The safest fix is to repair the affected Autodesk product when Repair is available. If repair is unavailable or fails, remove and reinstall that exact Autodesk product using Autodesk’s official installer, Autodesk Account, or Autodesk Access. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random file site or copy it into System32.

What addownload.dll does
The file is associated with Autodesk Download Manager and Autodesk product installation packages. Its internal description is Autodesk Download Manager, and its publisher is Autodesk, Inc.
#1 Best Overall
It may appear inside an Autodesk installer’s temporary extraction or Setup directory. That does not mean it should permanently exist in:
C:WindowsSystem32
or:
C:WindowsSysWOW64
A DLL name alone does not identify the correct file. Autodesk products and installer generations can use different builds, dependencies, and architectures. A file that has the right name can still be incompatible with the Autodesk application that needs it.
The error usually means one of four things:
- An Autodesk installation is incomplete or damaged.
- An installer failed to download or extract its files.
- Security software removed or quarantined the file.
- A dependency, permission, or Windows component problem prevented the DLL from loading.
The correct solution depends on when the error appears.

Error when launching AutoCAD or another Autodesk product
If the desktop application was previously installed and now refuses to start, the installed Autodesk product may have missing or damaged files. A partial update, cleanup utility, failed uninstall, or antivirus action can cause this.
Use the repair steps below before attempting manual DLL registration.
Error while installing or extracting Autodesk software
If the message says:
Cannot create SetupAdDownload.dll
the installer is usually failing to write or extract its contents. This is not necessarily evidence that a permanent copy of the DLL is missing from Windows.
Common causes include:
- An incomplete installer download
- Insufficient free disk space
- A temporary folder that is not writable
- Antivirus or controlled-folder protection
- A proxy, firewall, or interrupted connection
- A damaged self-extracting installer
“Failed to initialize DownloadManager”
This points to the Autodesk download or installation process rather than a normal Windows DLL problem. A corrupted installer download, Autodesk Access Service Host problem, or blocked installer configuration can prevent the manager from starting.
Fix 1: Repair the Autodesk product
Repair is the best first step when the error appears while launching an already-installed Autodesk application.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find the affected Autodesk product.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Modify or Uninstall, depending on what Autodesk exposes.
- In the Autodesk maintenance window, select Repair.
- Follow the prompts and restart Windows when requested.
- Launch the Autodesk product again.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select the affected Autodesk product.
- Click Modify or Uninstall/Change.
- Select Repair in the Autodesk installer.
- Complete the process and restart the computer.
- Test the Autodesk application.
Repair restores missing product files and related installation information. If the application starts normally afterward, do not copy anything into a Windows system folder.

Some newer Autodesk products use the ODIS installation framework and may not provide a Repair button. Autodesk products using the older classic installer commonly expose Repair and Reinstall options, while newer installations may require uninstalling and reinstalling instead.
Fix 2: Reinstall the exact Autodesk product
Use this step if Repair is missing, Repair fails, or the error returns immediately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore removing the product, record:
- The Autodesk product name
- The product release or build shown in Autodesk Account or Autodesk Access
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Any error code or installer log path
- Whether the error happens during setup or application launch
Then proceed as follows:
- Save your work and close all Autodesk applications.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Locate the affected Autodesk product.
- Select Uninstall.
- Complete the Autodesk removal process.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the same product again from Autodesk Account, Autodesk Access, or Autodesk’s official installer.
- Save the installer to a local folder with a short path, such as:
text
C:Autodesk - Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation and restart Windows if prompted.
Do not mix files from different Autodesk releases. If a 32-bit Autodesk application needs a 32-bit dependency set, a similarly named 64-bit DLL is not a valid substitute. The same applies in reverse.
If the Autodesk installer repeatedly fails, remove the incomplete download first. Downloading the same damaged package repeatedly will reproduce the same extraction error.
Fix 3: Download the Autodesk installer again
Use a fresh download when the failure occurs during setup or when several files produce messages such as “Cannot create Setup…”
- Delete or move the incomplete installer.
- Empty the relevant temporary extraction folder if the installer left one behind.
- Check available space on the system drive.
- Download the product again through Autodesk Account, Autodesk Access, or Autodesk’s official alternative download method.
- Save the installer locally instead of launching it directly from a browser download prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- If the normal Install Now method fails, use Autodesk’s Download or Custom Install method instead.
- Retry the installation.
A local folder such as C:Autodesk is preferable to a deeply nested folder, a network share, a synchronized cloud folder, or removable storage.

If your organization uses a proxy or firewall, ask the administrator whether Autodesk download domains and installer traffic are being blocked. Browser security settings, network interruptions, and proxy configuration can all affect the download manager.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Security software may remove a file during extraction. Do not assume that every detection is a false positive, and do not restore a standalone DLL obtained from an unknown source.
To inspect Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving the Autodesk installer or
AdDownload.dll. - Expand an entry to inspect its path and threat information.
- Restore the file only if it came from a genuine Autodesk installer and the installer source is trustworthy.
- Prefer downloading and reinstalling the Autodesk product again rather than restoring an isolated file.
If Defender repeatedly removes the file from a fresh official installer, leave the file quarantined until you have reviewed the detection. Contact Autodesk support or your security administrator with the detection name, installer version, file path, and installation log.

