devfileservice.dll is a Samsung Kies file used by the program’s Device Services component. If Windows reports that devfileservice.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, repair or reinstall the correct Samsung Kies package rather than downloading a loose DLL.
The file is not a normal Windows system component. It is associated with Samsung’s legacy phone-management software, so the safest fix is to restore the application that owns it.

The published file is 32-bit. That means a 32-bit Kies process needs the 32-bit DLL and compatible 32-bit dependencies, even when Windows itself is 64-bit. No reliable public source establishes a current 64-bit version of this file.
Error messages you may see
Windows or a Kies-related process may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because devfileservice.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because devfileservice.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting devfileservice.dll.”
- “Error loading devfileservice.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “devfileservice.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library devfileservice.dll.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file itself is absent. The DLL may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, damaged, blocked, or the wrong architecture.

Fix 1: Confirm that Samsung Kies is the program calling the DLL
Before changing Windows components, identify the application behind the message.
- Read the error window carefully for an executable name, such as a Kies launcher or Samsung process.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for entries containing Samsung, Kies, or Device Services.
- Right-click a relevant entry and select Open file location, if available.
- Check whether the folder points to Samsung Kies.
You can also inspect the installation folders manually:
C:Program FilesSamsungKies
C:Program Files (x86)SamsungKies
If Kies is installed but the DeviceModules folder or DevFileService.dll is missing, the installation is incomplete or damaged. If Kies is no longer installed and the error appears only during startup, Windows may be trying to launch a leftover Kies entry.
To inspect the calling program through Event Viewer:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
text
eventvwr.msc
- Press Enter.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the DLL message.
- Open the event and check Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
This helps distinguish a real Kies failure from an orphaned startup command.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a file after an installation, update, or later scan. Treat this as a possibility, not proof that the file is safe.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with Samsung Kies or
DevFileService.dll. - Check the detected file path and the action taken.
Only consider restoring the file if all of the following are true:

- It came from a legitimate Samsung Kies installer.
- The path is inside the expected Kies directory.
- The installer itself came from Samsung’s official support or download channel.
- A current security scan does not show broader malware activity.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can make it active again. Do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion simply to suppress the error. If Windows Security repeatedly quarantines the file, remove the questionable installation and obtain Kies again from Samsung’s official support page.
Fix 3: Repair or reinstall the correct Samsung Kies package
This is the most likely and most reliable fix.
Samsung separates its older Kies package from Kies 3. The correct choice depends on the phone generation. Samsung’s official Kies support page explains that Kies is intended for older phones, while Kies 3 supports devices from the Galaxy Note III era and Android 4.3 or later. Kies 2.6 is also listed in Samsung’s software download resources.
Do not mix files from Kies and Kies 3. Install the package intended for the phone.
Remove the damaged installation
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
text
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select Samsung Kies or Samsung Kies 3.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
If the uninstaller is missing or fails:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Kies.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the Samsung entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
After restarting, check whether a Samsung Kies folder remains. Do not delete unrelated Samsung folders. If the old Kies folder clearly belongs to the removed installation and contains only leftover program files, remove it after confirming that Kies is no longer installed.
Install the correct package
- Open Samsung’s official support page for Kies.
- Choose the Kies generation that matches the phone.
- Download the installer supplied by Samsung.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Complete the installation without manually moving its files.
- Restart Windows.
- Start Kies before connecting the phone.
- Connect the phone with a suitable USB cable.
Then verify the file in the installation directory. It should remain beside the Kies components that load it, normally under a path similar to:
C:Program Files (x86)SamsungKiesExternalDeviceModules
If Kies starts without the DLL message, the repair worked. If the installer reports a missing runtime or fails before completion, continue with the dependency checks below.
Fix 4: Repair a named Visual C++ dependency
Do not install Visual C++ automatically for every DLL error. Use this step when the error also names a Microsoft runtime such as:
MSVCP*.dll
VCRUNTIME*.dll
api-ms-win-crt*.dll
It is also relevant if the Kies installer specifically reports a missing runtime.
Because DevFileService.dll is known as a 32-bit file, the x86 Visual C++ package is the relevant first choice for a 32-bit Kies process. Installing only the x64 package does not satisfy a 32-bit application.

- Otherwise choose Install.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Kies again.
Microsoft states that Visual C++ 2015–2022 applications use a compatible runtime family, while older applications may require older redistributables. If Kies identifies a different runtime generation, use the Microsoft package appropriate to that message rather than installing random runtime files.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and System File Checker repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party Samsung Kies file, so use them when Windows shows other corruption symptoms as well.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
text
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Run:
text
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test Samsung Kies again.
DISM may use Windows Update as a repair source, so an internet connection can be necessary. If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, restart before testing. If it reports that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the guesswork of repeatedly running SFC and DISM by scanning for problems and showing what needs attention; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling Samsung Kies remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Kies.
Fix 6: Install Windows updates and restart
Legacy applications can fail after a partial Windows update, pending restart, or damaged servicing operation.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Test Kies.
This step is more useful when several applications are failing, Windows features behave abnormally, or system repair tools report component-store problems. It is not a replacement for reinstalling a missing Kies file.
Fix 7: Update or reinstall relevant device drivers
DevFileService.dll belongs to Samsung software, not a Windows hardware driver. Generic driver updates are therefore not the first fix. However, Kies may also depend on Samsung USB communication components when detecting a phone.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.

