Because afengine.dll is an application file, the safest repair is to restore the complete Airfix installation rather than copy a replacement into a Windows folder.

Do not download afengine.dll from a random DLL download page. Such files can be modified, mismatched, built for the wrong architecture, or missing their own dependencies.

File catalogs report afengine.dll as a Win32 or 32-bit DLL and describe it as AfSetup. Those are third-party metadata claims rather than a surviving official installation manifest, so use the original application package as the authority for the file.

Fix 1: Check antivirus quarantine first
Old games may contain unsigned components that trigger a security product. Do not immediately restore the file. First confirm that the game came from trusted original media or a legitimate store.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with the Airfix installation.
- Check the detected path and file name.
- If the file came from trusted original media, follow the available Restore or Allow on device option.
- If the source is unknown, leave the file quarantined.
- Run a scan of the installer or original disk before reinstalling.
Microsoft advises caution when restoring quarantined files. If the file is restored but disappears again, the security product may still be detecting it, or the installation may be damaged. Reinstalling from trusted media is safer than repeatedly allowing an isolated DLL.
How to tell whether this worked
Start the game from its normal shortcut. If it opens, the quarantine event was probably the immediate cause. If Windows reports another missing file, record the complete message instead of downloading the newly named DLL.
Fix 2: Check the game folder and shortcut
Windows normally searches the folder containing an application for its private DLLs. If the executable was copied by itself, or the game directory was partially moved, afengine.dll may not be found even when the file exists elsewhere.
Check the installation directory
- Right-click the game shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the Target path.
- Select Open File Location if available.
- Confirm that the game executable and
afengine.dllare in the same complete installation directory. - If the shortcut has a Start in field, confirm that it points to the game’s original folder.
- Do not move
afengine.dllintoC:WindowsSystem32orC:WindowsSysWOW64. - Do not launch a copied executable from the desktop or a temporary folder.
If the file is absent, restore the entire game directory from a known-good backup rather than copying only a DLL from an unrelated computer. If the file is present but the error remains, another dependency may be missing.
Check the shortcut target
A shortcut can continue pointing to an old drive or an incomplete copy after a reinstall.
- Right-click the shortcut and select Properties.
- Compare Target with the current installation path.
- Select Open File Location.
- Start the game directly from the executable in that folder.
- If direct launch works, recreate the shortcut or correct its target.
Fix 3: Verify or repair the game installation
If Airfix Dogfighter was installed through a launcher, use that launcher’s repair or verification feature before doing manual file work. For a Steam installation, the usual path is:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish.
- Start the game again.
Verification replaces missing or corrupted files when the launcher has a valid copy. If Airfix Dogfighter is not available in your launcher, do not assume that a generic verification option will repair it.

Reinstall from trusted media
If verification is unavailable or fails:
- Back up saved games if they are stored inside the game directory.
- Uninstall the game from Settings > Apps > Installed apps or from its original uninstaller.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall using the original CD, a complete backup, or a legitimate digital installer.
- Install the game to a normal local folder.
- Avoid copying individual DLLs from another computer.
- Start the game from the new installation folder.
The installer should restore afengine.dll along with the files it needs. If it does not, the installer may be incomplete or the game may not be compatible with the current Windows environment.
How to tell whether this worked
The repair is successful when the game reaches its main menu without the afengine.dll message. If a new error names DirectX, Visual C++, or another DLL, treat that as a separate prerequisite problem.
Fix 4: Install only the prerequisite named by the error
An error mentioning afengine.dll does not prove that Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is missing. Install a runtime only when the full message names it or when the original game installer includes it.

Visual C++ errors
Messages mentioning names such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll indicate a Visual C++ runtime issue rather than a missing afengine.dll.
Microsoft provides official Visual C++ packages here:
- Visual C++ Redistributable downloads
- Microsoft Visual C++ x86 package
- Microsoft Visual C++ x64 package
For a 32-bit game, use the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.
- Read the full error and identify the runtime name.
- Download the matching package from Microsoft.
- Run the installer.
- Accept the license terms.
- Select Install or Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Start the game again.
Do not remove existing Visual C++ versions simply because a newer version is installed. Older applications can require different runtime generations.