Also check third-party antivirus quarantine screens. Security products may call the same action quarantine, isolation, remediation, or blocked behavior.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix 5: Check folder permissions and controlled-folder access
An extraction error can occur even when the installer is valid.
- Move the installer to a local folder such as:
text
C:Autodesk - Right-click the folder and select Properties.
- Open the Security tab.
- Confirm that your account has permission to read, write, and modify files there.
- Close the Properties window.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
Windows Security may also block an installer through controlled folder access:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Manage ransomware protection.
- Open Allow an app through Controlled folder access.
- Add the genuine Autodesk installer only if you trust its source.
- Run the installation again.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection as a general solution. If protection must be changed for troubleshooting, follow your security administrator’s procedure and restore the protection afterward.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker are secondary fixes for this problem. They repair Windows component-store corruption and protected Windows files; they do not normally recreate a third-party Autodesk DLL.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Run DISM first:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Wait for it to finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Open another elevated Command Prompt.
- Run:
text
sfc /scannow - Restart Windows again if SFC reports that it repaired files.
- Retry the Autodesk repair or installation.
Do not close the window while either scan is running. If DISM reports that the source files cannot be found, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the command again. If SFC reports that it could not repair all files, review the result and continue with Autodesk’s own reinstall path rather than expecting SFC to supply AdDownload.dll.
When repeated manual DISM and SFC runs become difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and show what it found; its repair function requires the full version, and reinstalling the Autodesk product remains the definitive fix for this application file.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified basis for treating AdDownload.dll as a self-registering component.
Do not run:
regsvr32 AdDownload.dll
That command will not repair a missing Autodesk installation file. It may instead produce another error, such as a missing entry point or module-loading failure.
If you already ran it, the command itself does not usually damage Windows. Return to the Autodesk repair or reinstall procedure.

Fix 8: Do not copy the DLL into System32
Copying addownload.dll into System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application directory is unsafe and often ineffective.
It can fail because:
- The file is the wrong Autodesk build.
- The file has the wrong architecture.
- A dependent DLL is also missing.
- The application expects the file in its installer directory.
- The copied file conflicts with another version.
- The downloaded file contains malware or has been modified.
The correct location is determined by the Autodesk installer that owns the file. Let that installer place the complete, matching set of files.
Fix 9: Check architecture and product compatibility
To check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
An application may still have its own architecture requirements, so Windows architecture alone does not identify the correct Autodesk DLL. Do not select a file based only on a version number, file size, or matching name from a public file listing.
If the error began after installing an older Autodesk release over a newer one, remove the damaged product and install the exact release intended for your license and Windows environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 10: Check Windows Update and device drivers only for broader failures
A normal driver update does not restore addownload.dll, and Device Manager is not the primary repair tool for an Autodesk installer DLL. Check it only if the Autodesk failure is accompanied by display, storage, network, or hardware errors.
To inspect drivers:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Display adapters, Network adapters, and Storage controllers.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a device that stopped working after an update, open its Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if available.
Manually hunting through dozens of driver versions can obscure the real Autodesk installer problem. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show the results; installation through its full version is optional, and updating a driver will not replace the Autodesk-owned DLL itself.
What if the error says “specified module could not be found”?
That wording does not always mean addownload.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the DLL.
The practical response is still to repair or reinstall the owning Autodesk product, because the official installer restores the complete dependency set. If the error persists after a clean reinstall:
- Confirm the exact file path named in the error or installation log.
- Check whether antivirus removed a nearby dependency.
- Confirm the installer matches the product release and architecture.
- Check free disk space and write permissions.
- Review Autodesk installation logs.
- Test whether the failure occurs in a new local download rather than the original installer.
- Contact Autodesk support with the product name, Windows version, exact message, and log files.
Do not download each newly named dependency separately. A chain of missing DLL messages usually indicates that the installation source or product installation is incomplete.
Best Value
Should you install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified evidence that installing one of these runtimes specifically restores addownload.dll. They may be required by the larger Autodesk application, but this file is identified with Autodesk Download Manager, not as a Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, or Windows system file.
Install a runtime only when the Autodesk product documentation or its installer explicitly requires it, and obtain it from Microsoft. Do not use a runtime installation as a substitute for repairing the Autodesk product.
Frequently asked questions
Is addownload.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Autodesk Download Manager and Autodesk installation packages. It should not be treated as a normal Windows component.
Which Autodesk product installed it?
The owning product depends on the installer and Autodesk release. The file may be present in an Autodesk product installer or in a temporary Setup extraction directory. Check the installation log and the parent folder rather than assuming that every Autodesk product includes it.
Can I download addownload.dll by itself?
You should not. A standalone download may contain the wrong version, wrong architecture, a missing dependency, or malicious code. Reinstall the Autodesk product from an official Autodesk source.
Should I run regsvr32?
Usually no. There is no verified reason to register this Autodesk downloader DLL manually.
Why does the installer say “Cannot create SetupAdDownload.dll”?
That message points to an extraction or write failure. Redownload the installer, use a writable local folder, check disk space and permissions, and inspect antivirus protection.
What if Repair is not available?
Uninstall and reinstall the product. Newer Autodesk installations using ODIS may require this approach.
What if the error returns after reinstalling?
Check quarantine history, controlled-folder access, proxy and firewall settings, disk space, installation logs, and whether the freshly downloaded installer is complete. If a different DLL is named afterward, that may indicate a broader incomplete installation or missing dependency.

Only as a fallback when the problem began after a known system change and no suitable Autodesk installer is available. Repairing or reinstalling the Autodesk product is the primary remedy.
Is the file malware?
A missing file does not prove malware, and a security detection does not prove that every copy is safe. Check the source, digital signature, quarantine details, and installation path. Prefer a fresh official Autodesk installation over restoring an unknown file.
