ntdsbcli.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows library, not a normal gaming runtime such as DirectX, Visual C++, or .NET. If Windows says ntdsbcli.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows or the specific program requesting it rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

That makes the file mainly relevant to domain controllers, directory backup and restore software, and older Windows components. It is not normally a file that a current PC game should install by itself.
The internal description NT5DS refers to the older NT5 directory-service functionality. Microsoft also notes that older directory-backup APIs may be altered or unavailable on later Windows versions, with Volume Shadow Copy Service recommended for newer systems.

This distinction matters. A missing ntdsbcli.dll error can indicate a damaged Windows component, but it can also mean that an old application is trying to use an obsolete or incorrectly packaged interface.
Error messages this guide covers
The wording may vary depending on which executable loads the library:
- “The program can’t start because ntdsbcli.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “ntdsbcli.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading ntdsbcli.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “ntdsbcli.dll could not be loaded.”
- “ntdsbcli.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
The exact program named in the message is more useful than the DLL filename. Note whether the error appears:
Recommended Free Tools
- During Windows startup
- When signing in
- On a domain controller
- After Windows Update
- After installing or removing software
- Only when launching one older application or game
If it occurs everywhere or during startup, treat it as a Windows integrity problem first. If it appears only in one program, that program may be damaged, incompatible, or incorrectly packaged.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart Windows
A damaged or incomplete update can leave Windows components in an inconsistent state. Start with the least invasive repair.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Reopen the affected program.
On Windows 10, the path is Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
If the error began immediately after a failed upgrade or update, do not repeatedly copy DLL files into system folders. Continue with the component repair steps below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and System File Checker
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then uses that repaired source to check and replace protected system files. Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC for missing or corrupted Windows components.Microsoft’s SFC guidance
Run DISM
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. It can take time and may appear to pause.
- Leave the Command Prompt window open.
A successful result says that the restore operation completed successfully. Restart Windows before testing the affected program.
Run SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt again if necessary and run:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Possible results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: SFC found no protected-file problem.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart and test the program.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Run DISM again, restart, and run SFC once more.
- Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: Restart into Safe Mode and repeat the SFC scan.
If the repair succeeds but the same error returns, investigate the requesting application, antivirus history, and disk health rather than continuing to replace files manually.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its free scan identifies, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in DISM and SFC remain the primary repair path.
If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM normally obtains replacement components through Windows servicing. If it reports that source files could not be found, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess.Microsoft’s Windows image repair documentation
The source must match the installed Windows version and edition. Do not point DISM at a random ISO or an unrelated computer.
The general form is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<matching-source> /LimitAccess
The exact source path depends on the installation media. If you are unsure whether the media matches your installation, use Windows Update or perform a supported in-place Windows repair instead.
Fix 3: Identify and repair the program requesting the DLL
A message that appears only when launching one application usually points to that application rather than a missing general-purpose runtime.
Check the error window and shortcut
Look for the executable name in the error message, title bar, shortcut properties, or the application’s installation folder. You can also:
- Right-click the application shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Check the Target field.
- Note the executable path and publisher.
If the application is old, it may reference an Active Directory API that is no longer available in the expected form. It may also have been partially removed by an uninstaller or security product.
Use the application’s repair option
For software that appears in Windows’ installed-app list:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu or the application entry.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application after the repair.
Some desktop programs instead provide Repair in their original installer or under Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
For games, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan and repair function. The exact wording depends on the launcher. If verification does not restore the program, uninstall it and reinstall it using the publisher’s official installer.
Do not copy ntdsbcli.dll into the application folder unless the software vendor specifically supplies that exact file for that exact release.

If DISM and SFC report no problem, but one application still requests ntdsbcli.dll, reinstalling that application is usually more appropriate than altering Windows.
- Back up the application’s saves, profiles, or configuration files.
- Uninstall the affected program from Settings → Apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the installer from the software publisher’s official source.
- Install the newest release that supports your version of Windows.
- Start the application again.
For legacy software, check whether the vendor provides a modern release. An old executable can continue asking for a historical API even when Windows itself is healthy.
Compatibility settings may help some older programs:
- Right-click the application executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an appropriate older Windows version.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the program.
Compatibility mode cannot restore an API that the application fundamentally requires. If the program is business-critical, use the vendor’s supported operating system or a properly maintained virtual machine rather than replacing system DLLs.

