installer rather than relying on a download-site listing.
Fix 1: Restart Windows and rerun the official installer
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
If the error appeared while installing, updating, or repairing AutoCAD, begin with a restart. A pending Windows update, locked temporary file, or unfinished prerequisite installation can prevent AcSetup.dll from being extracted or loaded.
- Save your work and close AutoCAD, Autodesk Access, and other installers.
- Open Start > Power > Restart.
- After Windows starts, open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart again if Windows requests it.
- Sign in to your Autodesk account using a browser.
- Download the exact product and release you own.
- Prefer the official Download or Direct Download method when available.
- Do not reuse a partially downloaded installer or an old temporary extraction folder.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard to completion.
If the installer now completes, the missing file was probably caused by an incomplete extraction, damaged download, or pending restart. If the same temporary _AI*.tmpSetupAcSetup.dll path appears again, continue with the antivirus and clean-download checks below.

Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Security software can remove or block an installer component. Do not immediately disable protection or restore the file. First confirm what was detected and where it came from.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand entries recorded around the time the AutoCAD installation failed.
- Record the detection name and the full file path.
- Check whether the path points to the Autodesk installer or to an unrelated folder.
Microsoft documents the Protection History workflow here.
Only restore or allow the file if all of the following are true:
- The installer came directly from Autodesk.
- The file path is inside the expected Autodesk installation or temporary setup directory.
- The detection clearly concerns the legitimate installer.
- You have checked the installer source and its digital signature.
If you cannot verify those points, remove the failed installer and download a fresh copy from Autodesk instead. Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion for a DLL copied from another source.

After confirming the installer is legitimate, temporarily pause only the security product’s installation blocking feature if your organization allows it, run the official installer, and then re-enable protection. On a business-managed computer, ask the administrator to review the detection rather than changing security settings yourself.

Fix 3: Repair AutoCAD when the repair option is available
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
The traditional repair workflow applies to AutoCAD 2021 and earlier.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, select the affected AutoCAD product.
- Select Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Follow the prompts and allow the process to replace missing or damaged files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch AutoCAD and test the operation that previously failed.
If Repair completes but the error remains, repeat the same process and choose Reinstall when available. Reinstalling replaces the product files rather than attempting to preserve every existing component.
For AutoCAD 2022 and later, the newer Autodesk installer generally does not provide the old repair workflow. In that case, uninstall the affected product and install it again using a fresh official installer.
A repair is successful when AutoCAD launches or the setup operation completes without referring to acsetup.dll. If the error points to a temporary _AI*.tmp directory, repair may not be enough because the current installer package itself is probably damaged.
Fix 4: Uninstall and reinstall the exact Autodesk product
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes
Use this route when AutoCAD will not repair, the product is only partly installed, or the error appears under Program FilesAutodesk.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the affected AutoCAD product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the Autodesk removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove only related Autodesk components that you recognize and that the Autodesk uninstall process identifies as part of the failed product.
- Restart again if requested.
- Download a fresh installer from your Autodesk account.
- Save it to a local drive, not a network share or removable drive.
- Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation before opening other installers or security utilities.
Do not manually delete registry keys. Do not remove unrelated Autodesk products unless the official cleanup procedure specifically requires it. Manual registry editing can leave the product in a worse state and can damage other Autodesk installations.
If ordinary uninstall fails, use Autodesk’s documented clean-uninstall procedure or Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. The goal is to remove the failed product’s installation state, not simply delete one DLL.

A clean reinstall is the most reliable fix when:
- The file is missing under
C:Program FilesAutodesk.... - Repair reports that it cannot find the installation source.
- The installer repeatedly stops at the same stage.
- Several Autodesk components show as installed but will not launch.
- A previous Autodesk installation was interrupted.
Fix 5: Check permissions, the user profile, and network restrictions
Time needed: 10 to 25 minutes
Autodesk installers can fail when the current Windows profile has restricted permissions, the installer is running from a network location, or endpoint security blocks temporary files.

Try these checks in order:
- Copy the installer to a local folder such as
C:AutodeskInstall. - Right-click the installer and select Properties.
- If an Unblock checkbox appears on the General tab, select it and choose Apply.
- Right-click the installer again and select Run as administrator.
- Disconnect from a VPN temporarily if your organization permits it.
- Avoid running the setup from a network share.
- Confirm that the system drive has sufficient free space for extraction.
- Close download managers, cleanup utilities, and other installers.
- Restart Windows and try again.
If the installation fails only under one Windows profile, test from a new local administrator account:
- Open Settings > Accounts > Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Choose I don’t have this person’s sign-in information.
- Select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
- Create the account.
- Select the account, choose Change account type, and set it to Administrator.
- Sign in to that account.
- Run the official Autodesk installer again.
If installation succeeds there, the original profile or its permissions are likely damaged or restricted. Move personal files to the working profile rather than copying Autodesk DLLs between accounts.
Fix 6: Install the prerequisites supplied for the Autodesk release
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes
AutoCAD-family installers may install or invoke prerequisites such as Microsoft Visual C++ components or DirectX components. A failed prerequisite can stop setup before AcSetup.dll is available, but reinstalling Visual C++ alone does not normally replace acsetup.dll.
Use the prerequisites bundled with, or specified for, the exact Autodesk release. If you need Microsoft Visual C++ packages, use Microsoft’s official supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
For a typical prerequisite repair:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++.
- Select the relevant package.
- Choose Modify if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Autodesk installer again as administrator.
Some applications use both 32-bit and 64-bit components. Installing both Microsoft package architectures can be appropriate when the Autodesk release requires them, but it is not a reason to place acsetup.dll in both Windows system folders.
Fix 7: Check device drivers only when the error involves a platform or hardware check
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes
A driver update is not the normal replacement for a missing acsetup.dll. However, Autodesk setup can perform platform and hardware checks, so investigate graphics or chipset drivers when the installer specifically reports an unsupported device, graphics initialization problem, or hardware check failure.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Properties > Driver.
- Note the provider, date, and version.
- Select Update Driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat the check under System devices for relevant chipset entries.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Autodesk installer again.
Do not use a driver update as a substitute for reinstalling the Autodesk product when the message specifically says acsetup.dll is missing.

