The 60-second answer
acwipeoutres.dll is an Autodesk application component known as AcWipeoutRes Module. It is associated with AutoCAD-family and RealDWG-related installations, not with Windows itself.

The safest fix is to repair the exact Autodesk product that displays the error:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Choose Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair and follow the wizard.
- Restart Windows and launch the Autodesk application again.
If Repair is unavailable, uninstall and reinstall the product from your Autodesk account or the original official installation media. Do not download a loose copy of the DLL or place it in System32 or SysWOW64.

What causes the acwipeoutres.dll error
The most likely causes are:
- A corrupted or incomplete Autodesk installation
- An Autodesk update or cleanup operation that removed the file
- Antivirus quarantine
- Mixed files from different AutoCAD, RealDWG, or Autodesk product releases
- A missing dependency or incorrect application path
- General Windows corruption
- File permissions, disk problems, or a damaged user profile
The wording “specified module could not be found” needs special attention. Windows may display that message when the named DLL exists but another dependency required by the application is missing.
acwipeoutres.dll is described as a resource-only DLL. Resource-only DLLs contain items such as strings, dialogs, icons, and other application resources rather than ordinary executable code. That is why manually registering this file is generally not an appropriate repair.
Identify the Autodesk product before changing anything
If several Autodesk programs are installed, repair the product that actually requested the file rather than choosing the first Autodesk entry you see.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the application that fails
Note:
- The exact Autodesk program name
- Whether the error appears during launch or while opening a drawing
- Whether the problem started after an update, cleanup, antivirus alert, or manual file deletion
- Whether every Windows account is affected
- Whether the application fails only for one drawing or for all drawings
If the message appears in AutoCAD, begin with that AutoCAD installation. If it appears in another Autodesk application, repair that specific product instead.
Check Event Viewer
Event Viewer can identify the executable and module involved.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an Error recorded at the time the Autodesk program failed.
- Open the event and check Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
If the event names a different Autodesk executable or another missing module, use that information when repairing the installation.
Check the installed file location
Public file inventories have reported paths such as:
C:Program Filesautocad 2007
C:Program FilesAutodeskAutoCAD 2015en-USAcWipeoutRes.dll
These are examples, not a universal Autodesk path. The file normally belongs inside the directory of the Autodesk product that uses it, often in a language or resource folder.
To search without downloading anything:
- Open File Explorer.
- Select This PC.
- Enter
AcWipeoutRes.dllin the search box. - Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click any result and select Open file location.
A copy inside an Autodesk installation directory is more plausible than one found in a temporary folder, a download directory, or a global Windows folder. A file found outside the expected product directory should be treated cautiously until it has been scanned and verified.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk installation
Repair is the best first step when the file is missing or damaged.
Rank #2
- Close AutoCAD and every other Autodesk application.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- In Programs and Features, locate the Autodesk product named in the error.
- Select it.
- Click Uninstall/Change.
- Choose Repair.
- Allow the installer to restore missing files.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the Autodesk application.
How to tell whether Repair worked
Repair worked if:
- The application opens without the DLL message
- The affected drawing or command works normally
- The file is restored inside the same Autodesk product directory
- Event Viewer no longer records the same startup failure
If Repair completes but the same error returns, do not copy a DLL from another Autodesk version. Continue with a full reinstall.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Autodesk product
Reinstalling is required when the installer does not offer Repair, when Repair fails, or when the installation state is severely damaged.
Before uninstalling, make sure you know:
- The exact Autodesk product and release
- The account or license method used to activate it
- Where the installer will come from
- Whether you need to preserve custom settings, templates, profiles, or add-ins
Then:
- Close all Autodesk applications.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Search for the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Complete the Autodesk removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to your Autodesk account or use the original official installation media.
- Download or run the installer for the same product and release.
- Install the product.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the application.
Older Autodesk products may use Control Panel → Programs and Features → Uninstall/Change instead of the newer Settings interface. Newer Autodesk installation experiences may not support repair, making uninstall and reinstall the supported route.
Reinstalling the same product release is safer than borrowing acwipeoutres.dll from AutoCAD 2007, AutoCAD 2015, RealDWG, or another Autodesk installation. Similar filenames do not guarantee compatible files.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an Autodesk file after an update or scan.

