To improve in DRAGON BALL: Sparking! ZERO, choose your response to the opponent’s action instead of relying on one defense or rushing straight in. Move to change your approach, identify the attack before guarding or countering, and manage Ki and Skill Count for the next exchange. The mechanics below use Standard controls as the baseline; button labels can differ with Classic controls, platform, character and remapping.
Use movement to change the exchange
Step and Short Dash are useful for more than closing distance: they can make your approach less predictable and help evade attacks such as Blast Attacks. The official guide also describes connecting movement with other actions. Bandai Namco’s producer interview says Short Dash “opens up more possibilities for movement, attacks on the go, and even more complex actions.” Treat that as an option set, not a guaranteed punish: distance, opponent timing, character and game version all matter. Bandai Namco’s combat guide and producer interview explain the movement tools.
Instead of dashing directly at the opponent every time, vary when and how you approach. A Short Dash can create room to evade, attack while moving, or transition into Dragon Dash; watch how the opponent reacts before committing to the next action.
Read the attack before choosing a defense
No defensive option answers everything. First identify the attack’s direction and type, then choose a response that fits its timing. Standard is the official beginner guide’s recommended control scheme and its default for instructions; check your own control settings for the corresponding inputs, especially if you use Classic or have remapped buttons. Bandai Namco’s beginner guide covers the control schemes and resources.

| Option | When it fits | Limit or follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Guard | Use a high or low guard to answer directed attacks from above or below. | A predictable guard can be defeated by Guard Break. |
| High-Speed Evasion | Use a timed response just before certain attacks connect. | It applies only to some attacks and depends on timing. |
| Step-in Sway | Combine a step with guard input to evade. | It is a timed movement response, not a universal block. |
| Revenge Counter | Can interrupt while you are under attack. | Costs Skill Count; consider the attack’s direction and current rules. |
| Super Counter | The official guide describes it as effective against almost all attacks, including attacks from behind. | Requires very precise timing; later updates adjusted counter behavior. |
| Super Perception | Hold the Perception input before impact to answer certain incoming attacks. | Uses resources, with the cost depending on the counter; a last-moment response to a Rush Attack triggers Sonic Sway. |
| Z-Counter | Time the guard input before a Vanishing Assault lands. | Successful exchanges can repeat, with return-counter damage rising as the exchange continues until someone misses the timing. |
The descriptions and inputs for these mechanics come from Bandai Namco’s official combat guide. Its launch-era descriptions are not a promise that every counter behaves identically in every later patch or combat state.
Recover before a combo carries you away
When an opponent sends you toward a wall or the ground, recovery timing can change how the combo ends. The official guide specifies pressing down before impact for Ground Recovery or Wall Recovery, and up before impact for Dragon Dash recovery. Practise recognizing the incoming impact rather than waiting until after you hit; confirm the corresponding inputs in your control scheme.

Learn what each counter is for
Super Perception and Sonic Sway
Super Perception is an anticipatory response: hold the Perception input before impact to counter certain attacks. Against a Rush Attack, a last-moment response triggers Sonic Sway, which dodges and counters while reducing the opponent’s Ki. The official guide also describes using it against some Blasts, specifying a two-Skill-Count cost for that Blast response. That cost is guide-era information, not a universal current value; later updates changed Perception requirements and costs.
Z-Counter
A Z-Counter is a timing exchange: press guard just before an opponent’s Vanishing Assault connects. A successful response can lead to another exchange, and the guide says return-counter damage increases as the sequence continues until one player misses. Focus on the incoming assault and the timing window rather than treating it as a regular guard.

Revenge Counter
The official guide gives R3/R as the input and describes Revenge Counter as an option while you are under attack, at the cost of Skill Count. Check the direction of the attack before spending the resource. The May 2026 update changed when Revenge Counter could be used against a particular stun-type Smash Ki Blast, so older descriptions may not cover every current situation.
Super Counter
The guide gives up plus attack as the input and describes Super Counter as effective against almost all attacks, including attacks from behind. Its timing requirement is extremely precise. January and May 2026 updates document adjustments to counter behavior, so do not assume the launch-era description guarantees the same outcome in every state.

Plan Ki and Skill Count separately
Ki and Skill Count are different resources. Ki supports super attacks and movement; the beginner guide says it can be charged and gained slightly through hand-to-hand hits. Skill Count accrues over time and is spent on actions including transformations, fusion and some counters. Decide what you want available for the next exchange before spending either resource.
Exact costs and recovery behavior are patch-sensitive. Bandai Namco’s January 2026 notes describe a Ki-recovery change for Super Perception, while its 25 May 2026 update adjusted Skill Stock recovery and Perception’s requirements or costs. Do not treat old fixed costs as universal current values. Check the game’s current version notes for your platform before relying on a specific cost or timing rule: the May notice lists Switch and Switch 2 version details, which should not be assumed to apply to PC, Xbox or PS5. See the official January 2026 patch notes and 25 May 2026 update notice.

Practise one decision at a time
- Pick one opposing behavior. For example, focus on a Rush Attack, a Vanishing Assault, or a predictable high or low approach.
- Select one answer. Practise the matching guard, evasion or counter rather than switching responses at random.
- Check what happens next. Notice whether the response avoids the hit, leaves you exposed, or creates a chance to follow up.
- Change one variable. Adjust distance, guard height, counter timing or resource availability, then repeat.
- Build character-specific routes in Training. Test follow-ups with the character you play and the version you use; the general mechanics do not establish a universal optimal combo or ranked strategy.
This practice loop applies the official mechanics without assuming one response works in every matchup. Movement links, timing windows and balance can change, so use Training to verify the routes and responses that matter to your character.