- Expand Other devices, if present.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or an unknown Samsung device.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the phone and allow Windows to reinstall the device.
Do not remove unrelated USB devices. If Samsung provides a USB driver package for the relevant phone and Kies version, obtain it from Samsung’s official support resources.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers instead of hunting through many device entries manually; the free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation requires the full version. A driver utility will not replace a damaged DevFileService.dll, so repair Kies itself if the DLL remains missing.
Fix 8: Check Windows Features only for a separately reported dependency
There is no evidence that enabling a random Windows feature restores DevFileService.dll. Do not enable every legacy component as a general DLL repair.

Do not assume that .NET or a legacy Windows feature is required merely because the application is old. The correct Samsung installer should identify an applicable prerequisite.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 9: Use System Restore after a recent software change
System Restore is a fallback when the error began immediately after a driver installation, cleanup operation, update, or other software change and a restore point exists from before the problem.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
text
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the DLL error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore affects installed programs, drivers, settings, and system files. It is not a first-line replacement for repairing Kies, and it does not guarantee that a particular Samsung file will return.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL from a random website
A standalone DLL may have the wrong version, wrong architecture, incomplete dependencies, or malicious modifications. Even a genuine copy may not match the Kies build that is trying to load it.
Use the original Samsung installer or a known-good backup from the same installation. Do not copy the file into System32 or SysWOW64 to hide the error. That can create version conflicts and leave the damaged Kies installation unresolved.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general fix
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable public evidence that DevFileService.dll is a COM or ActiveX component requiring registration.
Running this command is not a proper repair:
regsvr32 devfileservice.dll
If it reports that DllRegisterServer was not found, that means the file is not meant to be repaired through DLL registration. A normal application DLL is loaded by its owning executable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not use registry cleaners or automated DLL fixers
Registry cleaners do not reconstruct a correct Samsung installation. They can remove unrelated settings and make diagnosis harder. Repair the owning application instead.
If Kies is no longer needed
If the phone is supported by a newer Samsung management method or you no longer use Kies, remove the obsolete software instead of restoring a DLL only to satisfy an orphaned startup entry.
- Uninstall Samsung Kies from Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable leftover Samsung Kies entries.
- Press Windows + R and enter:
text
taskschd.msc
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for clearly identified Samsung Kies tasks.
- Disable or remove only tasks that belong to the uninstalled Kies package.
- Restart and confirm that the startup error is gone.
If the message still appears, check the executable path in the error and Event Viewer. An orphaned shortcut, scheduled task, service, or startup registry entry may still point to the deleted Kies folder.

If the file exists but Kies still fails
Check these points in order:
- Confirm that the file is inside the Kies folder, not
System32. - Confirm that the caller is Samsung Kies rather than an unrelated program.
- Repair or reinstall the correct Kies generation.
- Check whether the message names a missing dependency.
- Look for 32-bit versus 64-bit mismatches.
- Review Windows Security Protection History.
- Check Event Viewer for the faulting application.
- Scan Windows for malware if the file path is unusual or the signature is invalid.
- Use DISM and SFC only if Windows itself shows corruption.
- Remove Kies completely if it is no longer required.
A “not designed to run on Windows” message usually points to a corrupted file, incomplete extraction, wrong architecture, or missing dependency. It does not make regsvr32 the correct solution.

Is devfileservice.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Samsung Kies Device Services and is not ordinarily a protected Windows system file.
Is devfileservice.dll a driver?
No. The file is a Samsung application DLL. Kies may use Samsung USB drivers separately, but updating a driver alone does not normally restore this file.
Should I install the 32-bit or 64-bit version?
The known published file is 32-bit. Use the 32-bit Kies package and x86 dependencies when a runtime is required. Do not replace it with a 64-bit DLL.
Which Kies version should I install?
Choose the Kies generation that matches the phone. Samsung distinguishes older Kies support from Kies 3 support for newer Galaxy Note III-era devices and Android 4.3 or later. Avoid mixing Kies and Kies 3 files.

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this DLL belongs to Samsung Kies. Reinstall Kies for the missing application file.
Should I register the DLL?
No, not as a general fix. There is no established evidence that this file requires COM registration.
Why does the error appear after uninstalling Kies?
A startup entry or scheduled task may remain after the program files were removed. If you no longer need Kies, remove the leftover entry instead of downloading the DLL.
What is the safest permanent fix?
Repair or reinstall the correct Samsung Kies package from Samsung’s official support resources. If Kies is obsolete for your phone, uninstall it and remove its remaining startup entries.
