“The program can’t start because aeinv.dll is missing from your computer.” You may also see “aeinv.dll was not found,” “Error loading aeinv.dll,” or “aeinv.dll could not be loaded.”

aeinv.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component associated with Application Experience and application-compatibility inventory. It is not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, .NET, game dependency, or general-purpose DLL that should be downloaded separately. Microsoft documents the file in Windows security and compatibility updates, including separate x86 and x64 builds. Microsoft’s file information

Which fix applies to you

Use the symptom that matches your case:

  • The error appears during startup, Windows Update, or normal maintenance: repair Windows with updates, DISM, and SFC.
  • Windows Security quarantined the file: inspect Protection history before restoring anything.
  • The message appears when launching an unrelated application: check whether the message is actually caused by Windows rather than that application.
  • rundll32.exe aeinv.dll,UpdateSoftwareInventory uses high CPU: investigate inventory activity instead of replacing the DLL.
  • The error appears in Windows upgrade logs: treat it as one clue among several, not proof that the file is missing.
  • The file exists outside Windows system directories or has no Microsoft signature: investigate it as a possible impostor or malware.
  • DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows: use Windows 11’s repair reinstall or official installation media.

1. Install Windows updates first

A pending or incomplete update can leave Windows components partially serviced.

Try the action that originally produced the aeinv.dll message. If the error remains, continue with component repair rather than downloading a replacement file.

2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC

DISM repairs the Windows component store. System File Checker then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that store.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows after SFC completes.

Microsoft recommends this DISM-then-SFC sequence in its System File Checker guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A successful repair usually ends with SFC reporting that it found and repaired corrupted files, or that it did not find any integrity violations. Test the original task afterward.

If SFC says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the same files remain unrepaired, inspect %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log, then move to the repair-reinstall options below.

Repeating SFC indefinitely is not useful when the component store itself is damaged. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual guesswork by scanning for issues and showing what needs attention, but its free scan does not make paid software mandatory, and Windows repair remains the appropriate path for a damaged system component.

3. Check whether Defender quarantined the genuine file

Security software can remove or quarantine a Windows file after a detection or false positive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security > Windows Security on Windows 11. On Windows 10, open Update & Security > Windows Security.
  3. Click Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Open the relevant detection and inspect its file path and details.

Use Restore and then Allow on device only when you have confirmed that the file is the genuine Windows copy, its location is a normal Windows system directory, and the detection is a false positive. Microsoft explains these actions in Protection History.

Do not restore a file from an unknown folder merely because its name is aeinv.dll. If the file was found in a temporary download directory, an application folder with no clear reason to contain it, or another unusual location, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan.

To scan manually:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click Scan options.
  4. Choose Full scan.
  5. Select Scan now.

The filename alone does not establish authenticity. A valid Microsoft digital signature, normal system location, and matching Windows installation context matter together.

4. Use Windows 11’s repair reinstall

If DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, Windows 11 provides a repair reinstall that preserves apps, files, and settings.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now.
  5. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.

This reinstalls the current Windows version through Windows Update. The option may be unavailable on some installations or managed devices. Microsoft documents the process in Fix issues by reinstalling the current version of Windows.

5. Do not run regsvr32 aeinv.dll

regsvr32 registers self-registering COM and ActiveX DLLs. It is not a general repair command for every DLL.

aeinv.dll is a Windows application-inventory component, not a file Microsoft documents users should register manually. Running this command:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
regsvr32 aeinv.dll

can produce an error without addressing the original problem. It can also confuse a missing dependency with a missing DLL. Microsoft notes that “the specified module could not be found” can refer to a dependency required while loading a file, not necessarily to the named file itself. See Microsoft’s Regsvr32 troubleshooting guidance.

Do not copy aeinv.dll into an application directory or manually overwrite a file in System32. That can create architecture, version, signature, and servicing problems. Repair Windows through its servicing tools instead.

6. Check architecture and Windows version compatibility

Microsoft has documented both 32-bit and 64-bit builds of Aeinv.dll. Historical Windows packages list different versions and sizes for x86 and x64 systems, including version 10.0.11065.1000 at 951,808 bytes for x86 and 1,164,800 bytes for x64. These values apply to the documented package, not to every current Windows installation.