In Windows Security:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections involving
ntdsbcli.dll. - Check the detection name, file path, and publisher or signature information.
Restore a quarantined file only when you have verified that it is a genuine Microsoft file and the detection is demonstrably incorrect. Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item makes it active again.Microsoft’s Protection History guidance
If the file was found in a temporary folder, an application directory, or an unusual user-writable location, do not restore it automatically. Run a full security scan and repair Windows through supported servicing.
Fix 6: Check architecture and file-system redirection
A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program do not always load system files from the same visible location.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
On 64-bit Windows:
%windir%System32normally contains native 64-bit system files.%windir%SysWOW64is used for 32-bit system-file redirection.
Despite its name, System32 does not mean “32-bit.” Microsoft explains this behavior in its documentation for the Windows File System Redirector.
Do not treat the absence of ntdsbcli.dll in a normal File Explorer search as proof that Windows is broken. The file may not be present in the same visible location on every current installation, and a “module not found” message can mean that a dependency of the named DLL is missing.
If the requesting application is 32-bit, installing a 64-bit copy will not solve the loading problem. If it is 64-bit, a random 32-bit replacement is equally unsuitable. Use the application vendor’s compatible build or repair Windows servicing.

A graphics or chipset driver is not a normal source of ntdsbcli.dll errors. Device Manager will not normally repair this Windows library. Check drivers only if the problem began after a hardware change, a failed driver installation, or broader system instability.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the device category related to the recent change.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a graphics card, obtain drivers from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page when Windows does not find a suitable driver. Avoid replacing a system DLL as a substitute for a driver repair.
Manually checking every device and matching driver versions can involve a lot of guesswork. Outbyte Driver Updater can show what its free scan identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling an application that specifically owns the error.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore can roll back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs without affecting personal files.Microsoft’s System Restore guidance
Use it when the error began after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or software removal and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, photos, or other personal files, but it can remove applications and drivers installed after the selected restore point.
What not to do
Do not download ntdsbcli.dll from a random DLL site
Unofficial DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible historical build, or a modified file. Even an authentic file may not fix the underlying problem if the loader is actually missing one of its dependencies.
Use these supported sources instead:
- Windows Update
- DISM and SFC
- A matching Windows installation source
- System Restore
- The original application vendor’s installer
- Supported Microsoft Windows repair media
There is no verified Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET package, or separate Microsoft runtime installer that should be installed specifically to obtain this file.
Do not run regsvr32 on it
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Microsoft documents it as a registration tool for applicable libraries, not as a universal DLL repair command.Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation
ntdsbcli.dll is documented as an API library for directory-service functionality, not as a COM server. Running:
regsvr32 ntdsbcli.dll
is therefore not an evidence-based fix and can produce another error.
Do not replace files on a domain controller manually
On a domain controller, directory services and backup operations are infrastructure-sensitive. Use supported Active Directory and VSS procedures, make sure backups are valid, and involve an administrator familiar with the environment. Improvised replacement can create a larger recovery problem than the original loader message.
If the error remains after repairs
If Windows Update, DISM, and SFC complete successfully but the error remains:
- Identify the exact executable requesting
ntdsbcli.dll. - Determine whether the error occurs only in that application.
- Check the application’s repair or file-verification option.
- Reinstall the application from its official source.
- Check whether the application supports Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- Review Windows Security protection history.
- Check Event Viewer for related application or disk errors.
- Back up important data and investigate disk health if corruption keeps returning.
If several unrelated programs fail, or the error appears during startup, consider an in-place Windows repair. If the issue began after a recent system change and a restore point exists, System Restore is also reasonable.
FAQ
Is ntdsbcli.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and Active Directory directory-service backup functionality. Its documented context is narrow and legacy-oriented rather than a general consumer application runtime.
Is ntdsbcli.dll needed for games?
There is no reliable application-specific pattern tying this file to a particular modern game. If a game reports it, verify the game installation and compatibility before modifying Windows.
Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
No evidence supports those packages as the source of this specific Windows library. Install them only when the application specifically reports a missing component from one of those runtimes.
Is it safe to copy the file from another computer?
No. The other computer may use a different Windows build, architecture, servicing state, or file version. The file may also have been tampered with. Repair Windows through servicing or reinstall the application instead.
Why does “module not found” appear when the DLL exists?
The loader may be reporting a missing dependency rather than the named file itself. Architecture mismatches and obsolete API references can produce similar messages.
What if SFC says there are no integrity violations?
That result makes a damaged protected Windows file less likely. Identify the requesting executable, repair or reinstall its application, and check whether it is compatible with the installed Windows version.
Where is ntdsbcli.dll located?
Do not rely on a fixed path or a simple File Explorer search. Windows uses architecture-specific redirection, and the file is not guaranteed to appear in the same visible location on every current installation. The correct repair is determined by the requesting process and Windows servicing state.
