msports.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component, and its absence or corruption can stop Windows from installing serial, parallel, modem, scanner, or USB-to-serial devices. The safest fix is to repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then repair the affected device driver if the error appears only during one installation.
What this file actually does
msports.dll is called Ports Class Installer. It is part of Microsoft Windows Operating System, published by Microsoft Corporation, rather than a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, .NET assembly, or game-specific library.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Windows uses it when setting up and configuring devices that rely on ports, including:
- Serial and parallel ports
- COM-port hardware
- USB-to-serial adapters
- Modems
- Scanners
- Radios
- Industrial-control equipment
- Older specialist hardware
Microsoft documentation identifies Msports.dll as the DLL that implements COM-port database functions. Windows SetupAPI documentation also shows it being loaded as the Ports class installer. Its functions include port-class installation, serial-port property pages, parallel-port property pages, and COM-port database operations.

That explains why a hardware driver can trigger an msports.dll error even though the file is not the manufacturer’s driver. The vendor installer asks Windows to create or configure a port, and Windows then loads its own Ports class installer.
The file is normally protected as part of Windows. On 64-bit Windows, native system components are generally stored in %WINDIR%System32, while 32-bit components used through WOW64 are generally stored in %WINDIR%SysWOW64. Do not treat those folder names as proof that a particular copy is correct. Windows release, architecture, servicing state, and component integrity all matter.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| “The program can’t start because msports.dll is missing from your computer” | A missing, quarantined, or damaged Windows component, or an application making an incorrect dependency request | Windows Update, DISM, then SFC |
| “msports.dll was not found” | Windows or an application cannot locate the required component | DISM and SFC, then inspect the application |
| “Windows could not load the installer for Ports” | Windows cannot load the Ports class installer during device setup | DISM, SFC, and the device-driver check |
C:WindowsSystem32msports.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error |
Corrupt file, wrong architecture, wrong build, or damaged dependencies | Do not replace the file manually; run DISM and SFC |
| “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b)” | Architecture mismatch or broader Windows/application corruption | Repair Windows, then repair the affected application |
| The error appears only for one USB-to-serial device | Incorrect, obsolete, or damaged vendor driver, defective device, or USB connection | Test another port and repair the vendor driver |
| The error appears only in one application or game | The application may have an incorrect dependency or its own damaged files | Repair or reinstall that application |
Windows Security shows msports.dll in Protection History |
Antivirus quarantine or a suspicious replacement | Verify the path, signature, and detection before restoring anything |
The message alone does not prove that the file is physically absent. A corrupt copy, an architecture mismatch, a damaged Windows component store, an incompatible device driver, or antivirus quarantine can produce similar symptoms.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates first
Windows Update can replace damaged protected components and deliver compatibility fixes for device installation.
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if the update screen does not insist on it.
- Retry the application or device installation.
If Windows Update itself fails, continue with DISM. Microsoft explains that DISM can use Windows Update as a repair source, but a broken update subsystem may require matching installation media instead.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the main repair sequence for a missing, corrupted, or bad-image msports.dll error. Run DISM first, then SFC. Reversing the order can leave SFC without a healthy component source.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Leave the window open until the operation finishes.
A successful result says that the operation completed successfully. DISM can take time and may appear to pause at a percentage. Do not close the window merely because progress seems slow.

Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the device or application again.
SFC may report one of several outcomes:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected files were not found to be corrupted. If the error remains, investigate the driver, application, architecture, or hardware.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and retry the failed operation.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more. If it still cannot repair the files, use a matching Windows installation source or move to Windows recovery.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: restart and try again from an elevated Command Prompt. Persistent failure may indicate broader Windows or storage corruption.
For a matching repair source, use genuine Windows installation media that corresponds to the installed edition and build. The command format is:

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the Windows repair source. Do not use a random extracted DLL as the source.
When SFC reports unrepaired corruption, its details are recorded in the Component-Based Servicing log, commonly called the CBS log. To extract SFC entries to a readable file on the desktop, run:

Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork when you are repeatedly hunting for damaged Windows components and cannot tell what changed; its free scan shows what it identifies, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional, and the DISM/SFC procedure remains the official Windows repair path.
Fix 3: Repair the affected device driver
If the error appears when connecting a serial adapter, modem, scanner, radio, printer, or industrial device, the vendor driver may be the real problem. Windows may be healthy while the device installer is incompatible with the current Windows version or architecture.
Check the device in Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT).
- Also check Other devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, and Modems if the device is not listed under Ports.
- Look for a yellow warning symbol or an entry that appears only when the device is connected.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
Do not assume that a driver with a newer-looking date is compatible. Obtain the driver from the hardware manufacturer and match it to the installed Windows version and architecture.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Update the driver
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- If you already downloaded a compatible driver from the hardware manufacturer, choose Browse my computer for drivers.
- Point Windows to the folder containing the driver files.
- Complete the installation and restart if prompted.
Remove and reinstall the device
If updating does not help:
- Disconnect the device.
- In Device Manager, right-click its entry.
- Choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you have a known-good replacement driver or Windows can safely reinstall one.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the device directly to the computer rather than through a hub.
- Install the manufacturer’s compatible driver if Windows does not do so automatically.
Test a different USB port. If possible, test a known-good cable or another known-good device of the same type. If only one adapter fails while other devices install normally, the evidence points more strongly to the adapter, its driver, or its compatibility than to msports.dll.
Outbyte Driver Updater can make the manual process easier when you are comparing multiple hardware drivers and guessing which one is stale; its free scan identifies reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Verify every suggested driver against the hardware manufacturer’s compatibility information.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Architecture problems commonly produce bad-image messages and error 0xc000007b.
There are three situations to distinguish:
- 32-bit Windows: it uses 32-bit system components.
- 64-bit Windows: it uses native 64-bit system components and also supports 32-bit applications through WOW64.
- 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows: Windows redirects many system-file requests to the 32-bit system environment.
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is normally the native 64-bit system directory despite its name. SysWOW64 holds many 32-bit system components. This is a Windows compatibility design, not an instruction to copy files between the folders.
To check Windows architecture:
- Right-click Start.
- Select System.
- Find System type under device or Windows specifications.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not copy msports.dll from another computer, from a different Windows release, or from a different architecture. A copied file can have incompatible dependencies, a different servicing state, a mismatched export set, or an invalid signature. DISM and SFC are designed to restore the correct component for the installed Windows image.

If only one 32-bit application reports the error while Windows can install and use the device normally, repair or reinstall that application first. The application may be incorrectly requesting the Windows component or may contain damaged files of its own.
Fix 5: Review antivirus quarantine safely
A security product can quarantine a genuine file, but a file outside the normal Windows directory or without a valid Microsoft signature may also be a suspicious replacement.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries that mention
msports.dll. - Check the reported file path, detection name, action, and date.
- Do not restore the file merely because the filename matches.
A legitimate-looking file should be in an expected Windows system location and have a valid Microsoft signature. Run a Windows Security scan, and use Microsoft recovery or Windows servicing if the file is missing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Restore or allow a quarantined file only after verifying that the detection is demonstrably false. Restoring a threat can cause it to be detected again, and antivirus restoration is not a substitute for repairing Windows.
If the file is located in a user-writable folder, a temporary directory, an application folder that should not contain it, or another unexpected location, do not copy it into System32. Scan the system and investigate the source.
Why downloading msports.dll is the wrong repair
Random DLL download pages are a poor solution for this error. The file may contain malware, belong to another Windows build, use the wrong architecture, lack a valid Microsoft signature, or depend on other files that are also missing. Even a genuine-looking replacement may be overwritten by servicing or fail because the Windows component store remains damaged.
There is no current official Microsoft msports.dll redistributable or standalone DLL download package. Safe sources are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- Matching Windows installation media
- Windows recovery
- A compatible Windows device-driver package from the hardware manufacturer
Do not copy a DLL from another computer or ask a third party to send one. That approach can turn a repairable Windows servicing problem into an architecture or security problem.
Why regsvr32 msports.dll normally does not help
regsvr32 is used for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point, normally DllRegisterServer. msports.dll is a device class installer, not a typical self-registering COM component. Its role is to participate in Windows device setup through class-installer mechanisms.

