aefilter.dll is most strongly associated with older Ulead VideoStudio installations, not with Windows itself. If VideoStudio reports that the file is missing or cannot load, repair or reinstall the exact edition that originally installed it instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
aefilter.dll is an application DLL used by Ulead VideoStudio, the older video-editing product whose branding later became associated with Corel VideoStudio. Public file metadata reports it as a Win32 component of Ulead VideoStudio, with a reported version, size, and copyright range, but those details are not confirmed by a current vendor manifest.

The file is not known to be part of:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11
- DirectX
- .NET
- Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable
- A graphics-card driver
- The normal Windows DLL set
It should normally be located in the VideoStudio program directory, not copied into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The exact internal purpose of the DLL is not documented in an authoritative current product reference, so treat it as one component of the VideoStudio installation rather than trying to assign it a separate Windows function.

The failing program matters. Confirm the executable name in the error dialog or Task Manager before changing anything. An application that merely copied or referenced the file may not be VideoStudio, although an old Ulead installation is the most likely source.

Causes and symptoms
| What you observe | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| VideoStudio fails immediately after installation | Incomplete or damaged installation | Run Repair, or reinstall the same edition |
| The error began after antivirus action | aefilter.dll was quarantined or removed |
Review quarantine and verify the installation |
| The file exists, but Windows says “specified module could not be found” | A dependency of the DLL may be missing | Repair the application and inspect the full error |
The program is under Program Files (x86) |
A 32-bit VideoStudio build is installed | Keep the matching 32-bit application files together |
| The problem began after disk cleanup or manual deletion | Application files were removed | Reinstall VideoStudio |
| Several unrelated Windows programs fail | Broader Windows component corruption | Run Windows Update, DISM, and SFC |
regsvr32 reports a registration failure |
The DLL is not a self-registering component | Stop using regsvr32; repair the parent application |
Common messages include “aefilter.dll was not found,” “The file aefilter.dll is missing or corrupted,” “Failed to load aefilter.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.” The wording alone does not prove that the file itself is absent.
Fix aefilter.dll by repairing VideoStudio first
This is the highest-probability fix because the DLL belongs with the application that installed it.
1. Identify the affected VideoStudio edition
Before uninstalling anything, record:
- The exact error text.
- The program name and executable shown in the dialog.
- The installation folder.
- Whether the program appears under Program Files or Program Files (x86).
- Whether you still have the original disc, installer, serial information, or legitimate Corel recovery access.
Do not assume that installing a newer VideoStudio release will restore an old Ulead file. Older projects and plug-ins may depend on the original edition and its companion files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Try Windows repair
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- In Windows 11, select Installed apps. In Windows 10, select Apps & features.
- Search for VideoStudio or Ulead VideoStudio.
- Select the three-dot menu, or select the program and choose Advanced options if available.
- Choose Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch VideoStudio from its normal shortcut.
If the program opens without the DLL message, the repair restored the application files. If there is no Repair option, or the error remains, use the original installer.
3. Reinstall the same edition
Use the original installation media or a legitimate Corel recovery or download channel for the matching product.
- Close VideoStudio and any related launcher.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Select the affected VideoStudio entry and choose Uninstall.
- Restart the computer when prompted.
- Run the original installer as an administrator. Right-click the installer and select Run as administrator.
- Install to the normal application location unless the installer requires another path.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program before restoring custom plug-ins or manually copied files.
If the installer offers a cleanup or removal utility, use it only as part of the vendor’s documented reinstall procedure. A complete reinstall may remove old profile data or custom libraries, so preserve project files and any required user-created assets first.
A successful reinstall places aefilter.dll alongside the other files for that VideoStudio edition. It does not require copying the file to a Windows system directory.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →If the original installer is unavailable, contact Corel support or use the legitimate recovery channel associated with the product license. Current downloads may not include an obsolete Ulead installer, and a newer edition is not guaranteed to be compatible with an old project.
Check antivirus quarantine before replacing files
Security software may remove an old application DLL, particularly after a scan, migration, or reinstall.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
aefilter.dllor the VideoStudio installation directory. - Confirm that the detection belongs to the genuine VideoStudio installation and not an unexpected copy in a temporary or download folder.
- Restore the file only if you can verify its origin and the detection is a false positive.
- Reinstall from original media instead if there is any uncertainty.
Do not disable antivirus protection broadly to force the program to start. If the file repeatedly disappears after a clean installation, scan the system and investigate the security detection rather than repeatedly restoring the same file.
Check for a wrong edition or architecture
The available file record identifies aefilter.dll as Win32, so it is reasonable to treat the associated older VideoStudio build as likely 32-bit. A 32-bit program can run on 64-bit Windows, and it may correctly be installed under C:Program Files (x86).