- Open Start.
- Search for Turn Windows features on or off.
- Open the result.
- Expand Legacy Components if present.
- Enable DirectPlay only if the game or its installer specifically requires it.
- Select OK.
- Allow Windows to install the component.
- Restart the computer and test the game.
Do not enable unrelated Windows features merely because afengine.dll is missing. DirectPlay can help a legacy game run, but it does not replace the application DLL.
Fix 5: Run the game with compatibility settings
If reinstalling restores the file but the game crashes or closes immediately, the remaining problem may be legacy-game compatibility rather than afengine.dll.
- Right-click the game executable.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version.
- Select Run this program as an administrator if the game requires elevated access to its installation folder.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Start the game.
Use administrator mode only for the game that needs it. Do not grant permanent administrator access to an installer or DLL from an untrusted source.
If the game displays graphics problems, try the compatibility options one at a time. A successful compatibility setting should allow the game to start consistently without changing the location of afengine.dll.
Fix 6: Update Windows and investigate driver problems
Windows Update will not normally provide afengine.dll, but keeping Windows current can resolve general compatibility and component problems.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the game again.
If the failure began after a graphics driver change, update or roll back the display driver:

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs a driver.
If the problem started immediately after a driver update:
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Restart and test the game.

Fix 7: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when multiple unrelated applications have missing or damaged system files, or when Windows itself behaves abnormally. They are unlikely to restore an application-owned afengine.dll.

Run DISM first
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the command to complete.
Run System File Checker second
In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter:
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft recommends completing DISM before SFC.

- If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, Windows protected files were not the problem.
- If SFC repaired corrupted files, restart Windows and test the game.
- If SFC could not repair some files, repeat the process after restarting and confirm that Windows Update is working.
- If only Airfix Dogfighter still fails, return to repairing or reinstalling the game.
Running SFC repeatedly will not manufacture an application file that was never part of Windows.

System Restore may help if the game worked before a driver, application, or system change. It is not guaranteed to recover an application DLL.
- Press Win+R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Afterward, test the game and check whether the file exists in its installation folder. If the restore does not resolve the problem, reinstall the game rather than copying a DLL into a system directory.
Why regsvr32 is usually the wrong fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It does not download, repair, or recreate a missing file.

Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 afengine.dll
This can produce another error and does not address a damaged game installation. Private application DLLs generally load from the game directory and do not need COM registration. Registration is relevant only when the application’s documentation specifically requires it.
The 32-bit and 64-bit versions of regsvr32 also differ on 64-bit Windows, but that distinction matters only for a DLL that genuinely requires registration. It does not make regsvr32 an appropriate repair for afengine.dll.
Do not copy afengine.dll into System32
Avoid these common approaches:
- Downloading the DLL from a random file catalog
- Copying it into
C:WindowsSystem32 - Copying it into
C:WindowsSysWOW64 - Renaming another DLL to
afengine.dll - Installing an x64 runtime for a 32-bit game
- Running registry cleaners
- Registering the file without documentation
- Replacing only the DLL while leaving the rest of the installation damaged
A replacement may have the wrong version, architecture, export functions, or dependencies. It may also be unsafe. The correct source is the complete Airfix installer, original game media, a trusted backup, or a legitimate launcher that can verify the installation.

Collect this information before attempting another repair:

- The game’s installation path.
- Whether
afengine.dllexists beside the game executable. - Whether antivirus quarantine lists the file.
- Whether verification or reinstallation completed successfully.
- Whether other programs also report missing DLLs.
- Whether the game worked before a recent update, driver installation, or disk move.
If afengine.dll exists but the application still reports that it cannot load it, the real problem may be a dependent module. A reputable dependency-analysis tool can identify missing modules, but do not download replacement files based only on their names. Use the original installer or the named dependency’s official source.