is therefore not the normal repair method. It may produce an error stating that the module was loaded but the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove that the file is missing.
Use DISM and SFC for Windows component corruption, and use Device Manager plus the manufacturer’s driver for device-installation failures.
Fix 6: Repair Windows when servicing still fails
If Windows Update, DISM, SFC, and driver repair do not resolve the problem, choose the recovery method that matches when the failure began.
Reinstall the current Windows version through Windows Update
On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings where the option is available.
Use System Restore
If the error began after a driver, update, or software change:
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and confirm the restore.
System Restore does not replace a personal backup. Save current work and understand which applications or drivers may be rolled back.

As a later option, use genuine Windows installation media from within Windows and select Keep personal files and apps when offered. This repairs Windows while preserving the existing installation, but read every screen carefully before proceeding.
Back up important files first. If the option to keep apps and files is not offered, stop and verify that the installation media matches the installed Windows edition and architecture.
Inspect SetupAPI logs for device-installation failures
When the error appears only during hardware installation, Windows setup logs can show whether the failure involves the Ports class installer or the vendor driver.

Windows Features are usually not the answer
Windows Features can enable or disable optional components such as legacy frameworks and system utilities, but msports.dll is a Windows device-setup component, not an optional Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET feature.
Do not enable random features in the hope that they will restore it. If a particular application requires an optional Windows feature, follow that application’s documented requirement separately. For this file, Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Device Manager, and Windows recovery are the relevant repair paths.
Diagnostic checklist
Use this order:
- Restart Windows and install pending updates.
- Run elevated DISM:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Run elevated SFC:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Restart and retry the application or device.
- If only one device fails, inspect Device Manager and reinstall its compatible manufacturer driver.
- If only one application fails, repair or reinstall that application.
- Check Windows Security Protection History without blindly restoring a quarantined file.
- Confirm Windows architecture and stop using copied DLLs.
- Use System Restore, Windows 11 repair reinstall, or in-place repair if servicing cannot restore the component.
- Investigate disk health, malware, or hardware failure if corruption returns.
Frequently asked questions
Is msports.dll a virus?
The genuine file is a Microsoft Windows component. A file with that name in an unexpected directory, without a valid Microsoft signature, or flagged by Windows Security requires investigation. Filename alone is not proof of authenticity.
Can I download msports.dll separately?
No official Microsoft standalone redistributable is provided for this component. Restore it through Windows servicing, Windows Update, matching installation media, or recovery.
Does installing Visual C++ repair this error?
There is no verified connection between Visual C++ redistributables and repairing the Windows Ports class installer. Use DISM and SFC instead.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally no. msports.dll is used as a device class installer and is not repaired by ordinary COM DLL registration.
Why does a USB-to-serial driver mention a Windows DLL?
The vendor driver uses Windows device-installation infrastructure. Windows loads its Ports class installer while configuring the device, so a Windows component error can appear during a vendor-driver installation.

Run DISM first or again, then run SFC after restarting. If the result persists, use a matching repair source, inspect the CBS log, and consider Windows recovery or an in-place repair.
What if the error appears only in one game or application?
Repair or reinstall that application first. If Windows can install and use ports normally, do not assume msports.dll is missing from Windows.
What if only one physical device fails?
Try another USB port, cable, or known-good device. Then focus on the manufacturer’s driver, device compatibility, and possible hardware failure rather than replacing msports.dll.
When should I seek deeper repair?
Escalate when DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, corruption returns, multiple Windows components break, the disk reports errors, or the file is repeatedly quarantined. Those signs point to broader Windows, storage, security, or hardware trouble rather than an isolated DLL problem.
