Adventurer Mode—also called Adventure Mode—is Dwarf Fortress’s open-ended way to explore a generated world through a character or party. For a first run, create one adventurer, learn a small set of controls, talk to locals about nearby troubles, and travel cautiously. There is no required campaign path: exploration and quests are optional, and the world’s inhabitants and locations provide the stories.

What Adventurer Mode is—and what it is not

You play as an individual adventurer in a simulated Dwarf Fortress world, moving between settlements and wilderness, interacting with inhabitants, and deciding what to do. You might investigate a local problem, explore a cave or shrine, visit a town, or simply travel. The mode is a sandbox rather than a linear campaign with one prescribed objective.

Exploration can lead to lairs, abandoned towers, caverns, towns, forest retreats, and fortresses that have been retired from Fortress Mode. Towns, forest retreats, and fortresses are currently identified as sites with shops where official goods can be purchased. Adventurer Mode does not offer building, and crafting is quite limited without mods; do not expect the construction loop of Fortress Mode to apply here. Dwarf Fortress Wiki: Adventurer mode

How to start a first adventure

Choose a world that supports exploration

The Dwarf Fortress Wiki quick-start recommends a small or medium world, a short history, many civilizations and sites, medium beasts, low natural savagery, and frequent minerals. Its rationale is practical: fewer civilizations, low population, or many abandoned sites can leave less to do or make the mode more frustrating. These are community suggestions, not verified optimal settings, and the quick-start warns that it may not fully reflect v53.16.

Attendance is mandatory, survival is optional, and remember: losing is fun.

After world generation, the quick-start’s route is Start Playing → Adventurer. The world you choose affects which races and civilizations are available during character creation. Dwarf Fortress Wiki: Adventure mode quick start

Keep character creation simple

The documented sequence asks you to choose a race and status, then a civilization. Starting equipment and the skills available to assign can vary by civilization. Most skills can improve through use, including many that are not offered during character creation; the Reader skill is an exception according to the mode reference.

For a first game, the wiki quick-start recommends making one adventurer rather than a party, which reduces the number of characters to manage. It gives a demigod dwarf as one example, citing night vision and equipment access, but that is an example rather than a universal best choice. The mode reference also recommends starting with good ability in at least one defensive skill: Shield User, Armor User, or Dodger. Treat these as wiki guidance, not guarantees of safety. Controls to learn first

Adventure Mode controls are case-sensitive. In particular, T means hold Shift and press t. The list below is a starter set, not a complete control tutorial; use the in-game help or the Dwarf Fortress Wiki quick reference when you need another command. You can inspect or change keybindings in the game’s Settings menu.

Find a first objective by talking to people

When you reach people, press k to talk. Ask about troubles to learn what is happening nearby and uncover possible quests. Problems may involve beasts, bandits, or criminals. These leads are invitations to investigate, not instructions to fight everything you encounter.

Keep early goals modest. The quick-start warns that a hydra is a massive challenge even for experienced adventurers, so a formidable creature is not a sensible first target just because you have heard about it. If a situation looks beyond your character’s abilities, leave and explore elsewhere.

Travel and combat without overcommitting

Use fast travel for distance, not as a pause

Press T to enter fast travel, then use d to visit a location from travel view. Fast travel covers larger distances, but it advances game time just as local play does. An ambush can interrupt the journey, so travel is a choice to keep moving through the world—not a way to skip risk or freeze events. Dwarf Fortress Wiki: Adventurer mode

Combat has choices; danger still matters

Adventure Mode includes attacks, wrestling, ranged actions, thrown items, and combat preferences; C opens the preferences menu. The available controls do not make a fight safe by themselves. Pay attention to what you are facing, avoid picking a fight with major threats early, and use retreat as a valid decision.

Version context and reference limits

Adventure Mode’s public release arrived in Dwarf Fortress version 51.02 on January 23, 2025. The release page described an updated interface, overhauled character creation, and new mythical content. That date identifies the public launch, not the game’s current version. Dwarf Fortress Wiki: Release information/51.02

The wiki’s quick-start and control reference warn that some details may need updating; the quick-start specifically says it may be inaccurate for v53.16. Use the pages as practical starting references, and check the game’s own Settings and help if a key or menu does not match your installation. The available version information here does not establish that v53.16 is the latest live release.
