The May 28, 2024 ruling was a default judgment, not a jury verdict after a contested trial. The court also awarded about $292,912 in attorneys’ fees and ordered EngineOwning UG to transfer the EngineOwning.to domain to Activision.
How much did Activision win in the Call of Duty cheating lawsuit?
The court awarded $14,465,600 in statutory damages, commonly rounded to $14.5 million, according to Bloomberg Law’s report on the May 28, 2024 ruling. Attorneys’ fees of approximately $292,912 were awarded separately, so they were additional to the damages figure. Bloomberg Law reported the judgment and remedies.
How did Activision calculate the damages?
Activision’s April 12, 2024 court filing described a calculation based on accounts it had disabled for cheating and its estimate of the share associated with U.S. users:
- 150,825 accounts: Activision said it had disabled this many accounts for cheating.
- 47.9% U.S. share: Activision estimated that portion of the disabled accounts was attributable to U.S. users.
- 72,328 estimated U.S. users/downloads: Applying that share produced the estimated U.S. figure used in the filing.
- $200 per estimated download: Activision multiplied 72,328 by $200, the minimum statutory-damages amount it invoked under the DMCA, to reach $14,465,600.
These were figures presented by Activision, which characterized the calculation as a conservative approximation. The filing does not establish that the court audited a precise sales ledger or independently verified 72,328 paid purchases. The $14,465,600 figure was sought in the filing and reported as awarded in the subsequent coverage. Activision’s April 12 filing, hosted on CourtListener.

Why did Activision sue EngineOwning?
Activision accused EngineOwning-affiliated defendants of marketing and selling software intended to let players cheat in Call of Duty. Its filing described tools that circumvented anti-cheat protections and spoofed hardware identifiers. Activision argued that the conduct violated federal and California law; these descriptions are the company’s allegations as presented in the case, not an independent technical assessment.
In describing the case, Activision’s filing characterized RICOCHET as an anti-cheat system designed to detect cheats and prevent cheaters from playing. That characterization is Activision’s, rather than an independent finding about the system’s effectiveness.

An earlier consent judgment
A separate, earlier consent judgment in the litigation permanently barred specified cheating-software activities. It should not be confused with the May 2024 default judgment or treated as an order applying to every defendant on identical terms. The case docket and filings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why was it a default judgment rather than a trial verdict?
Activision’s filing says many defendants initially appeared through counsel and moved to dismiss; the court denied that motion in April 2023. The defendants later stopped participating, and the case proceeded to default judgment. That procedural outcome is not the same as a jury weighing evidence and returning a verdict after a contested trial. The account and download figures therefore need to be understood as Activision’s estimates in its filing, rather than as findings from a jury trial.
