8 Best Handheld Gaming Consoles of 2025, Tested and Reviewed

WIRED’s 2025 guide picks Nintendo Switch 2 overall, but the right handheld depends on your game library, preferred operating system, budget and need for portability.

WIRED’s best handheld game console pick in its August 2025 guide is Nintendo Switch 2. It is not automatically the right choice for every player: the best handheld depends on the games you want to play, whether you prefer a console-style interface or a PC library, and how much setup you are willing to do. WIRED’s eight picks cover Nintendo, SteamOS, Windows, PS5 streaming and licensed retro cartridges. They are selected recommendations, not the only handhelds available.

The guide’s central buying distinction is simple: Nintendo offers a curated console library, while PC handhelds can reach a broader software ecosystem but demand more attention to compatibility and setup. PlayStation Portal has a different role again: it streams from a PS5 rather than playing games locally. The recommendations below reflect WIRED’s 2025 evaluation, not a 2026 retest.

Which handheld gaming console should you buy?

Start with the games you want to play, not a headline specification. If you want Nintendo exclusives and a straightforward console experience, consider Switch 2 or a discounted Switch OLED. If your library is on Steam, choose between the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED, or consider the Legion Go S with SteamOS. Windows handhelds offer broader software and peripheral access, with more navigation and setup friction in WIRED’s assessment. Choose PlayStation Portal only if streaming your PS5 games fits how and where you play.

Before buying any PC handheld, check compatibility for the specific games you care about. WIRED notes that many Steam-library games run well on Steam Deck, but high-end titles can require low graphics settings. Battery life also depends on the game and on display and power settings: demanding games and higher-performance settings can drain a handheld faster.

WIRED’s eight handheld gaming console picks

1. Nintendo Switch 2 — best handheld game console overall

WIRED names Switch 2 its overall pick. The 2025 guide reports faster loading and smoother gameplay than the prior generation, a larger 1080p screen with a higher refresh rate, and detachable Joy-Con 2 controllers that can function as mice in select games. In docked play, the guide reports output up to 4K at 60 fps with HDR; that figure applies to docked mode, not handheld play.

Its launch library was limited, according to WIRED, but backward compatibility with Switch games broadens the catalog. The key tradeoff is platform: Switch 2’s Nintendo library is not interchangeable with the open-ended PC software ecosystem. Check that the games you want are available on the console before choosing it. The cited specifications and evaluation are from WIRED’s August 2025 guide.

2. Nintendo Switch OLED — a good buy if discounted

The Switch OLED remains a reasonable option for players who want Nintendo’s existing Switch library and an OLED display. WIRED also highlights its improved kickstand and 64 GB of built-in storage, compared with 32 GB on the original Switch. Its value depends on the price you find: the guide cautions that at full price it can come close to Switch 2. Prices change, so compare current offers rather than relying on a 2025 price.

3. Valve Steam Deck — a Steam library in a handheld format

The Steam Deck runs SteamOS and uses Proton compatibility to make many Steam games playable on the device. WIRED found many games worked well, while noting that demanding, high-end titles may need low graphics settings. This is a practical choice if your PC game library is already on Steam and your priority titles are compatible; it is less compelling if you expect every PC release to run smoothly without adjustments.

4. Valve Steam Deck OLED — better display and battery specifications

WIRED presents the Steam Deck OLED as an upgrade for players who want its display improvements and a larger battery specification. The guide reports a 50-watt-hour battery, compared with 40 Wh in the original Steam Deck, and Wi-Fi 6E. These are guide-era specifications, not a promise of a fixed number of hours: actual runtime varies with the game, settings and other usage conditions. WIRED also prefers SteamOS’s handheld experience to that of many Windows competitors in its evaluation.

5. Lenovo Legion Go S (Windows) — broader software access, more setup friction

The Windows version of the Legion Go S is for players who value access to Windows software and peripherals. That flexibility comes with a less console-like experience: WIRED criticizes navigation using the controller and touchscreen, as well as setup friction. Consider it if the software access matters enough to justify configuring and navigating Windows on a handheld.

6. Lenovo Legion Go S (SteamOS) — SteamOS on Lenovo hardware

The SteamOS version aims to combine Lenovo’s handheld hardware with a more controller-friendly interface. WIRED’s tested unit used a Z1 Extreme processor and, in the guide’s evaluation, set up more quickly and fit its controls better than the Windows version. Legion Go S configurations vary, so verify the processor and operating system of the exact model you are considering rather than assuming every listing matches WIRED’s tested unit.

7. Sony PlayStation Portal — for streaming games from a PS5

PlayStation Portal streams games from a PS5 to its screen. It is not a standalone console for installing and playing games locally: you need a PS5 and suitable network conditions. Since gameplay depends on a stream, the quality of your Wi-Fi and network connection matters. It suits a player who wants to continue PS5 play in another room or location with a reliable connection, not someone looking for a self-contained handheld library.

8. Evercade EXP-R — licensed retro games on cartridges

The Evercade EXP-R is the retro-focused pick in WIRED’s list. Its appeal is a licensed cartridge library, mini-HDMI output and a portrait-game mode. WIRED also notes drawbacks in its button layout. It is a distinct alternative to modern PC and Nintendo handhelds: assess the available cartridges and control layout against the games you actually want to play.

Steam Deck or Windows handheld: which is better?

Neither is universally better. SteamOS, including its Proton compatibility layer, can feel more like a console and streamline handheld use, especially if your games are on Steam and work well on Deck. Windows expands software and peripheral possibilities, but WIRED found that navigating and setting up Windows handhelds can be less convenient with controller-and-touchscreen controls.

Make the choice by checking your priority games and accessories first. If they work on SteamOS, its more focused interface may be the easier fit. If you rely on Windows-only software or peripherals, Windows may be worth its extra friction. In either case, verify compatibility and the configuration of the specific device: handheld models and product versions are not all identical.

What to compare before choosing a handheld

  • Game library and compatibility: Confirm that your must-play games are available on the platform and run acceptably on the particular device.
  • Operating system and ease of use: Decide whether you want a curated console interface, a SteamOS experience or Windows flexibility that may involve more setup.
  • Screen and controls: Compare screen size and type, resolution, refresh rate, controller layout and ergonomics. Higher specifications do not guarantee a better fit for your hands or play style.
  • Performance and battery: More demanding games and higher display or power settings can shorten runtime. Treat a battery-capacity specification as a hardware detail, not a guaranteed playtime.
  • Portability: Consider whether the size, weight and controls work for the places and sessions where you will actually play.
  • Total cost: Include games, storage, a required host console such as PS5 for Portal, and any other hardware or services you need. Check current prices and exact configurations before purchase.

What storage card does Switch 2 use?

WIRED reports that Switch 2 has 256 GB of built-in storage and requires a microSD Express card for expansion; existing microSD cards are incompatible. Confirm that a card is specifically microSD Express before buying it for Switch 2. These storage details are reported in WIRED’s 2025 guide.