Reinstalling the exact Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for a missing Autodesk setup component.
Fix 8: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 40 minutes
DISM and System File Checker are not first-line repairs for an Autodesk-owned DLL. Use them when multiple unrelated Windows applications report damaged system files, Windows Update is malfunctioning, or the Autodesk installer fails alongside other programs.

Microsoft provides the official DISM and SFC instructions.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and then retry AutoCAD. If it reports that it could not repair everything, review the result and continue with Autodesk cleanup rather than repeatedly running the same command without a new diagnosis.

Fix 9: Use System Restore only after ordinary Autodesk repair fails
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
System Restore is a secondary recovery step, not a normal fix for one missing Autodesk component. Consider it only when the error began after a known system change, a restore point predates the failure, and clean Autodesk reinstall does not work.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, installed programs, and settings. It does not normally remove personal documents, but it can remove applications and updates installed after the selected restore point.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the AutoCAD problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the applications and updates that may be removed.
- Select Next > Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart and complete the operation.
- Test AutoCAD.
Do not use System Restore to replace acsetup.dll from an unknown source. If malware or an untrusted installer may have caused the problem, perform a malware scan and reinstall AutoCAD from Autodesk after restoring Windows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy downloading acsetup.dll is the wrong fix
Random DLL download pages create several risks:
- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- The version may not match your AutoCAD release.
- The architecture may be wrong.
- Required dependent files may still be missing.
- Autodesk installation metadata, licensing components, and registry state remain damaged.
- Copying the file into System32 or SysWOW64 can affect unrelated programs.
- A copied file may appear to fix one message while leaving the installation unusable.
Autodesk does not publish acsetup.dll as a standalone Windows download. The safe source is the official Autodesk installer for the exact product and release. If antivirus removed the file, verify the installer first rather than downloading a replacement.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point, commonly COM components. There is no evidence that acsetup.dll is a self-registering COM server. Autodesk setup uses it as an installer component and callback source, so this command is generally irrelevant:
regsvr32 acsetup.dll
A “module failed to load” result from regsvr32 does not prove that Windows is missing a runtime. Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product instead.

Common causes and the matching fix
| What you find | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
Path contains _AI*.tmpSetup |
Incomplete extraction, damaged download, or security block | Delete the failed installer cache, download again from Autodesk, and run as administrator |
Path is under Program FilesAutodesk |
Corrupted installed product | Repair older releases or uninstall and reinstall newer releases |
| Protection History names the file | Antivirus quarantine or block | Verify the installer source and detection before restoring |
| Error follows a failed update | Partial Autodesk installation | Uninstall the affected release and perform a clean reinstall |
| Several Windows programs fail | Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Only one Windows profile fails | Profile or permission problem | Test with a new local administrator profile |
| Setup reports error 1603 | Broad installation failure | Check updates, permissions, security software, prerequisites, remnants, and logs |
| Installer reports hardware or platform failure | Environment or driver issue | Check system requirements and relevant Device Manager drivers |
The exact wording can vary. Messages may say that acsetup.dll could not be found, failed to load, is missing, or is corrupt. The path and the point in the installation are more useful than the wording alone.
Where to look for diagnostic details
When the repair steps fail, preserve the following before deleting anything:
- The complete error message.
- The full path shown in the error.
- The Autodesk product and release.
- Whether the failure occurred during installation, update, repair, or launch.
- The Windows Security detection name, if present.
- The Autodesk installation log.
- Any installer error code, including 1603.
- Recent Windows Update or security-software activity.
Open Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and checking Windows Logs > Application around the failure time. Look for entries from the installer, Windows Installer, application errors, or security software.
For a temporary setup path, focus on extraction and security software. For a Program FilesAutodesk path, focus on product corruption and clean reinstall. If every Autodesk release fails, test the new administrator profile and investigate organizational policy, proxy restrictions, endpoint security, and Windows health.
FAQ
Is acsetup.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Autodesk AutoCAD-family setup component. It should not be copied into System32 or SysWOW64.
Can I fix it by copying the DLL beside AutoCAD.exe?
Usually not. The file may need to match the exact Autodesk release and work with installer metadata, prerequisites, and other components. Reinstall the affected Autodesk product from its official source.
Does reinstalling Visual C++ fix acsetup.dll?
Not normally. Visual C++ may be a prerequisite for an Autodesk installation, but it does not usually replace this Autodesk-owned DLL. Use the prerequisite package required by the exact release, then repair or reinstall AutoCAD.
Should I run regsvr32?
No, not as a routine fix. acsetup.dll is used by Autodesk setup callbacks, and there is no evidence that it requires COM registration.
Does the 32-bit label mean I should install a 32-bit AutoCAD?
No. Public catalog metadata is not a complete Autodesk compatibility record. Match the product, release, and installer supplied by Autodesk rather than choosing an architecture from a DLL listing.
