If acshellextension.dll is missing, repair or reinstall the Autodesk product that installed it rather than downloading a replacement DLL. This error usually appears when Windows uses Autodesk’s DWG launcher to open a .dwg file by double-click, while the same drawing may still open from inside AutoCAD.

AcShellExtension.dll is a genuine Autodesk component used by the AutoCAD DWG common shell-extension handler. It belongs to Autodesk’s DWG-opening and Windows Explorer integration, not to Windows itself.

AutoCAD products are directly associated with this component. DWG TrueView participates in the same Autodesk DWG-launcher ecosystem, although Autodesk does not publish a complete DLL and version matrix covering every release.

The file is not a Windows system component. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Some third-party catalogs list a 32-bit build with version 22.0.50.0 and a size of 0.18 MB. That information is not a universal Autodesk specification, so do not use it to choose a replacement file.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product
This is the safest and most likely solution because it restores the DLL, adjacent Autodesk files, launcher configuration, and product registration together.
AutoCAD 2021 and earlier
- Close AutoCAD, DWG TrueView, and other Autodesk applications.
- Press
Win+R. - Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select the affected AutoCAD product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change, Modify, or the equivalent Autodesk maintenance option.
- Select Repair or Reinstall.
- Choose Repair first.
- Restart Windows when the repair finishes.
- Double-click a DWG file.
A successful repair should allow the drawing to open through the normal Windows association. Confirm that this file now exists:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAutodesk SharedAcShellExAcShellExtension.dll
If Repair completes but the error remains, repeat the process and choose Reinstall.
AutoCAD 2022 and later
Autodesk’s newer installation framework does not provide the older Repair option. Use a complete uninstall and reinstall instead.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Finish the removal process and restart Windows.
- Download the same product from your Autodesk Account or its official Autodesk product page.
- Install it using an administrator account if Windows requests elevation.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test a DWG double-click.
For subscription products, sign in to Autodesk Account, open All Products and Services, select the product and version, choose the language and Windows platform, then select Install, Download, or Direct Download.
If the installation is severely damaged, use Autodesk’s clean-uninstall procedure only after backing up customizations and confirming that removing Autodesk licensing data and other Autodesk products is acceptable. A clean uninstall removes residual files, registry data, and licensing information, so it is more disruptive than a normal uninstall.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove or block a legitimate Autodesk file, particularly after an update or an installation that changed the file.

Windows Security
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand recent detections.
- Inspect the detected file path and name.
- Restore the file only when it came from the official Autodesk installation and the installation is trustworthy.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the DWG association again.
Microsoft notes that a restored file may be detected again. Do not blindly restore a file simply because its name matches AcShellExtension.dll.
If Autodesk’s folder is repeatedly blocked, ask your administrator or security team about a narrowly scoped exclusion for:

Avoid excluding the entire system drive or the whole Program Files directory. After restoring or allowing the file, reinstalling the Autodesk product is still preferable because quarantine may have removed related files or registration data.
Fix 3: Confirm the file and restore the DWG association
If the DLL is present, the problem may be a stale Windows association pointing to an old Autodesk installation.
- Open File Explorer.
- Browse to:

- Select the launcher.
- Enable the option to always use the selected app for
.dwgfiles, if shown. - Open the drawing.
If this fixes double-clicking, the DLL itself was not necessarily missing. Windows was probably calling a removed or mismatched Autodesk launcher.
When several AutoCAD or DWG TrueView versions are installed, select the launcher belonging to the product you actually want Windows to use. If the association changes back or fails again, uninstall unused Autodesk versions or reinstall the active product so Autodesk can rebuild its registration.
Fix 4: Use Autodesk’s attached file only as a controlled exception
Autodesk’s support article for this specific missing-DLL error provides an attached AcShellExtension.dll and describes placing it in the AcShellEx folder. This is the only reasonable manual-copy route.

Before copying anything:
- Confirm that the installed product is AutoCAD, an AutoCAD-based product, or an appropriate Autodesk DWG application.