Check the application rather than guessing:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select VideoStudio and note the installed location if Windows displays it.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Start VideoStudio.
- On the Processes or Details tab, locate its executable.
- Compare the executable and DLL locations.
Do not mix files from different VideoStudio releases. A DLL with a similar name from another edition may load incorrectly or fail because its companion files, configuration, or registry data do not match.
Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” can mean that aefilter.dll exists but another library it needs is missing.
First, confirm that the file is present in the VideoStudio installation folder. Then use the application’s installer to repair the complete installation rather than copying individual dependencies.
A Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable should be installed only when diagnostics identify a missing Microsoft runtime such as MSVCR*.dll or MSVCP*.dll. Microsoft’s supported Redistributable documentation does not identify aefilter.dll as a runtime component.

If the error names a particular dependency, record its exact name and obtain that dependency from the application vendor or Microsoft when it is a Microsoft component. Do not install a random package merely because the error contains the word “DLL.”
Do not register aefilter.dll with regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-file repair command, and an ordinary application DLL may not support registration.
Do not run:
regsvr32 aefilter.dll
If you already did and received a message that DllRegisterServer failed, that does not mean the file belongs in System32 or needs another copy. It usually means the command is inappropriate for this DLL. Repair or reinstall VideoStudio instead.
Check drivers only when the symptoms point to them
A missing aefilter.dll is primarily an application-installation problem, not a driver problem. Driver work is appropriate when VideoStudio also shows display corruption, crashes during rendering, or errors naming a graphics component.
To update a graphics driver through Windows:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test VideoStudio.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Restart and test again.
Manually changing drivers will not normally recreate aefilter.dll. Reinstalling the matching VideoStudio edition remains the definitive fix for this file.
Manually hunting through hardware vendors for a compatible driver can mean guessing which of dozens of installed components is stale. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling VideoStudio.

DISM and SFC do not normally recreate a third-party VideoStudio DLL. Use them when Windows itself reports component problems or several unrelated applications are failing.

- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and VideoStudio again. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the application repair or reinstall rather than expecting SFC to supply aefilter.dll.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed can waste time when the real issue is an incomplete application install. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing detected system issues; repairs are performed by the full version, and reinstalling the matching VideoStudio edition remains the definitive fix for this application DLL.
Avoid random DLL download sites
Downloading aefilter.dll from an unrelated DLL site is unsafe and often ineffective. The file may contain malware, have the wrong version or architecture, lack required companion files, or leave the VideoStudio installation and configuration damaged.
Do not copy a downloaded DLL into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- Another application’s folder
- A temporary folder added to the system path
Use the original VideoStudio installer, genuine installation media, or a legitimate Corel recovery channel. Those sources restore the complete application rather than one unverified file.
Frequently asked questions
Is aefilter.dll a Windows system file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with older Ulead VideoStudio software and should normally remain in that application’s directory.
Is aefilter.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
The best available public record labels it Win32, so the associated file is likely part of a 32-bit VideoStudio build. Treat that as reported metadata, not a current vendor-confirmed specification.
Can I download only aefilter.dll?
Do not do so from a random DLL website. Repair or reinstall the exact VideoStudio edition that supplied the file.
Why does the error say the specified module could not be found when the file exists?
A dependency required by aefilter.dll may be missing, or the file may be incompatible with the installed VideoStudio edition. Repairing the complete application is safer than replacing individual files.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I put the file in System32?
No. The DLL is application-owned. Let the VideoStudio installer place it in the correct program folder.
Will System File Checker restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, not third-party VideoStudio files.
What if I no longer have Ulead VideoStudio media?
Look for the original license and contact the legitimate Corel recovery or support channel. If the old installer cannot be obtained, preserve project files before testing a newer VideoStudio release, since compatibility is not guaranteed.
