addressbook.dll errors may appear as “addressbook.dll is missing,” “addressbook.dll was not found,” or “The code execution cannot proceed because addressbook.dll was not found.” You may also see “Error loading addressbook.dll” or “The application was unable to start correctly.”
The 60-second answer
addressbook.dll is not one universal Windows component. It is an application-specific filename used by unrelated products, including Tysoft EasyCert, Tysoft EasyPAT, Companion Suite Pro LL, and an Oracle JD Edwards EnterpriseOne component.
Do not download a replacement DLL and copy it into System32. Identify the program named in the error, then repair or reinstall that exact program using its official installer or original installation media.
The file normally belongs beside the application executable or inside that application’s installation directory. It is not automatically supposed to be in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Why addressbook.dll is missing
The most likely causes are:
- The parent program was incompletely installed.
- An update or failed uninstall removed the file.
- Antivirus software quarantined it.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build of the application is installed.
- A separate Microsoft runtime dependency is missing.
- The application directory or Windows installation is corrupted.
- A shortcut is launching an old copy of the program from another folder.
The filename alone does not identify the publisher, version, architecture, or correct replacement file. A DLL from one product cannot safely repair another product that happens to use the same name.
1. Identify the program that needs the file
Start with the complete error message.
Look for:
- The executable name shown in the title bar or message.
- A full path, if the dialog provides one.
- The shortcut you used to launch the program.
- The application that was recently updated, restored, cleaned, or uninstalled.
To inspect a shortcut:
- Right-click the program shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab.
- Read the Target field.
- Note the folder containing the executable.
If the error appears after launching a game, use that game’s launcher rather than searching Windows for a generic DLL.
If no program is obvious, check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
eventvwr.msc. - Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and application path.
Do not replace every copy of addressbook.dll you find. Multiple copies may belong to different applications.
2. Repair the owning application
Repair is the safest first fix because it restores the vendor’s matching files, dependencies, permissions, and registration settings.
For a traditional desktop program:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the program that produced the error.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if available.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the program again from its normal shortcut.
On Windows 11, you can also try:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
Windows 10 users can try:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options or Modify, depending on the program.
- Select Repair, if offered.
If repair is unavailable or does not work, reinstall the same application:
- Uninstall it from Installed apps or Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Obtain the installer from the application’s publisher or use the original installation media.
- Install the correct edition and architecture.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the original program.
If the application is old, reinstalling its original version may be more reliable than installing a similarly named newer product. Compatibility mode can help an old program run, but it cannot recreate a missing vendor file.
3. Check whether antivirus quarantined the DLL
Security software may remove a legitimate application file, or the application may have been installed from an untrusted source.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Find an entry involving the affected application’s folder or
addressbook.dll. - Check the detection name and original path.
Do not restore the file automatically. First confirm that:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The path belongs to the application you intended to install.
- The installer came from the publisher or original media.
- The file is not in a temporary download folder.
- The application installer has been scanned.
If the file was repeatedly quarantined, leave it removed, obtain a clean installer, and submit a suspected false positive to the security vendor. Do not broadly disable antivirus protection.
After confirming the installer is legitimate, reinstall the parent application rather than copying an isolated DLL from another source.
4. Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit application usually needs 32-bit components, even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs its 64-bit build and matching dependencies.
Check the application’s architecture in its documentation or installer. You can also inspect the installation location:
C:Program Filescommonly contains 64-bit applications.C:Program Files (x86)commonly contains 32-bit applications.
These folder locations are clues, not proof.
If the error says the file is “not designed to run on Windows” or shows 0xc000007b, investigate architecture mismatch, corruption, and dependent libraries. Replacing addressbook.dll alone may not resolve that type of failure.