- Check the file’s digital signature in Properties > Digital Signatures.
- Compare the file’s architecture with the Autodesk installation that invokes it.
- Copy it into the documented folder.
- Restart Windows.
- Test a DWG double-click.
Manual copying may restore the immediate missing file message but still leave missing dependencies, COM registration, or a broken launcher. If the error changes to “specified module could not be found,” reinstall the complete Autodesk product instead.
Never download this DLL from a random DLL catalog. The file may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to another Autodesk release, or simply fail because the installation around it is damaged.
Fix 5: Do not install unrelated runtimes first
AcShellExtension.dll is owned by Autodesk. It is not a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package, DirectX component, or .NET file.
Microsoft runtime packages use names such as:
vc_redist.x86.exe
vc_redist.x64.exe
vc_redist.arm64.exe
Install or repair one of those only when the complete error identifies a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. Installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without that evidence will not normally restore the Autodesk DLL.
If the error says that AcShellExtension.dll exists but “contains an error” or that a “specified module could not be found,” repair Autodesk first. The named DLL can be present while one of its dependencies is damaged.
Fix 6: Repair broader Windows corruption with DISM and SFC
System File Checker and DISM do not normally recreate a third-party Autodesk DLL. They are useful when Windows corruption is also affecting installers, permissions, or application loading.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:

sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Autodesk repair or reinstall.
If either command reports corruption it could not repair, do not keep repeating the same commands. Return to the Autodesk installer, because Windows servicing cannot substitute for the product’s own files.

Fix 7: Treat driver and Explorer problems separately
A graphics-driver reinstall is not a normal fix for a missing Autodesk shell-extension DLL. Consider drivers only if Event Viewer or the symptoms identify a separate Explorer, graphics, or display-driver failure.
For a genuine driver problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Explorer and DWG opening.
If the issue began immediately after a driver update, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when that button is available.

If AutoCAD opens normally but File Explorer crashes or restarts when browsing DWG files, the Autodesk shell handler may be loading and failing rather than simply being absent.
Use Autodesk repair or reinstall first. As a diagnostic step, an administrator can temporarily disable the Autodesk shell handler using an appropriate enterprise management or shell-extension troubleshooting method. Do not delete arbitrary CLSID entries or registry keys.
If Explorer becomes stable after the handler is disabled, reinstall the affected Autodesk product and test again. Avoid leaving the handler disabled permanently if you need DWG previews, associations, or Explorer integration.
Does regsvr32 fix this DLL?
Usually, no. regsvr32 cannot restore a missing file, and Autodesk does not prescribe it as the general fix for this error.

Last resort: System Restore
Use System Restore only when the problem began immediately after a recent installation or update and Autodesk reinstall is unavailable or unsuccessful.

- Start the restore.
- Let Windows restart.
- Test the DWG file.
System Restore rolls back system settings and installed programs but does not normally remove personal files. It is not a substitute for obtaining the correct Autodesk installer.
What not to do
- Do not copy the DLL into
System32orSysWOW64merely because the error mentions Windows. - Do not replace it with a catalog copy based only on a version number or file size.
- Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET without a separate dependency error.
- Do not run
regsvr32against every DLL in the Autodesk folder. - Do not delete Autodesk registry keys to stop an Explorer crash.
- Do not restore a quarantined file without checking its origin and signature.
- Do not mix a 32-bit DLL with a 64-bit Autodesk installation, or the reverse.

Is acshellextension.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an Autodesk application component used by the DWG shell handler and launcher.
Why does AutoCAD open the file from inside the program?

Autodesk DWG TrueView uses the same DWG-launcher ecosystem, but Autodesk does not publish a complete DLL matrix for every release. Use the installer for the exact product and version you have installed.
What if the DLL exists but the error remains?
Check the full error text. A dependency may be missing, the file may be blocked, or Windows may be using an obsolete DWG association. Repair Autodesk, then point .dwg files to the correct AcLauncher.exe.
Can SFC repair it?
Not normally. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not the Autodesk-owned DLL. It can still help with broader Windows corruption affecting installation or loading.
What is the correct fix after an Autodesk update fails?