Situation Correct approach
32-bit Windows Use the component supplied by that Windows installation
64-bit Windows Use the component supplied by that Windows installation
Unknown version Repair Windows instead of choosing a downloaded “latest” file
File in an application folder Verify why it is there before trusting it
Different file architecture Do not substitute it

Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 documentation includes Aeinv.dll in relevant packages. Version and file details vary by Windows build, update, architecture, and package. Do not treat an old version table as a complete inventory of current Windows files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. If the error appears during a Windows upgrade

Windows Setup can reference aeinv.dll while enumerating installed software, including Store applications. A line mentioning the file in a setup log does not by itself prove that the DLL is absent.

Check these logs:

%windir%Panthersetupact.log
%windir%Panthersetuperr.log

Search for aeinv.dll, but also note the nearby entries. The actual cause may be a missing application package, inventory-enumeration failure, incompatible software, or broader component-store damage.

Before trying the upgrade again:

  1. Install all available Windows updates.
  2. Restart.
  3. Run DISM and SFC.
  4. Remove recently installed utilities or drivers that appeared just before the failure.
  5. Disconnect unnecessary external devices.
  6. Retry the upgrade using official Windows setup media if Windows Update continues to fail.

Do not delete aeinv.dll or disable compatibility services as a first response. That can hide the symptom while leaving the upgrade problem unresolved.

8. If UpdateSoftwareInventory causes high CPU

You may see this command in Task Manager, scheduled activity, or setup logs:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
rundll32.exe aeinv.dll,UpdateSoftwareInventory

This command is associated with Windows application-compatibility inventory activity. High CPU during a short inventory run is different from a missing-file error.

First:

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update and install pending updates.
  2. Restart.
  3. Check whether the high CPU returns.
  4. Note whether it began after installing software, a driver, or a Windows update.
  5. Review setup logs if the activity occurs during an upgrade.
  6. Run a full Defender scan if the command launches from an unusual path.

If rundll32.exe repeatedly consumes CPU for a prolonged period, run DISM and SFC, then test after a clean boot. Do not delete aeinv.dll, disable Windows compatibility infrastructure, or terminate the process permanently without identifying the trigger.

9. Update or roll back a recently changed driver

A driver is not the usual owner of aeinv.dll, but a recent driver installation can coincide with Windows compatibility checks or upgrade failures.

To update a driver through Windows:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the category for the recently changed hardware.
  4. Right-click the device.
  5. Select Update driver.
  6. Choose Search automatically for drivers.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab.
  4. Select Roll Back Driver if available.
  5. Restart.

Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show which versions need attention, while the full version handles installation; it is optional, and rolling back or updating the known problem device through Device Manager remains the manual route.

Safe sources and prevention

There is no verified Microsoft standalone aeinv.dll redistributable or separate runtime installer. Avoid random DLL download sites because a file can contain malware, target the wrong Windows architecture, belong to a different build, or fail to repair the damaged component that caused the error.

Use these sources instead:

  • Windows Update for servicing files
  • DISM and SFC for Windows repair
  • Windows Security for quarantine review
  • Microsoft installation media for an in-place repair
  • The original software vendor only when a separate application explicitly owns a file

Keep Windows updated, avoid registry cleaners that remove system entries, and create a restore point before major driver or system changes. If the problem began immediately after a known change, System Restore can revert system files and settings without removing personal files.

FAQ

Is aeinv.dll safe?

The genuine Windows copy is a Microsoft system component used by application-compatibility and software-inventory infrastructure. A file with the same name outside normal Windows system directories, without a valid Microsoft signature, or detected by multiple security products may be an impostor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is `aeinv.dll part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?

Microsoft documents the component in Windows packages for several Windows generations, including Windows 7 through Windows 10. Do not assume every Windows 11 installation has the same version or file size. Repair the installed Windows version rather than importing an older copy.

Why does Windows use rundll32.exe?

Windows can call exported functions in certain DLLs through rundll32.exe. UpdateSoftwareInventory is associated with application-inventory activity. Seeing this command does not automatically mean the file is missing or malicious.

Should I download aeinv.dll?

No. There is no verified Microsoft standalone download intended for replacing this file. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Defender review, or a Windows repair reinstall.

Can I fix it with regsvr32?

Generally no. regsvr32 is for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs and is not the appropriate repair for this Windows component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Windows still reports the error after repair?

Review CBS and setup logs, run a full malware scan, test with a clean boot or new local profile, check recent system changes, and use System Restore or an in-place Windows repair. Persistent failures can indicate wider Windows servicing or disk problems rather than a standalone missing file.