For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the Autodesk error began.
- Open any entry associated with the Autodesk installation.
Do not immediately restore the file. First confirm that:
- The file came from the genuine Autodesk installation
- The installation directory is the expected one
- The publisher and digital signature are valid, when a signature is present
- A full security scan does not report additional threats
Microsoft explains the Protection history process here: review Windows Security Protection History.
Reinstalling the affected Autodesk product from official media is usually preferable to restoring a quarantined loose file. If you restore a file, Windows Security may detect it again, particularly if the underlying installation or update is damaged.
Fix 4: Verify the file and its location
If AcWipeoutRes.dll is present, check whether it belongs to the correct product.
- Right-click the file.
- Select Properties.
- Open the General tab and note the full location.
- Open the Details tab.
- Review the description and publisher information.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid.
The expected description is AcWipeoutRes Module, and the associated publisher is Autodesk. File metadata such as version, size, and copyright can vary between releases, so do not use a particular size or version number as proof that every copy is genuine.
Rank #3
If the file is in a temporary, download, or unrelated application directory, remove it only after confirming that it is not required by another legitimate program. Repair the Autodesk product rather than moving the file into a different directory.
Fix 5: Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
acwipeoutres.dll is not a Windows system DLL. Copying it into either of these locations is not a normal solution:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
Windows uses different search rules for application DLLs, and the Autodesk application normally expects its own resources beside the product executable or in its product-specific resource directory.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation needs the file in both folders. System32 and SysWOW64 are not interchangeable storage locations, and putting an Autodesk file in either one can create confusion or expose the system to unsafe DLL loading.
Microsoft documents the application DLL search process in its dynamic-link library search order documentation.
Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point, usually through exported functions such as DllRegisterServer. A resource-only DLL has no normal registration entry point.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 AcWipeoutRes.dll
It may produce an error instead of fixing the Autodesk installation. Microsoft describes resource-only DLLs and the absence of an entry point in its /NOENTRY documentation.
Use Autodesk Repair or reinstall the product instead.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
Because acwipeoutres.dll belongs to Autodesk rather than Windows, System File Checker is not the primary fix. Use Windows servicing commands when you also see damaged system files, failed Windows features, update failures, or unrelated applications reporting system corruption.
Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Choose Yes if User Account Control asks.
- Run:
cmd
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Recommended Free Tools
- Wait for the operation to finish.
- Restart Windows.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes:
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run:
cmd
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Autodesk application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
If SFC reports repaired files but AutoCAD still shows the same message, return to Autodesk Repair or reinstall. These commands do not replace the Autodesk component itself.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it identifies, while the full version performs the repair; reinstalling the affected Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this application-specific DLL.
Fix 8: Check updates, drivers, and compatibility
A graphics driver is not the normal source of a missing resource DLL, but an Autodesk application can also fail after a system change or driver update.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFirst check Windows Update:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Autodesk again.
For device drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not use Device Manager to search for acwipeoutres.dll; it cannot restore an Autodesk application file. Driver work matters only when Event Viewer or the Autodesk application also shows a graphics, display, or device-related failure.
Manually checking several manufacturers and matching driver versions can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the available installation, while the full version performs the driver update; it is not a substitute for repairing the Autodesk installation.

If the file exists but Windows still reports that the specified module cannot be found, another dependency may be missing.
Work through these checks:
- Confirm that the file is in the Autodesk product directory.
- Confirm that the error names the correct Autodesk executable.
- Temporarily test whether the issue affects another Windows user account.
- Check whether security software blocked another file in the same installation.
- Review Event Viewer for the actual faulting module.
- Confirm that the Windows account can read the Autodesk installation folder.
- Check available disk space and the health of the drive.
- Repair or reinstall the Autodesk product after these checks.
Do not install a Visual C++ Redistributable merely because a DLL error appears. It is relevant only when the error names a missing Visual C++ runtime or the Autodesk installer reports corrupted runtime components. Installing unrelated runtimes will not recreate an Autodesk resource file.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 10: Test another Windows profile
A damaged user profile can make one application fail for one user while it works for another.
To test:
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts.
- Choose Other users.
- Select Add account.
- Create a temporary local test account.
- Sign out of the current account.
- Sign in to the test account.
- Launch the Autodesk application.
If Autodesk works in the test account, the installation may be intact and the original profile may contain damaged settings, permissions, or cached Autodesk data. Do not delete the original profile until personal files and Autodesk settings have been backed up.
If the error affects every user, focus on repairing or reinstalling the Autodesk product.
Fix 11: Use System Restore only for a suitable recent change
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a system change and a restore point predates the failure.
Best Value
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the Autodesk error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what the process changes. System Restore is not a replacement for reinstalling Autodesk, and it is useful only when an appropriate restore point exists.
32-bit and 64-bit questions
Some third-party file indexes describe copies of acwipeoutres.dll as 32-bit, but that does not establish one fixed architecture for every Autodesk release. Autodesk technical information describes the module as resource-only, making ordinary processor architecture assumptions less useful than identifying the exact product installation.
Do not copy a file between 32-bit and 64-bit Autodesk products. Do not place copies in both Windows system directories. Let the official Autodesk installer place the correct component in the correct directory.
Frequently asked questions
Is acwipeoutres.dll a Windows file?
No. Available evidence identifies it as an Autodesk component named AcWipeoutRes Module. It should normally be installed inside the Autodesk product directory, not in a Windows system folder.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Which Autodesk products use it?
Evidence connects it with AutoCAD-family and RealDWG-related component sets. There is no complete public Autodesk catalogue proving every product and release that contains it, so repair the exact product named by the error.
Can I download acwipeoutres.dll from a DLL website?
That is unsafe and often ineffective. A downloaded file may be malicious, altered, from the wrong product release, or incompatible with the application. Use Autodesk Repair, an official Autodesk reinstall, or verified installation media.
Should I register it with regsvr32?
Normally, no. A resource-only DLL does not have the ordinary registration entry point that regsvr32 expects.
What if the file is already present?
The file may be in the wrong directory, damaged, blocked, or dependent on another missing module. Check Event Viewer, verify its location and signature, then repair the exact Autodesk installation.
Recommended Free Tools
Do I need to copy it into System32 and SysWOW64?
No. Those folders are not the correct general destination for this Autodesk resource file.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. Visual C++ repair is relevant only when the error specifically identifies a Visual C++ runtime or the Autodesk installer reports a runtime problem.
What is the correct permanent fix?
Repair the affected Autodesk product first. If Repair is unavailable or fails, uninstall and reinstall that exact product from Autodesk’s official account or installation media.