Install the application’s correct build from its publisher. Do not put a 32-bit DLL beside a 64-bit executable, or the reverse.
5. Install a missing Microsoft runtime only when indicated
addressbook.dll itself has not been established as a Visual C++ runtime file. Installing Visual C++ will not normally restore it.
However, if the error separately names files such as MSVCP*.dll, VCRUNTIME*.dll, or api-ms-win-*.dll, install the Visual C++ Redistributable specified by the application vendor from Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
Use the architecture that matches the application:
- A 32-bit application generally requires the x86 package.
- A 64-bit application generally requires the x64 package.
- ARM64 applications require the ARM64 package.
After installation:
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the affected program.
- If the same
addressbook.dllmessage remains, repair or reinstall the parent application. The runtime package was not a replacement for that vendor’s file.
6. Use the program’s own verification feature
Games and some managed applications include a file verification function.
Open the program’s launcher and look for menu items named:
- Verify files
- Repair
- Scan and repair
- Validate installation
Run the verification, allow it to replace damaged files, then restart the launcher and test the program.
The exact menu varies by launcher. If verification reports that files cannot be repaired, reinstall the affected application from its official source.

System File Checker is not a general repair tool for third-party application DLLs. It normally will not recreate a private addressbook.dll stored in an application’s directory.
Use DISM and SFC when Windows features, system applications, updates, or protected Windows files are also failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Microsoft documents the recommended order in its System File Checker guidance.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM and SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows detected issues, while repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when that program owns addressbook.dll.

8. Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there
A driver is relevant when the failure began after a hardware change, device software update, or driver installation, or when Device Manager shows a related device error.
Check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the affected program.
- Look for a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Properties.
- Review the General and Driver tabs.
- Use Update driver only with a driver supplied by Windows or the hardware manufacturer.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, select Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart Windows.
Do not treat Device Manager as a way to obtain addressbook.dll. It manages hardware drivers, not ordinary application libraries.
Finding the correct driver versions manually can mean hunting through several device manufacturers and checking which package is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan that identifies driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the application that owns addressbook.dll.
9. Do not use regsvr32 unless the publisher requires it
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal command for installing or repairing a DLL.

Do not run:
regsvr32 addressbook.dll
unless the application’s publisher specifically identifies the file as a COM or ActiveX server and supplies the correct command, path, and architecture.
Otherwise, you may receive an error stating that the entry point was not found, or you may change registration without fixing the missing file. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains its limited purpose.
10. Check optional Windows features only when the application requires one
Some older programs explicitly require a Windows feature such as .NET Framework 3.5 or legacy components. The addressbook.dll filename alone does not prove that such a feature is required.
If the application’s documentation names a Windows feature:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Start.
- Type Windows features.
- Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable only the feature the application requires.
- Select OK.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application.
If enabling the feature does not help, return to repairing or reinstalling the parent program. Do not enable unrelated legacy features as a substitute for a missing vendor DLL.
11. Use System Restore after a recent system change
If the program worked until a driver, update, cleanup utility, or software installation changed the system, System Restore may help.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system settings, installed programs, and drivers without normally changing personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, reinstall the affected application instead.
What not to do
Avoid these common dead ends:
- Do not download a generic
addressbook.dll. - Do not copy a DLL from another application.
- Do not copy it into
System32orSysWOW64without vendor instructions. - Do not assume a file under
System32is a Windows component. - Do not trust a catalog description, version, size, or hash as proof that a DLL is correct for your program.
- Do not run
regsvr32blindly. - Do not disable antivirus broadly.
Generic DLL replacements can contain malware, target the wrong application, use the wrong architecture, or leave the original installation problem unresolved.
FAQ
Is addressbook.dll part of Windows?
That is not established. Treat it as a third-party application file unless its location, signature, and product documentation prove otherwise.
Which program uses addressbook.dll?
Several unrelated products use that filename. The error’s executable name, installation path, and digital signature are needed to identify the correct owner.
Should I put addressbook.dll in System32?
No. It normally belongs in the directory of the application that installed it.
Will Visual C++ Redistributable fix the error?
Only if the application separately reports a missing Microsoft runtime dependency. It does not restore a vendor’s addressbook.dll.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I register the file?
Only when the publisher explicitly documents it as a COM or ActiveX server and provides the correct registration instructions.
What if reinstalling does not work?
Confirm that the shortcut launches the same executable, check Event Viewer, inspect antivirus Protection history, verify the installation path, and confirm whether the program is 32-bit or 64-bit. If no product can be identified, the filename alone is not enough to choose a reliable replacement.
