When Windows reports that idapi01.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or has the wrong version, the real problem is usually a missing BDE installation, an incorrect configuration, or an application that cannot run on modern 64-bit Windows.
What idapi01.dll is
IDAPI01.DLL was distributed with older Delphi and Borland Database Engine applications. It was used by legacy database programs built around Paradox, dBASE, and Borland’s IDAPI database layer.
Programs that may depend on it include:
- Delphi 1 and other 16-bit Delphi applications
- Paradox and dBASE software
- Older database utilities
- Educational software such as the ESCAPE simulator
- Applications using Borland database components or Easycom/400
The file normally belongs with the application or its BDE runtime. It may appear alongside files such as IDAPI.CFG, IDPDX01.DLL, IDR10009.DLL, and ILD01.DLL.

Start by identifying the parent application
Before replacing anything, find out which program is requesting the DLL.
- Read the complete error message and note the program name shown in the title bar.
- Right-click the program’s shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and check Target.
- Open the target folder with Open File Location.
- Look for BDE files, an application-specific installer, or documentation that mentions Delphi, Borland, Paradox, or dBASE.
- Check Settings → Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Settings → Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the application’s original setup media, installer archive, or vendor support page.
Also check the operating system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Find System type.
- Record whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
If the program is unknown, do not download a DLL first. The application name, exact error text, Windows edition, system architecture, and whether the program ever worked on that computer are the most useful diagnostic details.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the original application
This is the safest and most likely fix when the program was recently installed, moved to a new PC, or damaged by cleanup software.
Use the application repair option
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the program again.
If there is no repair option, open Control Panel:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Select the database engine, BDE, runtime, or typical installation components when prompted.
Restart Windows after the repair and test the program from its normal shortcut. A successful repair should restore the application’s matching BDE files and configuration, not just place one DLL in a random folder.

Reinstall from trusted media
If repair fails:
- Back up the application’s data files first.
- Uninstall the program from Settings → Apps or Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original installer as administrator by right-clicking it and selecting Run as administrator.
- Install the complete application, including database engine or runtime components.
- Restart Windows again.
- Launch the application using its installed shortcut.
For software maintained by a developer, obtain the matching BDE redistributable through that developer’s installer or support channel. Embarcadero documents BDE as an obsolete compatibility technology and does not establish one universal old package that works with every application.
Do not assume that a package described as BDE 5.2 or 5.2.0.2 is correct for your program. The filename alone cannot identify the required BDE release.
Fix 2: Check whether 64-bit Windows is the actual blocker
Many applications requesting idapi01.dll are 16-bit. Microsoft does not support 16-bit x86 code on 64-bit Windows or ARM Windows.
If the application is 16-bit, copying idapi01.dll will not make it run on Windows 11 x64 or Windows 10 x64. The practical choices are:
- Find a vendor-updated version.
- Run the program on supported 32-bit Windows hardware or installation media.
- Use an isolated virtual machine containing a compatible 32-bit Windows environment.
- Migrate the data to a newer application if the original software is no longer maintained.
Check NTVDM on 32-bit Windows
Microsoft documents NTVDM for 16-bit programs on x86 Windows. It is not a solution for 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, and it is not available for ARM Windows.
On supported 32-bit Windows:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /online /enable-feature /all /featurename:NTVDM
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
If Windows reports that the feature is unavailable, confirm the system type. Do not try to force NTVDM onto a 64-bit installation.

A virtual machine is preferable to changing a modern daily-use installation when the application contains important business or personal data. Keep the old environment isolated, maintain backups, and avoid exposing obsolete software unnecessarily to untrusted files or networks.
Fix 3: Restore the correct BDE configuration
A correct DLL can still fail if the BDE path or configuration is missing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Older Delphi installations used settings in WIN.INI, including entries such as DLLPATH and CONFIGFILE01 under [IDAPI]. Later 32-bit BDE releases used settings under:
HKLMSOFTWAREBorlandDatabase Engine
Those settings can include DLLPATH and CONFIGFILE01.
Do not manually create registry entries unless the application vendor gives you exact instructions. Multiple BDE generations can conflict, and a wrong path can make an otherwise valid installation fail.
Instead:
- Close the affected program.
- Run the application installer’s Repair option.
- If no repair exists, reinstall the complete matching runtime.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application from its installed shortcut.
If the program works for one Windows user but not another, inspect that user’s permissions and application configuration. However, there is no universal profile repair that fixes every idapi01.dll error.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an old DLL because legacy files can have unusual metadata or behavior. That does not prove the file is malicious, and the filename alone does not prove that it is safe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving the affected application or
idapi01.dll. - Verify that the detection belongs to the application you intentionally installed.
- Restore the file only if it came from trusted original installation media or a verified vendor installer.
- Reinstall the complete application if you cannot verify the file’s origin.
After restoring or reinstalling, run a scan and test the program. Do not download a replacement DLL from an anonymous DLL website. Such files may contain malware, may be the wrong architecture or version, and often leave the missing BDE configuration unresolved.
Fix 5: Use System Restore when the failure is recent
System Restore is reasonable when the application worked previously and the error began immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, or security event.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the failure.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
System Restore does not replace a proper application backup. Save important documents before proceeding.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when other Windows files are failing
idapi01.dll is not a Windows component, so SFC and DISM normally will not restore it. Use them when Windows itself is showing broader corruption, such as several built-in programs failing or system files reporting errors.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program.
If the commands report that Windows files were repaired but the BDE program still fails, return to the application repair or compatibility steps. These commands do not install a third-party Borland DLL.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the Windows issues involved in manual repair; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when idapi01.dll belongs to that program.
Fix 7: Do not start with driver or runtime reinstalls
A display driver, Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, or .NET installation is not a first-line fix for a documented BDE API error. Install those components only if the parent application separately requires them.
If the program also reports hardware or device errors:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For a vendor-specific driver, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support channel. Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through device entries and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan identifies issues, while installation is handled by the full version. A driver update is not a substitute for reinstalling the BDE application.
What not to do
- Do not copy
idapi01.dllintoC:WindowsSystem32. - Do not copy it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not rename
idapi32.dlltoidapi01.dll. - Do not install several unrelated BDE packages side by side.
- Do not run
regsvr32 idapi01.dllas a routine repair. - Do not use random DLL download sites.
- Do not assume SFC or DISM can restore an application file.
- Do not edit BDE registry paths without the application vendor’s instructions.
- Do not treat every error as malware, disk corruption, or a driver failure.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. The BDE API DLL is a runtime library, not documented as a self-registering COM component. A registration error therefore does not repair the missing BDE installation.
FAQ
Is idapi01.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is a legacy Borland Database Engine file installed by an application.
Does idapi32.dll replace idapi01.dll?
No. IDAPI32.DLL belongs to a different 32-bit BDE generation. Renaming it is unsafe and does not convert a 32-bit engine into a 16-bit one.
What do errors and mean?
identifies a failure to locate `IDAPI01.DLL` or initialize the BDE. identifies a failure to load it. A wrong-version message indicates that the application found an incompatible file.
Can regsvr32 fix the error?
Normally no. Repair or reinstall the complete application and its matching BDE runtime instead.
Will Windows 11 run the old program?
Only if the application and every dependency are compatible. A 16-bit application cannot run natively on 64-bit or ARM Windows. Use an updated program or a compatible 32-bit environment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I provide when asking for help?
Provide the application name, exact error text, Windows edition and architecture, whether the program ever worked on that computer, and whether antivirus recently quarantined a file. Also mention whether the application came from original installation media or was copied from another computer.
